"the Ukrainians are succeeding in making the Russians think that Crimea, the defence of Crimea, air and land, is a cost...too far.'

Mostly supply bottlenecks. The US is really the only NATO member who kept a substantial military budget post-Cold War and has defense commitments around the world. The ammunition production simply doesn't exist on the scale required right now. Ramping up production to meet demands is happening, but very slowly. It's a costly process and the average citizen of the supporting countries doesn't see the value in. There's also been an element of escalation management in western countries that've held them back from fully committing.

Having known Ukraine and Russia since 2000 (including having relatives in both countries and on Crimea and learning the Russian language to draw on primary sources), I've understood Russians simply don't feel agency. This distinguishes them from Ukrainians who did two revolutions this century. When Russia falls, it will come from within the power vertical, e.g. by an alliance between disillusioned military leaders and those who either want to protect the assets they stole during Putin's reign or others who may feel having been short-changed under the mafia state he's built.

America has spent many many many times more in Ukraine DESPITE the fact Ukraine winning is FAR MORE in the EUs and UKs national interests than it is Americas, and the only reason Ukraines military is doing as well as they are other than their bravery on the battlefield is because America has spent the last 10yrs building up their armed forces from the ground up and have them hundreds of billions in military equipment….
