A walkthrough for printing a card or badge on an Epson L805 (or L800) printer using Epson R260 drivers and an aftermarket ID Card Tray. In the video I am using simple PVC cards, this will also work with NFC and RFID smart cards and access cards.

Hi Salian, thanks for the video! My only problem is that my Epson Artisan 50 with the 2 cards tray (identical as yours) when I print with photoshop using your template, there is a circle in the middle that doesn't print like for the whole in the middle of the CDs, also it doesn't print around the edges of my cards as it cuts the printing to a CD size printing with a circle around... Ant idea how to fix this?

Very important to use the driver from the epson 230 printer to print on pvc card on the L805 (driver for the L805 will print a cd shape). It should be on the description. Link for the template does not work.

Color calibration is a mystical art, you can try playing around with the calibration, the photoshop color profiles and the printer color settings by watching other videos specifically about color calibrating printers, and trying out small prints on paper. The L805 is a photo printer, it is definitely capable of being calibrated for decent color reproduction.

I used to use an Epson ET-2550 ru-vid.comUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 , an early model of the ink tank style. It worked well, but had one nuisance that drove me up the wall; if you didn't put it in high quality print mode you'd get a streak across the page. I'm happy to say I have yet to see this with this printer. The print quality has been fantastic so far, the set up was super easy. All in all I'm very happy with this printer.

L805 driver will restrict the print to the CD area. Print using the R260 driver which did not have those restrictions.

You are very observant. Indeed. The L805 driver only supports printing in a round printable area on CD/DVDs from the second tray. If you use the L805 driver, you will not be able to print on the complete area of the PVC card. It is essential to print via the R260 driver to bypass this restriction and print on the entire ID card area.

Sir, As per your video. I all set done with my Epson L805. (R260 Drivers, Virtual Usb Port & R260 Printer Series) & When I put the ID card tray on Cd/Dvd Tray. That's ok. But when i give the print command with R260 Printer Driver as per your instruction then Blink last Two Orange light on a printer. (ink light & Paper light). I tried more times to remove this. so tray pickup. but couldn't do this. So tray not pickup. Pl. help....

Hello good evening. Pls why does my Epson l850 for a none printable circle when am printing an id card. What I means is that not all the write up show ok n the cars and after printing I wld see something like a circle in the id card like that of a cd. Why is that happening?

There is no actual "ID Card" mode. There is a CD/DVD mode, where the printer prints only in a round CD/DVD area. In that mode, the L805 driver accepts items in the CD/DVD tray and restricts your print in the cut-out shape of a CD - however, but the older R260 driver does not, which is why we install that additional software (the R260 driver) and make sure we print through that R260 and not the L850. That's what this video is about.

If other prints have brighter colors as expected and only this one is light, look at the color profile of the artwork file. If that doesn't work, bump up the saturation on the artwork.

The issue seems to be with the PVC card surface. Leave the ink to dry for a while. If it dries decently then you can encapsulate the card with UV Resin, or a Matt clear coat from a spray can, or simply a pouch or hard cover. Else try sublimation ink.

Try a different ink (dye sublimation ink) or a different PVC card. Else leave it to dry for a longer while. You can optionally UV-coat the card once dry, or even use a clear coat spray paint. If it scratches easily even after drying, just pop it into a protective cover.

You need to colour calibrate your monitor, and work in CMYK mode in your image editing program (Photoshop/Corel)

Evolis is more expensive and specifically designed for card printing. L805 is not a card printer, it is a high quality photo printer which can also unofficially print cards with some driver adjustments and an aftermarket card tray. If you have the budget and enough usage quantity, go for Evolis. If you dont have the budget, and want a dual purpose card + photo printer, go for the Epson L805.

The L805 officially supports printing to CD/DVD surfaces, and from the printer head's perspective a PVC ID card is the same. So this should not damage the head in any way unless you use unusually thick or home-made PVC cards.

Quality is slightly lower than dedicated card printers, as it is also a function of the match between PVC card and inks used. L805 is a versatile photo printer primarily made for quality photographic prints.

We are using compatible drivers from an old printer (R260) which did not restrict prints to the CD shape. So by printing using that driver we are able to print whole ID cards.

Color is managed by Photoshop or printer settings. it's a photo printer, so am sure the color can be adjusted fairly accurately with some trial and error on the settings.

Hello there, thanks for making a clip with Epson L805. Regarding the card tray, do I need to install an individual software to get the tray work with the printer, or I simply install the Epson software & let everything work accordingly?

The L805 already supports printing on CD/DVD surfaces with the included second tray. So the printer knows about trays and in fact has two tray slots. The only difference with the aftermarket tray is this has a depression in the shape of an ID card instead of a CD. The L805 driver restricts your print in the cut-out shape of a CD however, but the R260 driver does not, which is why we install that driver. The additional software is the R260 driver.

I have read your post and tried to print to the r260 instead of the Epson L800. I receive an error message saying "Attempting to connect to a different device from that specified in the driver. Check the driver settings and the device." I have installed both drivers and can print from the Epson L800 just fine Is there any way to force print? Thank you

I did not receive such an error. Make sure you install the L800 driver first, then you have selected the same port (something like USB0001) while installing the R260. Then print using R260.

Dennis Alalay there would be a more specific error, or pattern of flashing lights. The first step is to read the exact error message and lights pattern. The link to the manual is in the description and may help you.

Open up the ID Card Template (.PSD file) in Photoshop, edit it as per your requirements, and give a print to the R260 printer with card tray and cards inserted.

The color will scrape off the card if scratched. You can spray the card with a matte transparent spray, or coat it with a UV-hardening coating, or slip it into a clear pouch, or laminate it. Anything to protect it from scratches.

Make sure you are printing with R260 and not L805 selected.

+JAP Apparel I prefer to first install the proper L800 drivers, then note down the installed port, and finally install the R260 drivers on top of that, pointing it to the same port. If you are getting error lights, make sure you consult the L800 manual, these combinations of error lights look tricky but they do accurately describe the error if you check in the table given in the manual.

Card dimensions are fairly standard but perhaps the template has a different kind of card outline than the cards you are using? You can contact your blank card manufacturer/vendor or the card tray seller for templates as well. Another thing I can think of is if it thinks it's printing on a CD and restricting the print area.

Try the other side of the card, or some other card material. Personally I used TCL branded PVC cards with original canon ink, which combination worked for me.

Absolutely, I installed the L805 driver first, then used the port information to install the R260 driver, then printed using the R260 driver as you can see at 2:11 in this video.

perhaps the port setting was not saved properly. When L805 is installed you need to note the port, and during the R260 installation the same port number should be given.

I am using the default ink which came with the printer. It worked for me, as I gave the cards out to my staff enclosed in a crystal case, No complaints yet. But some people recommend sublimation ink if you have complaints about the durability of the printed card.

Hi Pranab, I am getting an Issue in my ID card Tray II have installed R260 software and it is working fine but suddenly for the last 2 days when i insert the tray, it automatically ejecting it without printing. it is not printing on the tray, it was continuously ejecting the tray. Moreover i have just printed only 40 Cards and i bought the tray before a Month only. Please provide me a solution for it

Hi sir what kind of PVC Card i may used ? im so confuse. before im using a pvc card with plastic in top and bottom and a separate plastic to print the image and make a sandwich and laminate it. please help

I have used white PVC cards of TCL brand in the above video, and printed directly on it. I also put my cards in a clear shell case to protect from scratches. If you want a weather-resistant and scratch proof card, you can go for for resin coating and hardening under UV light.

It's a question of color calibration between the design software and the printer. You can try to edit the color profile, do calibration or just change settings by trial and error to reach an acceptable color tone.
