We completed the first step in building our cabin! Roughly 40,000 pounds (18143 kg) of concrete, mixed on-site, and a total of 21 pier foundations! Just in time before the cold weather sets in.

40K LBS of concrete, roughly 10 yards. Good job you 2. I've been in the concrete industry for 30 years and I know how hard that work is. 👏

I was a brick layer for probably the same time and I was a "paid" Hod Carrier for maybe 5 years before that. I worked with my dad since I was old enough to lift a pair of tongs with about 10 bricks in them. So I have physically, mixed, pushed in a wheelbarrow and shovel God only knows how much cement and poured a foundation or driveway or two. I kind of have a love hate feeling about the mud mixer. This project is ideal and I have seen a few others and think they are great then I look at the cost $$$$$ then I think about not having it and needing a pump truck which probably is not an option here. It probably paid for itself in this situation. Great teamwork too I don't picture these two in a screaming match, pretty even keeled! lol

The mixer is really great for taking on a project like this. It really reduces the amount of labor to do the job. It was a big relief to complete the concrete before winter set in. I think we still have a few more weeks before things start to freeze up good here. But we will continue to work on the cabin if the weather allows! I'm glad we can share our progress with everyone!

When cutting Sonotube, get a piece of it cut the size you need, cut a slit in it and place around tube. Draw your strait line around and keep sliding it down to draw your next line. Far more efficient than measuring all around in several places. I did the same thing my first time until someone finally suggested I stop wasting my time

Great job team. You two are amazing. Katie , you are an inspiration and a role model to all young girls out there that need direction or are lost and need a path to womanhood to see what life skills are important to know for personal growth, self development, for mental and physical strength but also for longevity, self reliance and to keep learning and challenging yourself everyday. Great vids and narrations from both.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I really do believe that it is important for women to learn many of these skills. While I enjoy the more typical feminine skill set of cooking, gardening, and maintaining the home, I love learning new skills that improve our quality of life and feel that it is important for both of us to have a hand in building this life. Your kind words and support mean so much, and I hope to inspire young women out there to follow their dreams and don't fear trying new things, even if it is out of the norm for today's standards.

Thank you! It is a DIY budget-friendly option in this area for sure. If your frost line is not as deep it will be a much less daunting task for sure. Check out pricing on steel screw piers in your area just in case it may be a more cost-effective option in your area. Here with low competition, it was 3x the price, unfortunately.

@northtoalaska2022
@northtoalaska2022 3 месяца назад
Thanks, depending on the area there are better options. In the lower 48, the cost for screw piles is more competitive and better priced in some areas than concrete peirs. Unfortunately, here the cost was triple compared to concrete. Also if a bell auger is available some money could be saved in concrete when doing concrete piers like this. One was not available for rent in our area. In rocky areas the auger won't work well, an excavator, big feet footings, and full-length sonotubes would then be required. If our cabin was much bigger, I would have poured a slab. If money was unlimited, full crawlspace foundation.

Next to impossible to get a large concrete truck in - All it would do, IF you could get one there, is get stuck and create a great mud pool!! More manual labour this way, but preventing a host of other problems! Keep up the good work. Slow and steacy wins the race!

All you need to tie the rebar is a pair of channel lock pliers probably # 6 the with the hook on one grip 2 twist and your done . I was a rod buster for 9 years . In my youth it was great money back in the mid 60's but life expectancy was short most were very hard drinkers.

When I first saw that cement mixer on the gate episode I wasn't sold on it, but it was like having a mini cement truck for the sonotubes. It was perfect! Are you working off of prints? I mean it looks like a good strong build.
@northtoalaska2022
@northtoalaska2022 11 месяцев назад
The mixer works out really nice when mixing hundreds of bags! I did draw up my own set of prints for this project. We should have included the drawings in the video... I was able to find free engineering prints online for a very similar size structure to base mine off of. I used online calculators to calculate the soil load-bearing capacity and figure out how many peirs I would need and correct spacing for my structure weight. It is really up to the builder to do this here because we have no codes to follow or inspections outside city limits in alaska. I am no engineer, but i made my best effort to build it to last many years and hold up to the frequent earthquakes and wind. Thanks for watching!

Awesome job! That mixer is pretty cool. 40,000 lbs one bag at a time 🥵

@northtoalaska2022 11 месяцев назад
It worked out great for the foundation! We have a bunch of other projects planned for it as well. Hopefully, it will hold up great for us. Unfortunately, the 80 lb bags are too heavy for Katie to lift, so I put on my back brace and pushed through every bag! It was a great workout, to be honest ! Ten years from now, I would probably pay the ridiculous pump truck fees to get concrete where I need it instead... I'm not sure how long I will have my youth 😄
@goatstead814
@goatstead814 11 месяцев назад
@@northtoalaska2022 Those 80 pounders will make you feel your age for sure. That mixer looked like it put out a consistent product which takes the guesswork out of it. Katie did a great job keeping you plum while drilling the holes. I have that same auger for my skid steer but I broke the shaft last time I used it. Look forward to your next video.
@northtoalaska2022
@northtoalaska2022 11 месяцев назад
That is wild that the shaft broke on your auger! We were able to rent this auger locally for a decent price. Realy made fast work of the holes for us.
