Dioscorea Alata, Known as Purple Yams, Winged Yam, Ube / Ubi. The vines are now flowering, this is the first year the tubers are growing, so we hope they set seeds. Perfect for Permaculture Survival Garden. These are growing in Woodchips, Back to Eden Style. We will have some this year to harvest, so we can cook and enjoy them as a vegetable and for baking cakes, ice cream and other desserts. We are going to make Ice Cream and add coconut milk and sugar, should be great.

I’ve been enjoying ur videos and learning about your composting method. I️ was born in the Philippines and is currently living in Northern California. Ur ube, papaya and banana vids caught my attention. These all grow well in tropical places but because of ur composting method and wood chips helped them grow well in cold places. I️ will try ur method as well. I️ am new in gardening and wonder if you are selling seedlings and cuttings of the mentioned vegetables. Oh by the way you can also cook green papaya fruit with other vegetables like with moringa or pepper leaves. Sauté with ginger and onion with chicken meat and use green papaya fruit and morninga leaves and or pepper leaves as ur vegetables. Add these vegetables when chicken meat is almost cooked, add the leaves last just before serving. You will have the best meal ever!!! The ube is sooo good boil and mashed it then add coconut milk and sweetener like condensed milk or sugar and cook it slow until it gets thick. Its sooo yummy. Hope I️ get response from u guys regarding the seeds, tubers and or banana stalks for sale? Thanks and Yahua bless you both.

Good day Kabayan! In Northern California, ube, papaya and banana can be planted and will grow from April to early October but the same plants will succumb to frost or low temperatures from as early as late October to March. I'm originally from the Philippines, too, and have been living here in Southern California since 1992. Happy New Year kabayan. God bless

@@54urmila i don't think so. Also the Mexican Variety must be similar to the Philippines. We used to trade with each other hundreds of years ago. They had our mangoes and the Purple Yam called Ube .

the flower will produce seeds and you can plant it . make it grow . i did planted the tiny seed almost a most a year since it start , i planted it in the pot, now it is still growing , that seed I planted , now started having a bulbil on the stem . I thought before the seed would not grow but it grew. you can keep the seed and grow it in nursery on small pot by misting water every day until the seed sprouted. it will work to grow the small seed from purple yum

The Flowers smell amazing! The Bees love them. Did you get any winged seeds from then? If you drop them they spin round, They will flower every year when they are mature. It can take a few years to get your first flowers. But once they start they never seem to stop until the seeds start to form.

Wow... I've never seen flowers of the true yam, Discorea alata, until now. Where are you guys located at? I have been living here in Southern California for 30 years and if you're just across the pond I would like to pay a visit, pending your invitation. I've been for 9 years, from1976-1985, a researcher on root crops breeding (sweet potato, cassava and true yams) at a state university back home and not seen flowering true yam varieties. That's why our breeding method for the true yam is just evaluation and selection of high yielding varieties with good quality and others from collections within the country and foreign introductions. There's no hybridization or inter-varietal crossing due to no observed flowering. If those flowers were to produce seeds, you can generate individual plants that are different in many respects from one another. But in order to have that, try to pollinate the female flowers in the morning in order to produce seeds, more than the natural crossing. I just checked in the published literatures that male and female are not borne in the same flowers in the same plant just like squash, just to mention one.

I planted ube in July and it grew really well but it has not grown tubers big enough to be harvested. Because of the cold weather, the leaves have now died. What do I do to overwinter? I planted it in grow bag. Should I just leave it in the grow bag or should I uproot it? Will appreciate an answer. Thanks.

Will ube grow in MN USA?
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy 5 лет назад
Gary responding. The simple answer is I don't know. When I started I could not find information about anyone growing them in Southern California. Still can't. I went for it based on what I know I can grow. There are some tropical plants that can be grown in shorter seasons if you bring the dormant tubers or corms in during the cold months. If believe you can grow Cannas. I would try by either growing in a large pot and storing it in a frost free place during dormancy or digging up the tuber and store it in dry soil.
@mrmadness2699
@mrmadness2699 5 лет назад
I'm pretty sure you dont have the length of growing season they need. You'd get more calories per acre with ordinary potatoes
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy 5 лет назад
Gary responding. Actually we have a long enough growing season. It is normal to average up to 15lbs of harvest from 1lb of tuber with very little work. The main issue was the soil Ph. They prefer an acidic soil, our native clay is 8.0. The woodchips neutralized the soil to 7.0. Too many pests were destroying my regular potatoes so I looked for alternatives. Purple yams have zero pests here and sweet potatoes also do well. I still have a few volunteer potatoes growing but I don't get anywhere near the harvest I got in Australia.
