Great ideas. Inexpensive, convenient and practical is the way I roll. Also, you were smart to put your boxes in the open away from trees to protect the baby birds from predators.

Didn’t know what I was gonna do for my Mum birthdates. She’s almost 90 years. She doesn’t really want anything but this is a great idea I’m going to build her a bunch of bird houses put the rebar down and attach it to the galvanized conduit I know this sounds wrong 🙃 my Mum and Dad bothering her go out several times a week just taking pictures of birds. Out in the woods and parks. This will be perfect for them. Thank you so much for sharing your time and your videos I really really really really do appreciate it

Lol, Josh, you remember me telling you that you and I are alike in ways, well I have about twenty bird houses in the yard 😂. Not in the garden per say, but close enough. I like the idea of using the 1/2” EMT conduit though, surprisingly I’ve never thought of using that with my bird houses because I’m an a electrician and use conduit all the time LOL.

The boxes are simple to make and we use a compressed planter pot inside for easier clean out of their old nest. Placement of ours on the edge of the hedge rows and ~100ft apart. To protect you produce have some type of watering device located in the garden for the birds to drink from. Enjoy the birds.

We have five bluebird houses on our five acres. Lots of other species also that love our blueberries...….lol Do you have a video on your hoophouse. Also what direction is the hh facing? I subbed you this week and will be sharing you because of your content and knowledge. I like the fact you are not afraid to credit other growers. God Bless...…..

I don't have a video on my hoop house, but it's on my list. It is facing NE-SW (ish) so not ideal, but it's kind of where it fits on the property. And yeah, we all learn form somewhere. I'm just doing my part to share my knowledge and experience with others to help more people grow more food.

Hey Josh! I know that this is a old video, but I just found your channel and love your ideas! How do you guard again raccoons and other wildlife from climbing up the conduit and destroying your bird houses? I was thinking about greasing the conduit with lithium grease that I have from around the farm.

Do you ever have issues with birds taking your young lettuce ? I suspect a bird bath may help me, but the birds have decimated my lettuce this year (small scale home gardener)
@JoshSattinFarming
@JoshSattinFarming 5 лет назад
I haven't had issues with birds eating my lettuce, but that does sound a bit odd to me. What kind of birds? You can always keep some netting on your beds and that will keep out most animals from eating your crop. Or use some insect netting and then you have other pest protection too.

I do enjoy watching them too BUT, I don’t enjoy watching them put holes in all my tomatoes. As soon as they turn yellow, or the slightest bit orange, they’re ruined. Have lost so many big heirloom tomatoes to these wonderful birds. 🙄
@cpnotill9264
@cpnotill9264 5 лет назад
Try putting a few birdbaths around and they will stay out of your fruits. The birds are thirsty and that's why they are into your tomatoes. We put in three baths and boy do they love them! Good luck!!!!! 👍🌱🐦

Here is a possible idea to keep birds away. I saw this suggestion on another RU-vidr’s channel. I don’t remember the channel though. When first planting your maters have tomato cage or trellis up. Tie a few green and red shatterproof Christmas ornaments to them. This way the birds check them out while the plants are growing and by the time the maters are fruiting the birds will possibly leave them alone.

Please, don't touch a nest. Never, it's bad for eggs.
