Referring to a president who is no longer in office as a former president is factually correct. That is certainly how most people refer to presidents out of office. Or one could see dropping “former” if the person had served within the last 10-15 years, within most people’s living memory. Bush, Obama and Clinton (along with their wives) attended, along with Carter himself.
