Heidi Juniper (PV informed teacher/ writer), with help from Michael Lunde (PV & trauma-informed community mental health counselor), presents on Radically Prioritizing Safety and Reciprocity in Unequal Power Relationships. This conversation dove into an under-explored paradox at the heart of applied polyvagal theory: as a teacher or consoler or other helping professional, how do you cultivate the genuine reciprocity necessary for true safety to emerge in a relationship with deep inherent power inequities?
Heidi shares an accessible sampling of connected insights and shared principles drawn from Steve Porges' and his colleague Ed Tronick's work, David Emerson's trauma-sensitive yoga, and Relational/Cultural Theory that help us envision what it looks and feels like to sensitively co-create safety, to proceed only with consent, to share power in partnership, to avoid/eliminate evaluation, to repair ruptures, and to be genuinely reciprocal.

Heidi is interested in hearing from anyone who has reflections or questions to offer in response to her talk. Feel free to reach out to her at akindfulheidi@gmail.com.
As came up at the end of the discussion time: we need more chances to connect with each other! In connection with this, Heidi is interested in hearing from anyone who'd be interested in helping form (or participate occasionally in) some sort of interactive group.
If interested, let her know what kind of group you might want to be a part of: One that gathered to listen to the body (somewhat in the way focusing-based "Changes" groups do), or more of a chance to engage in an emotionally-connected study group (more "heart" than "head" group) that discussed shared areas of interest connected to some of the core things Jan's work is based on.
(These areas could include: Gendlin and the felt sense, Carl Rogers, Porges and Polyvagal theory, the feminist psychology theorists, IFS, and other areas within relational neuroscience Jan draws upon--for instance, Dan Siegel's work with "mindsight.")
A third option could be: a group that did a blend of the above!
Also please specify if you would have an interest in occasionally helping to lead such a group.
About the Felt Sense Polyvagal Approach to Trauma & Addiction Group
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Felt Sense Polyvagal Approach to Trauma & Addiction Group is a place for you to explore with others, through a polyvagal lens, the experiences of trauma and addiction. We are focusing on understanding addiction through the lens of the nervous system, as an adaptive response to maladaptive environments. This group is growing in leaps and bounds indicating a hunger for change, for the kind of transformative change that polyvagal theory brings us. The group interacts online in the Polyvagal Institute Community on Mighty Network. Once every few weeks the group meets live on Zoom for an hour of exploration and discussion with a guest presenter.
