Considering the fact that Russia helped India significantly to modernise after independence, it is appalling that they can't tell the difference between the Donbass and Ukraine. These regions in 2014 were occupied by the Russian speaking Ukrainains who broke away from the Kiev government that overhrew Yanukovich. Lughansk and Donets led the breakaway. I watched it on TV in 2014 + The Ukrainains then shelled these areas for 8 years, which is why the inhabitants had to flee. Putin intervened to stop the Russian speaking residents from being evicted from land they held for years....

Russia answered the prayers and requests for military assistance from the Donetsk People's Republic and the Lugansk People's Republic, both self-declared independent legally under the UN Charter. Under international law, according to Article 51 of the UN Charter, all states have the right to assist others militarily. Thus did Russia make the ultimate sacrifice once again to fight the Ukrofascism killing Russians for 8 years in Ukraine -- Kiev's "ATO" was declared illegal by the ICJ in Jan 2024.
