This is why Frieza and Cell from DBZ are pure evil, and while they’re not as strong as Majin Buu, they’re a lot better as villains because of the charisma of their performances, they’re just so much fun to watch.

I'm going to respectfully but heavily disagree here, though I love the more 'Intellectual Evils' of Frieza and Cell and other various Fictional Monsters. Characters like Majin Buu (or Kid Buss specifically), I'd argue showcase an entirely different side of Pure Evil that I find can be enjoyable and that's the Unrestrained, The Truly Psychopathic, and Insane kind of Evil that holds no real other side than a pure Manic Glee from causing and Pursuing Pain, Chaos, and Destruction, if not doing all that they can to Ensure and Revel in it. It's that type of Pure Evil I think that also deserves a fair bit of credit as no matter how you might feel personally (and of course, everyone is welcome to have a preference for any kind of Villain) it's those types I think that really represent an Unmatchable kind of Evil that threatens and Challenges our Heroes so much to at times their Deepest Ends, which serves to only make it all the Sweeter when it's a necessity part of The Conflict of their Story to Confront them if not somehow Beat Them

The thing I find interesting is during the cave of the lost souls scene Puss already recognized how arrogant he was in his past lives when death showed up and it felt like the wishing star itself was at odds with him speaking through his past lives. Like, "wtf are you doing you're interrupting his character arc this is my thing get out of here"
@LordTyph
@LordTyph 2 месяца назад
I think that's because he REALLY wanted to kill Puss and didn't want him to have that realization. Since if he did... well, Death wouldn't be able to go after an arrogant little legend. But that's an interesting idea, the idea that the Wishing Star is effectively trying to stave off Death itself... or maybe is manipulating his movements to drive the point home that Puss doesn't need more lives; he needs to value the one he has left.

Am I the only person who strongly believes Kitty was lying about not going to the wedding? I thought this was obvious but I haven't seen a single review that agrees with me. She was letting Puss off the hook because she realized how torn up he was about it while also rewriting history so she wasn't humiliated. Why would she be that furious over Puss not attending a wedding she had no plans of attending herself? Is she that bitter because she failed to stand Puss up. That doesn't make sense! No. She wanted to put it behind them and so invented a past where they were equally at fault. She wasn't just playing the victim card. She was furious. Edit: They discussed this more after I wrote this.
@Blitzwaffen
@Blitzwaffen 9 месяцев назад
She absolutely was lying about going. We even have her eavesdropping on Puss's regrets for not showing up and the movie establishes they have a spark between them still. Kitty also knows how stubborn puss is to admit he is at fault (See the short about the death involving the cannon). So hearing him admit to her face he was wrong would be an eye opening moment. Rather than let puss be torn up about that moment for the rest of his life, she redirects it, and makes him think neither was there, while she still points out his 'legendary hero ego' so it's not completely forgotten.

52:15 Even if the target doesn't respect his life, tormenting them with sadistic glee is still pretty evil Also, his final line in Spanish "Why did I go to play with my food!?" shows it was a "game" to him, which is easier to notice in Spanish. And Puss character development ruined the game for Death If we take everything into context, Death went out of his way to break both physically and mentally one guy, all out of spite, while enjoying every second of it. He enjoyed it so much that he was frustrated at the fact Puss grew up to the point the person he spitefully and sadically pursued was technically gone

very true.All in all tho this entire movie on deaths part was personal fun. the enjoyment of hunting down an arrogant egotistical narcissistic "legend", tearing him down mentally and getting rid of him since nothing of value to the world would be lost if that version of puss died. thats also why at the end when he says "i dont see him anymore" hes acknowledging that the one before him isnt the one he came to kill. not the one he broke the laws of reality to hunt down. This is just puss. that's it. and i think this beautiful.

I love everything about death in this movie from his weapons to his lines to the fact that he manifests as a wolf, and speaking of his wolf design the animators did an amazing job with his clothing to the hints that he really is death before the reveal, like the shots of cream Puss I has drank, being on his 9th, the fact he got visibly annoyed at puss saying that he ‘laughs in the face of death’ by scratching the counter, he does the coin in the eyes thing(The Greeks placed coins on the eyes of their dead relatives so they could pay the ferry man to cross the river styx to the afterlife,) only Puss sees him and he doesn’t appear on the map even his presence at the giant attack in the beginning of the movie. It’s all so impactful but the best part is the whistle that tells Puss he is nearby as it can terrify him without even seeing death, put him on edge even more. I don’t think enough people understand how impactful the whistle is as it the fact that he uses two senses to alert his prey theoretically he could just silently stalk Puss, but he does enjoy the hunt and the fear of his prey which puts him on a razor’s edge between villain and force of nature. He thoroughly enjoys Puss’s discomfort and anyone who has anxiety knows certain things can set you off, and anyone who has had a panic attack understands what Puss feels. I have never seen a panic attack don so well in any movie or tv show, animated or not. All in all I cannot say enough good things about death.

My favorite thing about Death that i have not seen some one talk about is that at the boss fight Death does not leave the star he only leaves the fire pit. the only character main that does not see death as a wolf or as a concept in the whole movie is Jack who dies in the star which Death has not left. the phenix (symbol of rebirth) and the cricket (every ones conscience) might have seen Death while waiting around the star while flying both not needing a wish, but that does not really mater they are immortal ideas like death but not as legendary

Here's what would tip it nux. As an antagonist, death would just wait for a reckless and disrespectful (in regards to his safety and respect of death) person as puss. However, death here, is actively attempting murder. If you don't save someone from getting hit by a truck, you may be an ass. If you shove someone in front of the truck, you're a murderer.

The thing about Goldie is something that I believe all adopted children can relate to. Even if you were adopted by the most loving,compassionate, supportive family, when you find out you are adopted it really messes you up. "Why didn't they want me? What did I do wrong? Am I really that unlovable that even my own mother couldn't love me?" Yes you can work your way through it but it's still a hell of a blow. And it's not that you don't love your adoptive family but sometimes there are layers you have to work through dealing with the shock.

My personal favorite character from the movie is actually Goldilocks. Her arch wasn't grand and extensive, she wasn't a pure evil monster or an unstoppable force of nature, but that is what I love about her. Her character developed all came down to one important decision and a realization of what she really wants from life. It's simple but impactful and important. I mean seriously try thinking of the scene where baby is being slowly pulled up in that current that will kill him and goldilocks has to make the big decision of making the wish she wanted for the "perfect" family damning the current one or to save them even if it means she may not get that wish. If she chose to damn the family that love her that are willing to do anything to make her happy even if it comes at the cost of themselves then wouldn't it be a major disappointment. I know I would have been upset with her. I love how while they aren't a major "villain" they themselves are aware of that by the end of it. The movie was aware of it. The scene where the map goes haywire and says that what Goldilocks wishes for has always been with her. The thing driving her she already had and just needed to see it and come to terms with it. A surprisingly realistic problem people have. The saying goes you don't know what you have until it's gone. It's not uncommon for people to fixate on what's wrong in their life and not see what is just right. That is until is isn't an has become another bigger problem. I like to think how Goldilocks hesitates with taking the wish that knowing that she would be disappointed in herself if she made the mistake of letting her bear family die. That is actually what I love about this film as a whole is how it isn't afraid to tackle real problems such as kitties trust issues, puss in boots fear of his own mortality, and goldilocks perfectionism (that could have stemmed from being a lonely orphan wishing more from life). That is basically what I would summarize as her big character flaw she has to overcome throughout the movie. She is obsessed with her "perfect" or "just right" that doesn't realize how good things are for her now. The issue with being a perfectionists is if you are always looking up for the grand ideal you'll never see the beauty in what's before you. (Note) Ok, I'll admit I am likely a bit biased. I relate to goldilocks a little too much. She's still a great character. I stand by that.

But this is coming from a guy that doesn't think Western media hasn't come out with anything good since the 2000s. 2010's forward was just dogshit in rehashes and remakes and reduce of old properties cuz nobody has imagination anymore

Yeah, death is evil in this instance because his intent is malice. He feels disrespect from Puss and wants him to feel powerless because of that. In the end, Puss faces death without cowering because helearns that while death is inevitable, he can and should appreciate the life he has and respect life and death both.

I've always hated the idea of forgiving a villain. Like, just because the villain is charming and could be seen as a devastating villain, it doesn't mean that they didn't do the massive crimes that they do (think how most batman media handles Mr. Freeze as an example). Jack Horner was made in the hopes of convincing an audience that he's irredeemable and has no moral skew in his ideologies to counteract that irredeemable attitude. But one problem I've seen a couple of times is that people say things like "Its messed up that everyone gets their happy ending but this one guy" when they don't put into question if he deserves to have a happy ending, people are so programmed to accept forgiveness within the atrocities made on mankind through shows and movies, that it doesnt register to them that villians are supposed to be antagonists and not rivals. That's also why I like puss and goldies rivalry in the movie, because that's how you redeem a character.

15:24 you explain perfectly why everybody thinks this is a great movie is because just putting in just the tiniest bit of effort make something that would just normally be mid to extraordinary that is how far Western media has fallen

Idk why so many people think the last scene is "just a teaser" for Shrek 5. This works on its own, fits to the story and to Puss' character growth. The whole encounter with Death teached him to set his priorities straight. Instead of wasting his last life on pretending to be an outlaw-legend in some random villages for meaningless "fans" who are mostly on his side for money, he chooses to meet his old friends. Because he knows he doesn't have much time, canonically he's most likely in his middle age, and he has no "cheat codes" anymore. Even tho he never died in a serious way, there's a huge possibility he may die in some ordinary way, like every other person who has only one life. The last scene honestly brings tears to my eyes, it's just a perfect conclusion to how Puss changed as a person, and how inspirational it is.

If I turn my mind to the villain's I most enjoy, it really comes down to how well they're presented. They can just be plain greedy, past the point of redemption, or have given in to some base negative, or ideal which they can't give up now. Within that, they can be simple, or complex. But... if you're going to make a villain complex, the effort needs to be put in to make their fall work. If they're to be redeemed, that has to make sense. But then... if we use the term villain, it really ought to be for the irredeemable, otherwise they more commonly fit antagonist. Horner has some unspoken potential depth to how he got where he was. I can imagine him being told he had everything he could want, in a world of magic and fairy tales that make it all seem mundane. But even if they took the time to flesh that out, give nuance and complexity to the path he took, he's still decided he doesn't care about anyone but himself. That, is what makes him a villain.

52:11 I gotta disagree with you here, Nux. Death is actively trying to take somebody’s life, and operate outside of the realm that he’s supposed to. He even admits it just like Jack Horner. If being evil is solely dependent upon perspective, then it could be said that Jack Horner isn’t evil. Death actively knows what he’s doing is wrong. He’s definitely a villain.

Goldylock's crime family wasn't completely just or completely evil. They were JUST WRONG ( or right ). They were meant to mirror team friendship and show a possible path Puss could take. You have the good, the bad, and the ugly, or in their words, the "just right".

I agree with the warranted punishment aspect mentioned regarding Death's pursuit. I still don't see Death as a villain, just more as an antagonist. And the reason I still see it this despite this explanation is the fact of Death as an overall aspect. In most tales, not just fairy tales, Death is not seen as the one who actively takes one's life, but the one who collects the soul and guides it to the afterlife, whichever it may be. Obviously, Death has gotten bad rep over the millennia because no one likes it when someone dies. And yes, as it's said multiple times in this video, Dreamworks continues to subvert these aspects of fairy tales, including Death. Instead of Death being a guide for the soul to the afterlife, now Death is what people imagine it to be: a hunter, a killer, a sadistic collector. And with the context of this movie and how the story is set up, it probably allows both concepts of Death as an aspect and character to be present. As mentioned before, Death is usually doing one job: guiding souls to the afterlife. Sometimes, they don't want to die, sometimes they've made their peace. With the ones that are ready, Death probably sees it as an easy grab but also a somewhat boring day's work. With those who are not ready, he probably gets to put on a good scary face at least or go on a small hunt at most, a little bit more fun for Death. In THIS story, Death has been collecting lives from Puss' adventures and is one away from a full collection of a self-absorbed, over confident "legend who thought he was immortal." And while Death probably wants that last piece, his job in the universe probably doesn't allow him to outright kill a living being, so he appears as a wolf bounty hunter with swordplay that actually matches AND surpasses Puss' skill and experience. So, if anything, Death could be seen more like an anti-hero/rival to the main protagonist. Not one that will reappear every movie or anything, but one that definitely sticks out and could easily provide a scale of power or skill within this universe in general.
