In 2020 this video ages well. Historical context is an absolute vital tool in studying any social situation, Viet family history for societal change.

Christa, I just watched this. It is SO good that I am saving it! Even though I've been doing research for several years, this was very helpful and something I can pass along to others.

An excellent, informative video Crista, covering an often overlooked or underappreciated aspect of genealogy. History transforms our research from just names and dates to living people, putting "flesh on the bones" so to speak. While much may still be left to conjecture in how events affected our ancestors, it does give us in a sense a time machine, a glimpse into the world as they saw it. Very well done.

My paternal grandmother was born and raised a Quaker until she reached adulthood. Thank you for the topic. Always thought my History degree was a natural segway to genealogy.

An important issue to research in understanding historical context are the number of epidemics our ancestors endured, i.e. the yellow fever and flu epidemics which caused the death of thousands.

I love this! I am going through and putting each family into a story for my non-genealogy interested kids to make it more interesting for them. Very good information here.

Great video. I have a lot of men in my family named "Van Buren." When I started genealogy I thought I might be related to Pres. Martin Van Buren. (I'm not.) But after years of digging I discovered that one of my g-g-g-g uncles campaigned for Martin Van Buren in the 1830s in Ohio and that one of my g-g-g-g grandmother's cousins was married to Francis Preston Blair, who was Pres Van Buren's campaign manager in 1830. That explains why I have 7 men in the family named Van Buren.

I have used storyworth to record grandparents history. It sends to the extended family and we love hearing about their lives. A great resource for historical context.

I use the notes field to transcribe information also, but I put the word "Federal" with the federal census information or state abbreviation with the state census. In many cases there were states census in between federal census years.

How do I find obituaries from 1890’s in Minnesota ?
@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS 5 лет назад
Check on places like Newspapers.com for digitized copies of historic newspapers. If they don't have the papers you need, contact the local library in the area of Minnesota where the family lived to see if they have microfilm/fiche of the historic papers that they can research for you.

Do you know whether her adoption was handled by the state or by a private organization? Have you contacted them to see if they have paperwork?

Wow, can go back to your 6th great grandmother! I'm hitting brick walls at the 2nd and 3rd great grandparents! UGH! Everybody is in Italy at this point and the records aren't available on Ancestry.com.
