Furthermore, there was never any intention capturing Kyiv and Kharkiv, and nor is there now. Ukrainian territory outside the immediate area of Donbass and the land corridor to Crimea is only valuable to Russia as areas in which to attempt to reduce the Ukrainian armed forces. Putin will consider the war to be won when the entirety of Donbass is under Russian control and defended against Ukrainian and NATO attack.

To win this war all they have to do is remain in the fight. If they stop then Russia subjugate them if they continue then Russia has to take the pain of being so foolish.
