PUTIN'S WAR: Russians on the advance “At a very high cost!” Ukraine's strategy a failure?
In eastern Ukraine, Russian troops have advanced into the eastern part of the long-contested city of Torezk. “The fighting is taking place in Torezk itself. The situation is unstable, with fighting going on literally for every building entrance,” said Anastassija Bobownikowa, spokeswoman for the responsible army group, on news television. According to her, the Russian units have already fought their way towards the city's central coal mine.
More than 30,000 people still lived in the mining town in the Donetsk region before the Russian invasion. Despite the fighting, thousands are still said to be holding out in the heavily destroyed urban area.
According to the Ukrainian general staff, heavy fighting also raged in the front section between Pokrowsk and Kurachowe. According to military observers on both sides, the Ukrainian troops are increasingly coming under pressure there near the city of Selydowe. Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian invasion for more than two and a half years.
