Golden thanks Haha, young guys playing with old wrecks and never starting one. Never cut a lawn but have some spare parts to sell. Well the dogs on the starter often fail to come out, the spring works, everything is in place but the dogs won't come out, unless pulled very hard! Now these videos are not helpful. They're not getting these machines lawn ready, just pulling them apart and building them back up. It's no help unless the machine works!

A bit negative mate, he demonstrated the pull starter works perfectly. It didn't start because he didn't want it to, as he hadn't turned on the fuel!

Excellent video. My spring clip keeps jumping out of its position. I solved the problem by keeping constant pressure on the clip as I tightened it.

Thanks for shooting this video as it was most helpful when I came to repairing my pull start cord and re-locating the rewind spring which came disconnected when the cord ran back violently after it broke. My model is the Power Torque 550 professional 160cc which is very similar. I was suprised how the starter dog is inside the crankcase and engages on a pin right on the crankshaft by the big end. Edit:: just finished cutting the first lawn. Engine runs even better than before as when I had the starter assembly out (actually one side of the crankcase) I noticed the seal mentioned in the video was shot. So made a new one out of "O ring" kit and super glue and this has improved the running of the motor - as you would expect especially with a 2 stroke.

Thanks heaps for this download. Pull cord snapped on mine and followed all the instructions as you described. Was quoted $150 for a service and replacement cord on my 20+ year old victa mower. Paid $10 bucks for the cord at our local Bunnings store and the rest was done as per your instructions. Took me bout 2 hours lols, but got there in the end. Hardest bit for me was trying to bend and cut the spring inside (as it was missing the lug) so it could catch and recoil. Legend.

Thanks so much for putting this video together. I replaced a cord & pulled 5-6 times all recoiled & mower started ran for a few seconds & stalled , 2 more pulls & recoil spring failed. I tried for half an hour to grab & hold the flat cross bit without success. now Ill get the vice grips out & complete the job.

You can do it without a vice if you have a second person that can hold the starter housing or locking pliers. i am not aware of any other way that you can disassemble the starter. if i come across any other ways i'll be sure to upload a video.

Got a slightly later model engine (VEX60) but the procedure was the same, thanks. Took me about 10 attempts to get the wire circlip to stay on my model as it kept falling out of position. Also wanted to know whether there was 2 o-ring seals on the shaft or 1, and after watching this video in slow-mo I noticed there was only 1 o-ring. no idea what the other slot was for.

@KateLicker

anyone else get the impression, that, between this starter mechanism, and the G-type plastic carbs...toss in the ignition spark module you cannot get to without removal of blade disc (sometimes easy, sometimes not, on old mowers) and then engine assy from chassis shell..Victa pretty much intended for these mowers to fuck up in a lot of ways? a lot of people threw up their hands and went got a new one..

Can't seem to find a solution to my issue, spring has plenty of tension and returns fine but when pulling it rarely engages the motor. Does the throwout action seize up?
@konrad5286

The Friction Spring on my mower is NOT fitting snugly around the circular lip on the starter assembly. The spring is oblong, not completely circular and when i try to tighten the starter it jumps up off the circular lip. I must have bent it, correct? I was experimenting before and tried to fit it without removing the starter. Also I have a Victa MasterCut 460 which uses the ST12624U friction spring whereas this spring is ST12624A and my mower store can only get that one. Do you know if the A model spring is suitable?

Hey mate, I've found all of your videos to be very informative and I'm grateful that you guys have this information available to the public. I've followed your tutorial however my problem is that the chord works perfectly when it is not in the mower, but when I put it back into position I can pull out 2-3 inches of the chord and then it stops and is stuck? Any help would be appreciated.
@Pushmowerrepair
@Pushmowerrepair 9 лет назад
Aleks Gavri The First thing I would try is to loosen the nut slightly and see if that allows the starter to spin, If not i would check that the Clip is correctly installed and also that the piston and crankshaft spin freely without the starter installed.

Once the start pull is assembled and after a few pulls, the 'circlip' (friction spring) unclips ..the notch in the clip is still in place but rest of the wire finds it way under the starter shaft mechanism (the part which makes contact with crank pin). This part of the starter shaft has some play to allow the clip to move out of its location. Any solutions you can offer ?
@Pushmowerrepair
@Pushmowerrepair 8 лет назад
+Bjorn Oudolf There should not be any play in the clip area once the nut and shaft have been tighted, Something could be stopping the shaft moving in as far as it should

I made this repair a while ago on a mower but the mower hasn't been used since. I tried to fire the mower up but the starter cord got wrenched out of my hand violently as I pulled the starter cord. It also makes a clanging sound which I can't quite pinpoint. The blade carrier does move slightly when you try to rock it, could it be an engine bearing problem or do you think something else?
@Pushmowerrepair
@Pushmowerrepair 8 лет назад
+Roonza Car That issue is most often caused by a not properly tightened blade carrier, This throws out the timing of the engine and causes it to miss fire and rip the starter cord out of your hand.
@roonzacar7276
@roonzacar7276 8 лет назад
Thanks I thought I had tightened it enough.
@itolond
@itolond 9 лет назад
I followed this to a T and I am still having issues with the pull start, any pointer would be appreciated. All looks ok with the housing off, pul cord pulls and returns, etc. but once i get it in to the mower and pull once (starts ok) the cord remain out and does not return. I did notice with the housing off of it tightened to unit it got stick and does not rotate easily, what am I missing here.? - (ps new pull start plastic disk)
@Pushmowerrepair
@Pushmowerrepair 9 лет назад
itolond The nut holding the plastic disk do is easily overtighten, You may want to loosen it a turn or two and see if this loosens up the mechanism and allows it to retract, You could also try winding some more tension into the starter.
@roonzacar7276
@roonzacar7276 10 лет назад
The pull cord was stuck on my mower so i took it apart as per your video. The cord now moves and effectively turns the engine over but the cord retracts only slightly not matter how much tension i give it by winding the mechanism. The spring looks ok but is it possible that it's stretched a bit and lost its springiness? Or is there some other explanation?
@Pushmowerrepair
@Pushmowerrepair 10 лет назад
Hi The first thing i would check is to slightly loosen the nut in the center and see if this will allow it to properly retract.
@roonzacar7276
@roonzacar7276 10 лет назад
Thanks for the quick response, loosening the nut does help a little but have noticed that the pull start mechanism rewinds well outside of the crankcase but when I install it on the mower it doesn't have as much tension, any suggestions?
@Pushmowerrepair
@Pushmowerrepair 10 лет назад
Roonza Car If that is the case i would suspect it is something to do with the mechanism that spins the crankshaft not properly retracting once it has sprung out when the cord is pulled.

@evermorestful

How do you fit the pull start mechanism back onto the mower? Mine is not turning the blades when reinstalled? Am I not lining it up properly and if so how does it need to be lined up?
@Pushmowerrepair
@Pushmowerrepair 10 лет назад
If the Pullstart is not turning the blades it's likely the little tabs that are meant to spring out are under to much pressure, or the clip is improperly installed stopping them from moving. check to see if the clips spring out when the cord is pulled.

@evermorestful 10 лет назад

Thanks heaps BUT... Every time I reassemble, it's a bit tight and won't rewind, undo the nut a tiny bit and it works fine. Whats wrong?
@Pushmowerrepair
@Pushmowerrepair 10 лет назад
Hi the nut on the starter does not need to be very tight, aslong as its not going to easily come undone it should be fine. if your nut is loose enough that it would easily come undone you may have to use a small washer to space out the nut so it puts less pressure on the starter, or undo the nut until it reaches the point at which it works and get some Loctite to keep the nut in place.
