16:25 WHY TF DID I SAY THEY HAD BEARDS HERE?? I SWEAR THEY HAD BEARDS IN THIS SCENE? AM I GOING CRAZY YALL edit: i also stupidly called undertale a "horror" game! ima little silly sometimes!!
@@MikasaMyBeloved im so glad u added the extra info telling us ur not a feminist bc we all know feminists hate the patriarchy which is the best system in place (obviously) and who actually respects those emotional females amirite? 🤣 🙄🙄
@@MikasaMyBeloved it's okay feminist isn't a dirty word- if you think women deserve equality and not being sexualised everywhere on earth you're a feminist. but yeah we get a bad rep bc of Some of them
I was blown away by the whole movie. I watched it with some friends and we all loved it. The visuals, the characters, the memes. I loved this. I can’t wait to see what Dreamworks will do for their next movies
Love your reviews dude, and especially love how passionate you are about animation, so many people love to put that “for kids” label on animated content, but it really isn’t just for kids, it’s an experience everyone can enjoy, and it has so much potential. Thanks for another awesome vid man :)
i hope i expressed that! that yes some animated movies are for kids cuz thats what sells. but with this movie we see that isnt always the case. adults will get into it when companies stop trying to water everything down
First time ever I felt fear from a villain from a animated movie. I did get spoiled to that he was death, but that didn't ruin it. I thought this movie was gonna be a 7 at best but no it was a 10 out of 10
Love this review! You dive deep into the horror elements of the film and what makes it all work and tie together perfectly. It’s always nice seeing someone very passionate about animation! Hopefully Dreamworks keep up this streak of great movies
I first assumed the blood on puss' head was wine or something else, like in a lot of other movies too and I was pretty speechless (although already being quiet) seeing it was actual blood and I'm sure I wasn't the only one
I grew up with Puss in boots. I loved watching the tv show and the movies he was in. He was one of my favorite characters and still is. I always admired the way his character was so fearless and confident. So to see Puss give up because of he was so scared, that his pride and power was taken away from him in just one scene just hurt something inside of me. I low key sobbed watching that happen. It was like i was in the story and I was helpless to do anything except watch. But I loved watching this movie, the power these animators held over me was JUST STRONG. Everything about this movie was just perfect.
"Animation is a (kids') genre" is something that DreamWorks might finally be able to change people's minds on. Animation is not a genre, it's a medium, and it needs to be treated as such. I'm glad that it's starting to become more expressed in the work that more mainstream studios such as DreamWorks are beginning to put out. The visuals have spark and personality and *life,* and the stories are getting better and better with well-developed themes and the characters to deliver them without pulling any punches. We need more of that. As a person that can't stand anime for the art styles and dies every time I hear someone talking about one with good stories to tell because I just can't make myself watch them, I'm glad that western animation is slowly starting to catch up in terms of respecting itself enough to begin to, even if slowly, expand its target audience. If studios get the confidence to make big-budget animated horror movies, I'll gladly pay to go see it even if it turns out bad because that little niche needs to be expanded significantly because as a horror enjoyer and an animation enthusiast, there is simply not enough of it past a few foreign films I was able to find through some very exhausting research.
This movie feels so much like one of those old westerns that I'd be shocked if it wasn't inspired by them! And in general, this is so much better than it had any right to be. It's clever, it's scary, it's amazing to look at and has some of the best writing and dialogue I've heard in years. Jack's reaction to the cricket as well as the cricket's growing frustration over Jack's apathy never fail to make me laugh
12:15 that wasn't just what you thought, you know what I thought when I saw the blue flowers? they have SPIKES, you can see the beauty and you can love the smell of the flowers, but once you touch them, you're going to feel "hurt" something I didn't expected coming from Perrito "world", but it makes so much sense coming from him, he doesn't really care about the bad things in the world, that's why he can appreciate the flowers without being hurt by them, something the cats really can't at the first time, and I MEAN IT, just think by yourself like the movie made you think lol | Kitty Softpaws and puss in boots literally didn't trusted each at first, only in the half of the movie she trusted him, just like the flowers that attacked them when they didn't trusted the flowers, I think that world has so much more to offer in terms of character dynamics, is a shame we didn't got to see more
this movie was so good, and the Shrek soundtrack fading in at the end made me lose it. I love the new crispy comical way dreamworks is leaning in, it feels so fresh. Hyped for more animated movies from dreamworks
This movie is honestly just incredible! I’ve seen it twice at the cinemas now. I can’t wait for the future of the shrek franchise too. Whenever the 5th mainline movie does eventually come out. Probably by the time Toy Story 5 does… (cough, cough) lol
I think it’s actually fun that they didn’t get the wish, because they had all said before it went by birthday wish rules, where if you say it it won’t come and in the end everyone had said their wish, and none came true
15:22 they did all get their wish without getting the paper. Goldilocks got her perfect family, Puss stopped fearing for death and therefore can now live out his best life that he wanted, kitty softpaws was able to trust the other characters in the end, and if you want to be technical, Purrito got to be a service dog.
I know this video is a little older now but I’m glad you went through the horror parts of this movies animation. It was immediately the first thing I’m sure a lot is noticed being that you usually don’t get a sense of fear too much from watching a kids movie. But because it’s a kids movie, it had to be more psychologically scary than practically. Which is why this animation is dare I say a masterpiece in the way it makes someone scared of a conflict/ character by just hearing the noise queues that they make. That to me is EXTREMELY video-gamey because as soon as you hear something in a video game it usually means a specific thing was done or correlates to something. Now that is excellent way of doing horror in a pg family movie because psychological can be easier to do than more legitimate horror. Really glad you made a video on this because I also hope they make use of this more in animation going forward! :)
IMHO Jack is a better character in general and death is the overhyped one. Death dominates in the areas they excel, but Jack is more well rounded than most people think he is. If they played him more seriously like they did with death he would be one of the greatest villains of all time
If someone is curious about what Death says to Puss. Por qué diablos tengo que jugar con mi comida. It translate to: Why the hell I had to play with my food. And Puss response: Hasta la muerte. Is a way of saying goodbye, it literally translates to: until death
Fun fact: in my culture, death is a curse put on life by a young and jealous god, and after she was banished by her sisters to our moon she realized the pain it caused and she created shape changing reapers to collect the souls of the dead and bring them to her on the moon where she takes care of them. The reapers show up in the form of whoever the soul loves the most to help ease them into it, and for children she collects and guides them herself.
Excellent review, your passion for what this film has to offer & animation as a whole is clear throughout. Consider me subscribed, excited to see more 👍
Hey! I know you probably won’t see this but if you want a good live action movie to review. I highly recommend the Grand Budapest Hotel! The movie has a great use of color pallets! They are effectively used and I recommend checking out Wes Anderson’s work!
i also like how when Goldi read the line about "what you want is already in front of you" isnt forgotten, like she got what she wanted, a family, Puss - a little more complicated but i thought of "A Life"
I love the second one. My favorite movie. But I do think the first one is a little underrated. It was very funny and had some nice action and backstory for puss in boots as well. Also kitty softpaws was a great new character introduced.
I am Venezuelan, and here there is a legend called "el silbon" or the whistling man if you translate it literally. And well basically it's a big scary man whistling around until he catches you, something like wolf. And in the legend it's said that if you hear the whistle close it's because he is far away but, if you hear the whistle far away, it is because he is very close to you. And I headcanon that in the wolf, I find it quite terrifying because it mess up your sense of space enteraly and just applying that to death itself is fascinating and would scare the shit out of me.
Every time I see a fantasy protagonist have to deal with mental illness I look at when the story it came from was released and most of the time it's after 2010. The reason I do that is because I once saw a video by a guy called Lost in Discovery who spoke about how a character from a book called The Way of Kings, one of my favorite books, was the start of a new era of fantasy protagonists who deal with more than just the struggles of life but also the struggles of mental illness. I haven't seen a reason to say its wrong yet because most of the times I see mental illness depicted it has been from something after 2010, the book's release year.
When I was heading to my afterschool sports club, upon entering the room, my best friend played the Death Whistle and walked towards me, and _I kid you not,_ it played out exactly like the scene in the movie. I am *GENUINELY* terrified of that whistle. Another example is when my friend was randomly scrolling through TikTok, and I was doing my own thing. Then he stumbles upon the death whistle, which immediately sends me into panic mode as my heart starts beating rapidly.
Honestly i really miss the days where we would get shows like lenore the dead cute little girl or salad fingers-even tho both are really old and have pretty eh animation quality they are still so unique and i crave more gothic creepy horror animated shows like them Also i like that you mentioned BATIM for a second cause i feel just like with stop motion-the rubberhose art style work so well with horror too, idk how to expline it but something about games like happy mouse and BATIM mixing rubberhose and horror toghter just feels so oddly right
2:00 this is exactly what I aim to bring more into the 3D animation world with the show that I've been working on. I completely agree that horror is not nearly represented enough in the animated world and HUGE amount of awesome things that an animated horror film could do compared to a live action horror film. It's one of the key reasons I started making the show in the first place!
No but after I saw the movie and walked out of the theater there was a some kind of siren off in the distance and I SWEAR it sounded like a whistle and I started freaking out. Death was iconic but the whistle haunted me even after seeing the movie. Such a great movie.
About the whistle, if you read the speckled band, you may remember the protagonists being followed by a clanging metal noise and a whistle. Sound familiar with scythes and deaths whistle?
Early on I was expecting Purito to be the secret villain character... Basically I was thinking he was gunna do a Wheatley (from Portal)... Like by the time we get to the star he'd be corrupted by Puss and Kitty and just try and use the wish to go power hungry or something... Idk...
how come some animals can talk and others can't in shrek / puss in boots do some animals get diagnosed with a syndrome or a disorder that allows them to have the type of vocal cords that humans have and can talk like humans bc of genetics or something like some humans can get shizophriena and see and hear things that others cant bc of genetics and others don't get schizophriena # ###############@@@@@@@@~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~@@@@@@@@@@@@@@#################@@@~~~~~~~~~~~~~@@@***##########@@##@@
There's a reason why a lot of home animated movies appeal more to kids is because animated movies cost a lot to make so I need a wider audience so we could make more money hopefully
In the beginning, puss in boots is a jerk who doesn’t value life since he has 9 of them. But then when he ran out of 8 of them, he learned to value his last life. And I had the same or a similar reaction to puss in boots every time I heard deaths dreadful whisle. Puss in boots is a masterpiece and so close to being flawless.
I kinda get what you mean about the fact that the ending's anti-clamactic, but what's important to understand is that not getting the wish, is part of Puss' character arc. Puss has a WANT (what he thinks will make him happy) and a NEED (what will actually make him happy). His want is to get all his lives back and be everybody's favorite fearless hero, but his need is to ACTUALLY live and surround himself with the people he cares about. If he had gotten the wish message would be gone, and the moral of the story would vanish.
somehow im just hearing about kung fu panda 4!! i really hope they get the chance to make that movie the staff dreamworks have seem really dedicated to making movies and understanding characters, after seeing puss in boots 2 i have complete faith in this studio, they earned that at least

I would argue that the movie perfected Terror, rather than horror. The amount of people who have admitted feeling absolute dread knowing (the wolf) was coming is Terror.
