It has been clear for some time that Russia would probably send mechanized battalions to the Dnieper River after clearing Donbas of UAF and mercenary troops. The SMO did not include parts of Kharkiv oblast or Dnipropetrovsk oblast but there has been much fighting in the very large flat area of south Kharkiv and supply lines of western weapons have long used Dnipro city and others on the Dnieper, especially as Russia has degraded land routes from Poland and Romania. With the river as the main artery for transport of attacking and retreating assets and the wish to avoid damaging Zaporozhzhia city (1 of the 4 'fraternal' oblasts), Russian marines have tended to head north using the west bank of the river and will only return fire if fired upon. Long ago, Gerasimov and Shoigu laid plans to extend to Dnipro and be ready to choke the river narrows there without pushing WNW as Kiev and other cities are not of interest to Russia. However, the Kursk incursion -- no matter how ineffectual and plain stupid -- required more attention to Poltava and Russia's mechanized forces placed near Kremenchuk were used in part to prevent elements of the Kursk attack forces going too close to Belarus. However, the relatively small but elite Russian forces (with aviation assets) had primarily been placed there to swiftly block the Dnieper to supplies and prepare the way for armor (using 2 routes from Pokrovsk and Vulhedar) to either neutralize or bypass Pavlohrad and enter the suburbs and docks of Dnipro city -- also clearing the remaining explosives made for years in a cluster of valley towns west of the medium sized city. It it astonishing that Kiev rulers were stupid enough to concentrate equipment and sensitive materiel in Pavlohrad, with Russian heavy armor being a mere 100 km east and freedom of the skies. By using a single unitary Iskander missile with a penetration stage (range about 200 km maximum), Russia made a precision strike with least collateral damage to men on both sides. The AFU field commanders would not slow Russian forces unduly by defending Pavlohrad but it is now very likely that Moscow has selected Dnipro city for talks when an interim administration replaces the Zeleskyy dictatorship in the coming days. The city would be geographically and diplomatically ideal on Ukraine's might river and might become the administrative capital of some sort of federation of Ukraine after elections. Please stop using the expression "Putin's men" because Russian presidents alone are not C in C of the state's forces. The west might no like the fact that the Russian people have become even more unified since the Kursk idiocy but be clear that Russia's armed forces belong to the people and actions have to be approved by the Security Council and the Duma members on that council.
