I paddled across Putnum to camp and fish at a few ponds in the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area.

This is one of my favorite spots in the Adirondacks. Back in 1973 I took my wife and 4 year old son on a short backpacking trip to “Grizzle Ocean.” It was our anniversary. It is one anniversary that my wife tells me that she will never forget. It is not because she enjoyed the trip. It is because backpacking was not her idea of the best way to celebrate a wedding anniversary! She was a good sport, though, and we all did have a good time. We slept in the lean-to while a thunder storm raged above us. In spite of the storm, I got one of the best night’s sleep ever. I love your videos. I have a 12 foot Hornbeck classic that I bought in 1991. Although I have had many boats of various kinds, I will never part with my 12 foot Hornbeck!

Haha, but memorable it was! Type 2 fun..miserable while its happening but enjoyable in retrospect. Maybe paddle across putnum and shorten the trail next time around or just go to the paradox brewery and relax.

Thank you for sharing. Spent all of my childhood camping Putnam Pond and fishing all the ponds you did in this video. Have hiked everyone of those trails. Bringing back memories!

Beautiful place with so many options. I did a winter trip on Putnum and found a few bass and red eared sunfish through the ice. Have some footage but haven't put it into a video to share.

That's such an awesome section of the park, sandwiched between two cool towns but still very wild.

After breaking off numerous rod tips bushwhacking to fishing spots in the ADK, and having to rewind line caught on a bush more times than I can count, I switched to a variety of collapsible and sectional lightweight spinning rods with spincast lightweight reels. My favorite is an under the rod trigger release spincast reel. These are easy to carry, pack, and store. I also carry a foldable plastic net that will fit into a pocket. Most of my gear I got 40 plus years ago so I don't know what is available now. I don't feel hampered by the portability when actually fishing. The lightweight tackle is actually a plus when fishing for brook trout. If you can find Vietnam era jungle fatigues in an Army Navy surplus store, they make ideal fishing outfits. They blend into the background when stream fishing. If you could find camo, that would be a bonus. Both the jacket and pants have numerous pockets for tackle, the cloth dries very quickly if you get wet or sweat, and is ripstop nylon. The sleeves are made to roll up. The pantlegs are tapered to fit easily into hip boots or waders. They have built in tie offs to keep out ticks and critters. Boonie hats make good fishing hats too. Most have a chin tie off to keep the hat from getting blown off on a breezy lake. Mosquitoes and blackflies can't bite thru the cloth. I wore my jacket out and outgrew the pants. I weighed a lot less in the Army. All ADK tested! These are secrets the current generation will not know!

Great trip David! Some of those shots were absolutely beautiful!!! Glad you're enjoying the Hornbeck :) I'll have mine out this week (although not a carry in trip). I'm still playing with the carry setup myself but haven't done the yolk yet. Looks like it worked pretty well.

Another great video, thanks for sharing! My girlfriend and I just went there about a month ago, awesome place. I think you're right about the ponds being stocked recently, we caught a bunch of those little brookies. We got a few bigger ones also but most were 6-8 inches.

David - Great to see you out with your new canoe. It's funny to see such gleaming wood on those gunwales. I'm sure it won't take much time for you to use it enough for a nice patina to develop. That's all for now. Take care and until next time....be well.

NatureIntoAction I’ve been tripping and backpacking in the Dacks since I was 15. I’m 61 now and still canoe tripping 5-6 times/year. Of all the places I’ve been (BWCA, WCPP, Alaska, etc) the Adirondacks are still on the top of my list. I think it’s because it’s #1 in my heart.

I'm just over 4hrs away and have been back 5x in the last 3 years, at least once per season. The fishing was good...seemed like a recent stocking of small fish in the area. I'd like to carry in to Pharaoh Lake and troll for a weekend...maybe hook into some Lakers. Probably decent bullhead fishing from camp just about anywhere too.

Love the light switch... Are your gunnels treated? If not try 50/50 Lindsey oil and Thompson's water seal apply it using a saturated cotton cloth just so it wets the wood a couple times a year. Looks like you had some wind well into the nights each day. Awesome morning mist and bird songs...were those salmon or rainbow? Didn't look like a brook trout.
