I don't think Death/Lobo is a villain. He just comes to collect but Puss was so arrogant he made it personal. The game of life, no one gets out alive. As Lobo said "Live your life, live it well"
@@user-ey3by2zx3r he's not a villain, he's an antagonist. Him being a villain implies that what he does is wrong, but he's DEATH. Not metaphorically, or rhetorically, or any other fancy way. He IS death. And no one escapes death. Is he evil for doing his job? No, but he is still an antagonizing force for Puss. Death isn't a villain because he's a force of nature. He's doing a job that would supposedly keep some kind of universal balance. Is death just supposed to not be death?
@@himarisuzuki5208 yea death is a natural thing not death comming at you with 2 sickles 😐 once again we are talking about the movie not real life 🤣 in the movie he comes after death sure you can cheat death but death doesn't come for you trying to kill you or will stop once you learned a lesson. Death is trying to kill boots and not in the natural death way clown
@@himarisuzuki5208 First of all It doesnt matter that Puss didn't value his 9 lives. Its still not death's job to make it personal and kill someone EARLY
I mean...Jack Horner saw to that. He's everything that makes a Shrek villain brilliant, but here's the thing about Death... Actually, the thing about Puss in Boots, The Last Wish, the thing that made me watch the movie in the first place: Whoever thought to write Puss losing 8 of his 9 lives, that is the single most Shrek kind of story in the best way. I thought the animation in the trailer looked amazing, but I couldn't imagine making a movie about a cat trying to gain back their 9 lives without being interesting... But oh my God! Imagine being even better than that!! Having Boots laugh at the face of Death, and Death literally taking that personally. Making him actually terrifying. I felt him in the church bell fight (and he was there). I felt him when the bears arrived at Mama Luna's. Is it the Bears? Is it Death? Both?? I'm still not sure! Good Lord, what an amazing movie. It's got me excited for Shrek 5. For sure. If Shrek 5 isn't as good as The Last Wish, fine, but it's gonna be good.
@@Aflay1 if Shrek 5 isn't going to be as good as Puss In Boots 2 then I say, long live the king. I will be expecting Puss In Boots 3. Normally any movie series that goes beyond 3 movies will go down, so I hope they'll stop at Puss 3 to preserve their reputation.
At this point in the story I thought Puss is the only one that can see him. But what makes him 10x better was the fact that at the end it is revealed that everyone can actually see him. It shows that he's straight up Death, and he's as REAL as it gets.
The line he said at his first appearance "Everyone thinks they'll be the one to defeat me. But no one's escaped me yet" really hits different after knowing that he's DEATH STRAIGHT UP!
I love his eye-roll when he talks about how he's not being metaphorical, rhetorical, poetical or theoretical. Like he's fed up with edgelords calling themselves death. Kind of like Jack does at the wishing star
Well he does have many people that signifies death. The grim reaper, Anubis, One of the Greek Gods (is it Thanatos or something?) and many others that had somehow got 2-3 digit body count that history remembered.
If you want to get really technical when it comes to categorizing who “Death” is in Greek Mythology, you should go with Thanatos. Thanatos is considered the god of death, and carries peoples souls to the shores of the dead. You could also say that Hermes is death, because he also serves the same function from time to time. Even Persephone herself carried some of those who died at a young age into the underworld. However, for nearly all, death is Thanatos. Then you might be wondering, what about Charon and Hades? Well, Charon is just the middle man. He takes people to the underworld from the shores of the dead And for Hades, he is the Ruler of the underworld. He’s basically just the guy who has to keep the place in order, and occasionally judge a person of extreme importance. So, TLDR Thanatos is death straight up, and everyone else is either just a helper, or someone who deals with you after you’re already dead.
Holy fuck. I just noticed, while actually wearing my 7.1 surround headset, that a ton of specific words from Death were actually played in a way it fully immerses you. It's coming from literally everywhere at once. Instead of being more directional to signal the location of the character speaking. This wolf was literally looming all over us.
This is true and you’ll also notice that almost all the camera angles when viewing him are from an upwards angle or low shots. It really sells the feeling of impending doom looming over us.
I love how the Wolf clarifies that he's not a metaphorical or figurative Death in anyway, but that he is just plain old Death. To totally kill any theories that he's like - an ancient beast that people thought was the grim reaper, or a bounty hunter that calls himself death, or some other not-quite-Death-like being.
I like how he just says it in a way someone from this generation would say it. “No, I don’t mean it in a fancy way. I’m death. Straight up.” Normally doesn’t sound menacing but somehow is. Edit: Jesus guys it was just how I thought someone from this generation would say it, and it sounded menacing to me. No need to call me out on it.
@@darthsquid2107 same, everyone hyped up that quote but when i watched the scene in theaters the moment he said "straight up" like that i snorted LMAO
Everyone actually thinks Death is a wolf in this movie. He's appeared as a wolf because Puss is a cat. His shape changes depending on who crosses paths with Death.
I loved both Death and Jack Horner in this movie. Jack’s design was off-putting but that was the point, and he was just unapologetically evil. Refreshing. Death was the perfect main antagonist though.
I dont get why people think death isnt an villian. He is very sadistic while tormenting puss and he didnt even need to do shit. he can just wait for the natural course of life and wait for him to die but he didnt like cats so he decided to be petty and cheat his way to cut his life short. He did not have any obligation to kill puss he was just petty.
@@jpiny4854 he's not a villain because he's not genuinely evil, death went after puss because he saw the way he wasted all lives and never took any of them for granted, besides saying he laughed in death's face. but when death saw that puss had changed, he desisted from doing so. if death was a villain, he would have killed puss without hesitation (because a villain in a movie is always going to be the personification of genuine evil). as he didn't kill, he made it clear that death's ambitions just went against the protagonist's (this is the antagonist concept), but in the end death's ambitions changed and he didn't have to do that. the movie's real villain is big jack, clearly.
@@C4SSYDEE A villian does not have to be pure evil to still be considered a villian, they can still have hornor and their own beliefs about whats right and wrong. Its about if their actions are justifiable or not in wich i fail to see how death trying to kill puss is justifiable. You say that death got a little ofended about how puss lives HIS lifes and that gives him full permission to try to kill him and be sadistic about it. Thats like seeing someone wasting their food so you pull out a bat and hit them in the head with full force, like yeah wasting food is stupid but its their food and just because you got offended by it its okay to crack their skull open for the choice that does not affect anyone but themselves. Even if puss was gonna end up killing himself anyway why does death has to do shit why does he care about that. Thats like seeing someone who does extreme and dangerous sports & almost dies every week so you shoot them in the head with a shotgun and later say "well he was gonna die in one of these days, he cleary did not value his own life so it does not matter that i killed him" like thats some jigsaw shit. Yeah he did spare puss at the end of the movie but he made it clear that making puss change as a person was not his intentions he just wanted to kill him and he sure as hell did try & almost succeed if it wasnt for the gatito blade puss wouldve fucking died at the end.
Death is worse than any bountyhunter, he's a debt collector. While s bountyhunter comes for the money he can gain, a collector comes for what he's owed.
I seriously love when the antagonist makes the protagonist shit his pants the moments he sees him, not like a rock in your shoe, but as a fucking minefield
“And I don’t mean it metaphorically, rhetorically or poetically or theoretically or in any other fancy way, I’m death straight up” chills me to the bones also making me laugh so hard that I can’t breathe 💀
Rather, he's persuading Puss to give him a reason why he shouldn't claim his life right then and there. If Puss didn't make his case, Death would cull him from behind and call it a day.
Nah not true he really looks like he enjoys his job he is constantly laughing and says he loves the smell of fear and he tought and he wanted to kill puss because he was arrogant and was so angry when he appreciated live because he wanted to kill him
This is actually an antagonist who is a force of nature, but pursuing Puss out of his own interests. Death can actually wait until Puss dies the regular way, but since Death feels disrespected he's going to humiliate Puss and then take his life a little early because Puss isn't going to cherish his life anyway. So this character is very interesting in a theatrical sense.
Not even, Puss is still alive. He isn’t evil, he’s just pissed off and wants to prove a point. Honestly its like that one friend who goes too far trying to prove a point only this time it’s justified.
“And I don’t mean it metaphorically or rhetorically or poetically or theoretically or any other fancy way. I’m Death, straight up.” A kids movie has no business going this hard
The way Death pronounces the word "FEAR" gives you goosebumps, DreamWorks made a great Oscar - deserving character. I also want to say that the voice actor of Death made his voice terrifying, it looks amazing. I also want to say that the voice actor of Death did a good job, making Death not only frightening with his appearance, but also with his deep voice, it looks amazing
@@Shiestynfiesty not really, the grim reaper is just one way to actually represent the concept of death, they just used a wolf for this movie. They're the physical representations of the same thing (death).
@@Shiestynfiesty It actually does not matter how death is represented, heck, you may not even want to represent it, Dreamworks just chose the wolf (instead of the overused grim reaper) because they wanted to, and they really nailed it.
"But puss in boots laughs at the face of fear, riiigghht?" "But youre not laughing now" Both are really cold lines seeing as he's using puss's own words against him
@@L0LZZYT69 grim reaper doesn't have lips, can't make the 'p' 'm' 'b' 'f' 'q' 'v' and 'w' noises. Don't believe me? Clench your teeth and try making those noises without using your lips
I think it's more because the voice actor is actually Brazilian. Actually, in this movie all the main characters: Puss, Softpaws, Perrito, and Death are all hispanic speakers; and as someone that is also one, the fact that they mixed languages from time to time, really kinda made it be even greater of a movie.
When the wolf first appeared out of nowhere in the bar, I thought that was the Grim Reaper. When Puss in Boots said he's a bounty hunter, I thought true, they'd never be ballsy enough to put death in a children's cartoon. Glad my expectations were subverted both times.
Bro when he said “I’m death. STRAIGHT UP.” That’s when I was like, oh they really did that huh. Like they went ALL IN . Freaking insane line . This was an animated movie for adults that kids can watch , just like the OG shrek, except this one took a life of its own. Deeper, more serious even. A deep metaphor for one’s own mortality. And just overall a badass action movie with one of the sickest villains EVER.
@@Demo-cj5fd i say this on all shorts I come across lmao. It's more like the meme where someone says something completely unrelated. Ig I didn't realize people would interpret it that way
