Putting in WORK | Transforming our Homestead | VLOG

We're still working hard to clear all of the box elder trees from our property. Today, we'll focus on the main area right behind the house, with some of the larger trees. One in particular, is leaning right at our garden shed - so this one will be a bit of a challenge. We'll also introduce you to our son Preston who is wrapping his career in the US Navy, and will be staying with us for a bit this summer while he searches for a place of his own in (yes, the new white dog belongs to him).
About 1/2 way through our work, we'll stop to take a break to cook up some dinner on the Blackstone, and then wrap things up for the day. Hope you enjoyed another "vlog style" video - this one was fun to shoot ♥

Off topic, I'd just like to say what a handsome couple you 2 are. You seem to get along well too. Not so easy, but you make it look so, maybe because you're both have the same values... I'm watching a friend struggle through her marriage after 40 plus years. Heartbreaking... Thank you for sharing you lives with us. Very calming ❤

All the work you do together! I makes one appreciate our forebears who homesteaded with no tractors or power tools... maybe horses and heavy-duty hand saws. Your place is so lovely and it's nice that you have given yourselves this year to get other things done. BTW, here, in the Pacific Northwest, Douglas Firs are almost weeds! They grow so fast. At our place, the trees that were about 5 ft when we moved in were about 50 ft when we cut them down 10 yes later (seriously overshadowing the garden). Their stumps now have containers of flowers perched on them.

You are so right, one has to have the desire and wherewithall to live our kind of lifestyle. We too have rural farm where we garden can/preserve as much as we can, plus I built a home away from home in Northern Mn. Keeps the two of us jumping and active, at 68 we still enjoy a hard days work. I can not put it into words but its so satifying at the end of a productive day, its seductive.

There’s the characteristic red veins in the box elders at the 2:50 mark. You should do a drone zoom out at the end of your videos - like they used to do on Mod Squad. Your 2:30 shot could have been the ending fade away. Do more of those. Yeah, tree notch way, way, too deep. It could have barber chaired, or fell backwards, if the learn was wrong. On bigger trees, you should do a bore cut, pound in wedges, then just cut the back strap to release the tree. The fun part is predicting and slightly controlling with the hinge, where you want the tree to land.

😊 I do miss your gardening videos but you have a GREAT PLAYLIST with topics I rewatch. Glad you are taking care of those other things. We just had 6 walnut trees removed. Wowza did it change our property. We did add 40 grand fir trees to the property though so can’t wait for the transformation in 5 years

It’s hard to believe how different this part of your property looks from when you started! You’ve done a lot of work clearing things out. I really hate to see large trees taken down, but I understand when they are basically trash trees. I love it that you both like working on your property.

There is always endless project :) Glad you get to have Preston with you for a while, I miss my big kids :( . Sometimes gardening has to wait while we share labour on another project, it’s just how it has to happen so one person doesn’t get overworked and the project gets completed in a timely manner. We often share labour with some friends so there are lots of hands on deck to complete it. Good luck!

Speaking of SAWING SAFETY: My dad has a habit of cutting out in the woods by himself in Washtenaw County. Last event, he stumbled and fell on the running chainsaw and it went halfway through his knee...... I took him a bag of goodies to the hospital including some plastic halloween sawed off limbs from the Dollar Store and told him I'd replace whatever he cut off!

I used to have a one acre non-HOA property and I thought that was too much! 😂We had a custom pool and an above the ground hot tub, so they just added to the monthly maintenance of the property and a two-story 4500 square foot home! I never want to own anything that big again! It is a lot of work and commitment! But your property is very beautiful and serene with the lush green grass. And that dog Woody is a charmer!

I just have a 1/3 acre house and yard in a neighborhood, but my backyard is mostly garden. I did a lot of wheelbarrow moving until this year and then got a riding lawn mower with a trailer. Game changer. My fence gate is narrow so not much else fits through as is. I wish my lawn mower had a front loader attachment I could buy!
