Purra’s reaction to butt scratches 

Usually all cats will react this way because they hold a lot of nerves in that area and a little scratch here and there can be nice for them because they can’t really scratch there themselves. But to much for too long can be over stimulating and sometimes painful

Tried this with my own cat. He turned around and slapped me. He is usually very friendly, but the message was clear, "keep off my butt"!

I've also read that being pet in general stimulates a "co grooming" response. So they basically feel strongly like they need to lick when they are being petting. Since there isn't another cat there, they lick themselves, or you, whatever is easily accessible.

That spot is hard to get to when they groom themselves. So it's a sweet spot for itchiness. You scratch that spot they go crazy.

My Lala does exactly the same thing, plus she gets crosseyed, pulls really really strange faces and licks her left front paw... Purra is such a cute name... What a lovely little lady!!

Explaination: the reason why the cat is licking the air is because it’s her way of saying that you’re really scratching an itchy part of their body. It’s like their way of expressing relief 😂 OOOOR, she just really loves having that part scratched and that her licking the air/self is because she doesn’t understand what’s happening and her head is filling in the gap and thus, causes her to lick nothing.

My cat(a persian i think) is kinda similar. Whenever I scratch that particular part of her backside she always finds something to scratch the side of her cheek on, and she does so with great fervor

I see this too many times with cats. They start short-circuiting for some reason.

I've seen videos like this but I've never actually seen a cat react strangely to having their lower back scratched. The biggest reaction I've ever seen is that they raise their tail to show they like it, but they don't then act strangely or lose control of themselves or anything. My Elcy-Rin likes being scratched there, especially while she's eating, but she doesn't go nuts, she just likes it normally, she'll also raise her tail while she's eating if I pet her or scratch her anywhere else.

Not an expert, but that type of reaction to that area is not uncommon. My cats would react similarly. A friend had a cat that would start scratching his face every time you petted the hind quarters.

Mine does the same, though it will bite its front legs too. My thought is it’s shooting sensation through their nerves and they’re trying to bite or lick it to stop it.
