Greetings in Jesus Name! I just heard a message from Bro French titled 'A Light from Heaven'. He defined the name Saul as meaning Destroyer. I actually look up some things that Preacher's say to find out whether they are delivering correct definitions. In this particular sermon, Bro French is incorrect. The name Saul means, Asked or Desired. It does not mean Destroyer!
I did not hear it, however, the name Saul means the following. "From the Hebrew name שָׁאוּל (Sha'ul) which meant "asked for, prayed for". This was the name of the first king of Israel, as told in the Old Testament. Before the end of his reign he lost favour with God, and after a defeat by the Philistines he was succeeded by David as king. In the New Testament, Saul was the original Hebrew name of the apostle Paul." If Bro. French said that, he was mistaken; perhaps was ill at the time, or simply misread something. Thank you for responding. I am well aware of the meaning of the name. I use the e-Sword Bible program with all of its many Bibles, Concordances and Dictionaries to look up the definitions of such.
