This movie has all 3 types of antagonists. The antagonist that you can genuinely sympathize with, the antagonist that you genuinely hate, and the antagonist that is just cool to hate.

Sympathetic would be Goldi and the bears AND Death. You clearly understand that he is fed up with Puss and his I-don’t-give-a-shit attitude towards dying.

I divide them as the: -Sympathetic antagonist that you can understand and even in moments root for. -Pure evil antagonist that is willing to burn the world in order to get what he wants. -Antagonist that works more as a force of chaos and nature, one that cannot be reason with.

I think what makes it great is that it's purely a psychological perspective. They could have easily made Death the character look like a generic Grim Reaper with a scythe to make it super obvious to the kids what he's about, but because the film deep dives into Puss's flaws as a character specifically they instead show it as something Puss himself would fear the most dying to: the deadliest predator to smaller animals and the only bounty hunter that looks capable of bringing down the ideal hero Puss in Boots.

Something I found super clever was the foreshadowing of the wolf. Right before his introduction scene, the doctor symbolizes Puss dying by blowing out a candle. Then, in the bar just a few moments before the wolf makes his entrance, a candle blows out. This is a clever way to visually hint to the audience the wolf’s true role as death and I love it. So much thought and effort went into this movie.
@howdy7455
@howdy7455 Год назад
I don’t know if you can call this foreshadowing, but here’s a nice detail : when he meets Puss, the Wolf says that « everyone thinks they’ll be the one to defeat me, but no one’s escaped me yet ». At first, it sounds like a generic "evil guy" sentence, but with context, you understand that it’s not just a badass line. It’s a fact. No one can escape death. This movie is just brilliant.

Can't even call Death a villain in my opinion, because he's done nothing evil at all. He is more of an antagonist to antagonise the hero throughout the film, and is an unstoppable force of nature. In my opinion Death is the best Dreamwork antagonist (villains also included into the category as antagonists as their role is to antagonist the hero also), with Lord Shen from Kung Fu Panda 2 and Drago Bludvist from How to Train Your Dragon 2 coming in together as second. The reason being: Death is just straight up terrifying. Death don't even need any schemes or plans or secret weapons like Lord Shen and Drago Bludvist to be powerful. Whenever he comes on screen, you can be sure he dominates the scene, and frankly speaking he is even more dominating and intimidating than Lord Shen and Drago Bludvist. In both Kung Fu Panda 2 and How to Train Your Dragon 2, we both know the heroes actually have a fighting chance, if not can even defeat the villain fair and square but only lost by getting done in by petty schemes. Death on the other hand, dominated the hero one-sidedly and for once we actually see the hero had no chance in hell to win at all, even facing the very real likely possibility of dying. It is like encountering Darth Vader in Star Wars. You hear the heavy mechanical breathing and you just know things are going to go bad for the heroes and they are no longer in control of the situation. And the only thing they can do is try to escape and survive.

@@HoradeFidges Especially since blood is usually not done in a kids movie (even though personally I think this is suited as much or even more for teens and adults to understand the movie) The last time DreamWorks put blood in a movie was the prince of Egypt, no one has ever bled in the Shrek franchise before. They even make this stronger by the opening song (which some people find the most useless part of the movie, but was actually usefull to show his arrogance) in which they put knives around his head on the table and sing that he has never been cut or even had a scratch before. And then this villain shows up and scratches him within 5 minutes This just added to the surprise factor in my opinion.

Without going into spoilers one of my favourite things about him is all the hints about who he really is, I've seen this film twice now and on my second viewing I noticed a lot more foreshadowing for that brilliant twist, I also love that they don't shy away from making him generally scary, the film doesn't talk down to kids and knows that it's ok to let kids be scared even ill admit whenever I heard his whistle I got genuine chills In general this movie is not only my second favourite shrek movie behind the second, but it might be one of my top 10 even top 5 favourite dreamworks movies

Everything about the villains felt well balanced, from their respective motivation to their actions, confrontations with the heroes, and conclusions. This is easily one of the best examples of juggling between multiple villains in a single film, let alone a sequel. And the way they tied in to Puss' character arc and the overall theme felt very compelling. The animation is also absolutely gorgeous! It's nice that they went for a more stylized look this time around, and it really aided with both the Wishing Star journey and the Wolf scenes. I really hope Dreamworks experiments more with these elements in their future films. Also, Happy New Year!

Like from the very first scene with Puss and Wolf/Death, I instantly recognized him to be a top tier dreamworks villian, hands down one of the greatest villians i have ever seen been produced by Dreamworks. KFP villians, PEAK. HTTYD villians, PEAK. Ramses, PEAK. Shrek villians, PEAK (maybe not Prince charming). Wolf/Death is hands down the best villian Dreamworks came out with in today’s standards. The way he gives Puss ptsd with his last life, drawing actual blood which horrifies Puss to the point of giving up is scored perfectly. And when he gets his confidence back, the way Wolf/Death follows him around as he’s whistling is just so haunting its perfect, same with how Puss reacts to it to just want to run away from him in whatever situation he’s currently in, and lets not even begin with the Cave scene, my gosh was that the perfect scene with Puss and Wolf/Death, easily the best scene in the movie

The entire terrain and "struggle" the characters must pass COMPLETELY changes based on who held the map last so due to circumstance, we get to see the development of multiple characters as they go through their struggle. If they straight up released a Shrek movie that looked like this I’m sure tons of people would skip it bc it doesn’t have the realistic art style it was known for (there’s even people complaining that puss in boots 2 doesn’t have it). But having people see this film before and see that it works incredibly well with the Shrek universe is going to make them more open to the studio using this art style for the 5th Shrek. "Into the Spiderverse" really had an amazing effect on the medium of animation from how to properly design the aesthetics while doing your own thing and how to properly create an engaging narrative. Sounds like the BBW intro mirrors the "What did your say your name was?" "Olivia Octavius" *pin drop* from "Into the Spiderverse."

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is the best animated film I've seen since Moana in 2016. A truly superb mix of excellent plot, great themes, wonderfully written and voice acted characters, and gorgeous CGI animation. So glad word of mouth on RU-vid got me to see it. I would never have even considered checking it out. I'm not even a Shrek fan lol.

The most astonishing thing about this movie is how it managed to balance so many characters PERFECTLY. Like... whoever put this together and edited it... freaking masterpiece. It would be so easy to give some of these characters too much or too little screen time. But they perfectly nail it for every single one.

This is one of my top three movies of all time. Seriously. Of course, nothing has beaten Rango yet. Just everything in the movie was so (chef kiss). The stylization, the symbolism, the jokes, the characters, ughhhh it's all so good. I was a DreamWorks kid, grew up on Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, Shrek (my parents first date was Shrek), and the Bad Guys and Last Wish have really drawn me back to the studio.

The villains in the movie are amazing, the likeable villains(Goldie and 3 bears) the goofy one that you like because he's goofy but you hate cause he's not a good person(jack horner), and the cool one with the cool design, voice, and that ominous whistle(death), and the dog you'd expect to be annoying is actually likable and has a sad backstory overshadowed by their happy personality.

honestly i felt very VERY connected to the little details in the story on how the dog wanted to be a therapy dog, and how you see puss get high anxiety and the dog just relaxing him??? hits me hard. I deal with GAD and PD, I always wanted a little buddy to help me calm down. honestly a lot of shows or movies fail to explain anxiety or how its shown, but this movie is the pure best example. over all its amazing, animation, character designs and acting beautiful

8:53 spider-verse style is actually a good name for it. It reminds us of the massive impact on the entirety of animation that spider-verse had, that movie changed animation. It showed us that you don't need animated movies to look like real life, it can be pretty much anything.

This speaks to me and a lot of us guys cuz it breaks down the toxic masculine norms and social conventions of what a successful life is. It's okay to be scared and vulnerable and it's okay to seek comfort in a plutonic male companion in an intimate manor. That one's appearance and achievements of greatness and latching onto it will stop you from living your life to the fullest and it's okay to let go of an unreachable dream to settle down and enjoy life. "Smell the roses" as it's shown. There is always someone with a worse life than you trying to be a good person and live a full life so we should appreciate what we have and don't need to "shoot for the stars" to be happy. Anyone who has had a near death experience, fear disorders, depression or panic attacks would benefit greatly from this movie and this gives a great message to kids growing up which I wish I had back then.

that panic attack puss has is my favourite scene in the entire movie and hit me so hard with how accurate it was and how accurate perrito being able to calm puss down was. this movie is just so good, easily rivalling my love for the how to train your dragon franchise (Which is saying something because I absolutely love those movies and the first two series (nine realms haven't seen yet but the dragon designs have disappointed me)). Like I'll admit that I liked Shrek but never really cared more about it than saying yeah it's good but I always preferred how to train your dragon and kung fu panda over it because at the time I hadn't found my love for folktales and myths yet. Even now it's now that much of my cup of tea. this movie made me feel seen with how puss reacted to death because I genuinely fear death like that and this movie helped me fear it a bit less

I love that you actually UNDERSTAND where Death is coming from. Like-like THINK ABOUT THAT. I was nodding my head like "Yeah yeah yeah, that makes sense-WAIT." when Death was going on his rant about how he hates the very idea of more people having more than one life. The fact that you can somewhat understand where Death was coming from, even if you don't SYMPATHIZE with him since it's DEATH that's good writing. I love that this movie not only has the three villain archetypes, which are the evil villain, the sympathetic villain, and the other. But this movie also has the 3 basic fears awe all have. So what do I mean by this? In this movie, the evil villain is Jack Horner. The sympathetic villain is Goldilocks. The other is Death. Now of the 3 fears we have unnatural fear, natural fear, and fear of the unknown that's also all over this movie. And I can see this movie being analyzed by people MONTHS down the line, even years from now. It's so good.

The angry line at the end Death says in Spanish was something like "Why the hell did I play with my food?!", as in Death absolutely let Puss go every time for the fun of it. If he really wanted to he could have killed Puss instantly, he just enjoyed inflicting fear upon him.

The thing about the characters is that it's much easier to already understand most of them because 4 of them are one of the most well known fairy tails ever, two others are simple, one doesn't need much elaboration by nature, and the others are the main characters, two of which already established before the movie. That makes it much easier to not go overboard on exposition, letting scenes be paced better.
