Yamaha brass instruments of all types continue to be go-tos for many players and their trombones are no different! The 891Z Custom small bore tenor trombone has been a favorite in the shop for quite a few years and it's smaller sibling, the 897Z, has had a place in the trombone community but when we ended up with both of them in the shop at the same time I knew it was the perfect time to put them to the test side by side! It is always interesting to me how bore size can affect one's experience with an instrument (sometimes in different ways then you might expect) and these two trombones were no different! Take a listen and let us know your thoughts!

If you’ve still got your Pickett hookup, try the 891 with the NY and Wycliffe’s “Master” mouthpiece. That’s my daily driver and it’s amazing.

I like them both and they play and sound different, yet like sisters. Prefer the 891 for lead and perhaps 897 for solo.

Great pair of horns! I'm a great fan of Yamaha horns but haven't played on either of these two horns

Great and comprehensive comparison of the two siblings; I was riveted to the screen. You got some nice, loose chops as well :) That being stated, I really couldn't discern the difference in timbre between the two, and dropping $2.6K on a horn that is designed after the American-Made genuine article (King 2-B) and its entire family of 2-Bs for a mere couple of hundies more, I'm just having a little difficulty justifying the high price tag. I have an old friend that swears by his Yammy, but 20 years ago when he bought his, the difference in price was much greater between his Yammy and the 2-B. As a trumpeter by trade, I'm looking for a

I think similar. It is better to buy used. More value for the money in my opinion. Those Yamaha are good trombones, but it is better going with a good used King 2B (or 3B) from the 50's to 1980. I think $1,000-$1,600 is better than $2,600 and the most important thing is that those vintage American horns hold their value. That means you can sell them in the future for the same price you bought 'em. Good luck in your searching.

@@CH47U Agreed! I actually bought a cheap, used Mendini trombone from my local music store, and while it's DEFINITELY no 2-B, it is literally brand new, both inside the bore and outside the slide stockings. I've pretty much slowed down in my old age (64 y/o) and no longer wail on either trumpet or trombone, so I found that the cheap horn was ample sufficiency for what I need anymore. That being said, I have a Yamaha pro flugel coming in the mail this week hehe It's been about 13 years since I had my Cousenon "Queenie". I had to sell it under duress and it will be wonderful to play one once again :) Thanks for your input, Jarhead; always good to hear something from a like-minded cat🤙🤙

I like 891 better than 897, maybe because I play Conn 6H.

Judging by my ears you definitely sounded a lot broader, more crisp, and more open on the 891 compared to the 897

You've mention it here & there, but have you done a vid specifically on bore size characteristics? Typically it's covered simply as vague statements such as small bore is bright for jazz and large bore is dark for orchestra, but what about feel and playability?

I suspect that the 7c pairs better with the 897. When I play on .508 bores, I do best with Doug Elliott’s backbores specifically for that size. To my ears, you sound better on the 897!
