Part of the agreement to get Ukraine to agree to give up their Nuclear Missiles under the 1994 Budapest Agreement was that Nato would help to protect them in the future, now they are being let down once again like the first time putin invaded Ukraine and took over Crimea. NATOs combined military, technological and economic ability to wage war exceeds Russia's by orders of magnitude, its not even close. However, that means that literally the only card Russia has to play is nuclear weapons, which is worrying. Its a choice of precipitous defeat, surrender or nukes (and of course the nukes also mean defeat, but not unavenged defeat). And what's the status of Russia's nuclear arsenal? Is it a functional fleet of land- and sub-launched ICBMs or is it a rusting pile of junk? I daresay that NATO intelligence has some idea but we the public obviously have none. Remember that even NATO intelligence wasn't fully aware quite how dysfunctional Russia's conventional forces were prior to 2022, or if they knew they weren't saying it out loud. Would anyone be insane enough to use nuclear weapons, knowing the inevitable response? My instinct is no, but then I'm not a sociopathic warmongering dictator so I'm probably not the best judge.

This conflict will end when Ukraine and Russia agree to stop fighting. In the meantime NATO members can independently help either side. NATO was originally a defensive alliance, but in the 1990s it got involved in the former Yugoslavia, and this discussion today is about Ukraine. I myself do not want to see NATO boots-on-the-ground fighting for a non-member country. Untold death and destruction would follow.
