TOS - 1x16 "Shore Leave"
(Enterprise is orbiting a very green planet, and a young female Yeoman is getting a signature from the Captain.)
KIRK: Anything from the landing party?
SPOCK: They should be sending up a report momentarily, Captain. (Kirk stretches and groans) Something wrong?
KIRK: A kink in my back. (behind his back the Yeoman starts to massage it) That's it. A little higher, please. Push. Push hard. Dig it in there, Mister S... (Spock steps forward and Kirk realises who is massaging his lower back)
KIRK: Thank you, Yeoman. That's sufficient.

What gets me is that Spock knows that Kirk thinks he is massaging his back so he steps out to the side to clarify things and Kirk says to stop immediately he sees his error, I do so love those two.

I think it's because he thought it'd be inappropriate to have a female crewmember do it, especially one so far below Kirk's rank. Spock, being male and almost at Kirk's rank, is a bit more appropriate.

@@EndOfSmallSanctuary97 There might be more about it. Such familiarity could imply much more. And Kirk wants to avoid rumors. Or even the show writers might imply more. A young female yeoman instanly getting handsy with the Captain on the bridge, w/o hesitation and w/o asking permission, would be unthinkable of, unless she's used to it. She's acting as if they actually are intimate. Notice Kirk didn't ask for anything and when he said "A kink in my back" he was actually replying to Spock asking "Something wrong". She took initiative as if it was perfectly normal for her. So Kirk may be worried about the truth to be revealed, or at least, of "true" rumors spreading around.

On the surface the scene was supposed to be about Kirk being embarrassed that a yeoman was giving him a back massage, which would be inappropriate from a command standpoint, but below the surface the writer of the episode, Theodore Sturgeon, wanted to insert a homoerotic connotation, because he was gay.

ffs, the "kirk is gay" shit EVERY TIME this clip is posted. He's the Captain, he has to be proper and professional. Only to later ask her to cook him soup. Bare in mind, in SNW she messed wth his emotions, played him, and is ow leaving him. She is a psychopath since, 12 years later, when Spock is going through the "Biology of being Vulcan!" she tries to take advantage TWICE.

I am not surprised that Kirk had back problems due to the time he spent in different atmospheres. I myself suffer back problems which I suspect are caused by the amount of time I spent as a kidnapped hostage in space held for 6 years of which I have very little recollection of due to the fact that my experience was "scrubbed" from my brain by the Canadian government after I was released in Nova Scotia in 1988.

And yes, I LOVE this scene, I think it's very funny. It was obviously accidental, but was never taken out, just like the scene where mind-controlling aliens make Kirk get down an all fours and make horse noises, while a midget rode him (it was since revealed to be actors filmed while fooling around in-between takes).

hardly, the only confirmed gay relationship that was ever hinted at and being rejected was Garak and Bashir on DS9, with the two even doing a video on youtube of them reading a script set 10 years after the show, as a gay couple. where as everyone on TOS has said Kirk wasnt gay or bi.

@MegaBlub2010, in Russian version phrase "Mr. Spock" was deleted too =\ Also, in "Wrath of Khan", then Spock said "I have been and ever shall be YOURS" (this was in the fist half of the movie), it was translated "your friend" instead of "yours" =\ It seems to me, that Russian translators are afraid of ambiguity. *excuse my English, I'm Russian... inWention*

In the Wrath of Khan, the context had the word friend on it. "You are my captain, and my friend. I have been, and always shall be yours." - Spock And after that, every time he repeats that he says "I will always be your friend" So, I believe that the Russian Dub wasn't censoring anything in that scene you mentioned. BUT, if I'm not mistaken, the Vulcan language doesn't have a literal word for "friend", the closer it has is the word T'hylla that means brother, friend and LOVER. So, everytime Spock calls Jim a friend, it can have a second meaning (Lenny face), and to get the ship past the censors. xD "I have been, and always shall be yours." -Spock

They wrote Rand out because they wanted Kirk to have different romances and not settle into one with her. They also wanted to eliminate a female and it couldn't be Nurse Chapel because she was Roddenberry's fiance at the time and Uhura was his former lover so she knew her days were numbered.

Yep. When I learned of Grace Lee Whitney’s departure from the show, it became pretty obvious that lot of the random women in season 1 were replacements for Janice Rand and this scene makes more sense if you replace Yeoman Barrows with Yeoman Rand. Gene Roddenberry wanted to base Captain Kirk and Janice Rand on Marshal Dillon and Miss Kitty from Gunsmoke.

Ah and once Shatner said in a interview, that of all romantic conquests (He had a lot of alien girls, everybody knows...) Spock was his greatest. Or the one he was most proud about. Ok, I knew it was just a joke but in every little joke is a bit of truth. And Roddenberry never disclaimed it anyway. :-))

In my untamed youth I learned there is an erogenous zone in the neck or shoulder area. If you nibble the area it is very pleasant. I happened to tell this to an ignorant person and he squeezed the same area with his hand which did not feel good. Spock knows the Yeoman, massaging him isn't appropriate. He also knows Kirk wouldn't approve. So with a simple step forward. Kirk sees, and puts a stop to it without embarrassing himself or the Yeoman. Infront of the bridge crew. There's a running gag in the ToS novel continuity. That male captains that get female Yeoman are just doing so, to get laid. Because remember there's no regulations against it. But it's more like a social faux pa.

Well, honestly, there's nothing sexual about a back rub per se and in my experience, the best massagers are men. Also, despite the hilariously gay dialogue in this scene, it might be Kirk was being very formal; they didn't want the viewers to assume Starfleet Captains just accept back rubs from female staff.

@@Princess2Warrior It was the exact opposite. When he thought it was Spock, it was just a back rub to work out a muscle knot. When he realized it was his attractive yeoman, it became inappropriate, which is why he brusquely and somewhat abashedly ended it. Any sexual overtones were actually hetero; if the yeoman had been a strapping young man, it would again have been no big deal.

(also, I realise your comment was posted a month ago, and your views may have changed since) True, Shatner's 60-s style overly expressive acting ("shatneresque", it was even called) MAY, by some serious extension, be misenterpreted as acting "in a gay way", Nimoy's has never suggested the slightest degree of sensuality. It was, in fact, noted for its LACK of any sort of emotion, let alone homosexual innuendo.

As Kirk's Friend it's acceptable. As the Captain of a Starship on the bridge by a Junior Officer not so much. Certain standards and discipline in the ranks must be observed after all.

If Grace Lee Whitney hadn't been fired, Yeoman Rand would have done that scene. Yeoman Barrows is one of the best non-Rand yeoman parts in the series. Whether they would have had Rand "date" McCoy on the planet and nearly fallen to pieces after being attacked is questionable as much was written on the fly just before filming and some liked to ship Rand and Kirk. But thinking about it now, I can imagine hearing her voice saying Barrows' dialog. She also would have been great as "The Captain's Woman" in "Mirror, Mirror" and the psychologist who messes with his mind in "Dagger of the Mind." But by the same token, she could have been the yeoman turned into a "cube" and crushed in "By Any Other Name" as her final performance on the series.

Yeah, it’s stated in the trivia for Shore Leave that the scenes between Barrows and McCoy were originally meant for Kirk and Rand. When Grace Lee Whitney was abruptly fired they scrambled to replace her, so they gave those scenes to Barrows and McCoy and introduced Kirk’s one-off love interest Ruth for the same reason.

Also in the trivia for By Any Other Name it says the original script was much darker. Instead of crushing people to death the aliens chose crew members from the Enterprise to mate with each other in order to breed slaves for them. Kirk was chosen to mate with Yeoman Thompson, most likely the episode’s stand-in for Yeoman Rand. For obvious reasons NBC objected to this storyline so Gene Coon ordered a heavy rewrite.

@@philosopherscribe39 It's all around a better episode for having Kirk meet Ruth. The "Ruth" love theme was used to good effect for Spock and Leila in "This Side of Paradise." Curiously, Ruth is not one of the 20 women Kirk kisses in the 3 seasons. I thought she must be the woman who um, taught Kirk to be romantic, poetic, etc. But in a draft of the script she had lines saying they went their separate ways at Kirk's graduation. So this would be after the year with Janice Lester, but before returning to the Academy as a Lieutenant and meeting the blonde he almost married (presumably Dr. Carol Marcus) that his student, and friend, Gary Mitchell sent his way to distract him.

If you watch closely the yeoman begins the massage just before Kirk says where it is as if she is aware of the back issue and begins the massage right readily unbidden. Kirks look at Spock seems to indicate he feels this is just Further proof that he, Kirk is hound dog. That another yeoman has been previously intimate with the Captain. Spock s expression seems to say..You've been at it again.
