Background:
In Haiti there are approximately 140,000 people living with HIV/AIDS, about half of whom have not been tested, diagnosed, and initiated on antiretroviral therapy. This is primarily due to deep-seated fear and stigma toward the disease and inadequate strategies to reach high-risk populations with HIV testing and education.
Pwojè SIDA is an innovative community-based HIV testing initiative which saves lives and money, and serves all Haitians with health, dignity, and equality.
In order to achieve UNAIDS’ 90-90-90 goals by 2020 where 90% of the people living with HIV have been diagnosed, innovative community-based HIV testing strategies like Pwojè SIDA should be an integral part of the strategy in Haiti to end the HIV epidemic once and for all.
