Putna Monastery, Suceava, Romania
Putna Monastery is a monastic orthodox place, it is one of the most important cultural, religious and artistic romanian place.
One of these legends says that once, in a very dark night, while Daniel Sihastrul was praying deep in his cell in the valley cattle, and outside mingled howling wolves with grunts bears, would come to him, to ask hosting, Stefan-Voda, who, returning from a hunt in the mountains, had wandered through the place. On that occasion, the old hermit, having secret discussion with the Ruler, asked him to build nearby on the beautiful valley of Putnei a church, "for God to help all his affairs."
The monastery is located 33 km northwest of the town of Radauti, Suceava county, northern Moldova.
The monastery's church was devastated by the armies of Timuş Hmelnițki.
The reconstruction of the church were started by Prince George Stephen (1653-1658) in 1654 and completed in the reign of Eustatie Dabija (1661-1665), in 1662.
The entrance to the monastery is under the vaulted arch of a tower composed of a ground floor and a first floor, on whose eastern facade is Moldova emblem which dated from 1471.
The chapel was painted in the technique "al fresco" in the period 1980-1984 by artists-brothers Michael and Gabriel Moroşan
According to old chronicles the building of the monastery, founded by Stephen the Great (whose tomb is located here), started in 1466 and was finished in 1469.
The only building remaining from the time of St. Stephen Prince is Treasure Tower whose construction was completed in 1481.
In it were housed in times of disorder, treasures of this holy shrine.
The monastery was an important cultural center; here they were copied manuscripts and precious miniatures were made. The sanctuary has a rich monastery museum, with embroideries, manuscripts, religious objects, icons etc.
As the poet Mihai Eminescu with John Slavici and other participants in the Great Celebration of Putna in August 1871 camped in those days in the upstairs hall, this building is called "The Tower of Eminescu".
