Vladimir Putin loves mentioning his strategic partnership with China. On top of that, he constantly underscores his warm relationship with China’s President Xi Jinping. However, this time, Putin’s visit to China seemed to reveal the dispute between the two allies, as Putin was given the cold shoulder in Beijing. China had reduced the Russian number of delegates from 25 to six. Moreover, no one was there to greet Putin… Jinping didn’t even shake hands with the Russian president during their meeting. Special seats had been allocated for him in the past, but, this time, he was put in the regular lodges in the Olympic Stadium. Russia’s head of state seemed rather lonely and sad. He was asleep by the time the Ukrainian national team came out onto the pitch. Putin returned to Moscow without an audience with Jinping while all the other invited leaders held meetings with the Chinese president one by one following the Olympic opening ceremony. Russia’s cold relationship with its one-and-only strong ally begs the question: Is Russia now alone?
