Pynchon's "Against the Day" Part 1: "The Light Over the Ranges" 

The buffoonery of Franz Ferdinand was HILARIOUS.

I'm enjoying hearing your thoughts on this book. It's my favorite Pynchon novel. I've read it twice.

I love how he treats the merger of consciousness into the whole or all (a major theme of Gravity's Rainbow) as a quick aside as we watch the ball lightning return home knowing he will change.

Thanks for this really useful overview. I'm reading this along with the chumps of choice blog, about 200 pages in so far. Definitely not following along with the page by page annotations on the wiki, but taking it fairly slowly. The light over the ranges is a fantastic first part. Unless I missed it, you skipped over Kit Traverse being offered the scholarship at Yale which seems important from what I've read so far. There are also some very moving mediations on parenthood as a result of it. Anyway it's an insanely addictive book and I'm looking forward to watching your next video when I get to the end of part 2 :)

Thanks for the thoughts and comments everyone! You may have noticed I stopped doing a section-by-section breakdown, and I apologize for that. After checking my channel following a long absence, I realize I should've kept doing them! Two reasons why I stopped: 1.) I got absorbed in the book -- like, really absorbed -- and I didn't want to stop reading to do reviews. 2.) The BookChemist is so good at talking about Pynchon that I felt like I was just white noise on RU-vid. Go and check him out for everything Pynchon and Chabon. It is now summer, so I will begin doing more book reviews very soon. I've read a lot since finishing ATD in the spring, so keep checking back for more videos!

...Not to be a stickler, but I would've wanted someone to correct me as well: it's pronounced "Pynch-ON," rather than "Pynchin." (Confirmed by one of the few interview articles & also his own cameos in The Simpsons.)
