Last week I had the pleasure of travelling to Italy to do a food shoot for a week with the new Blackmagic PYXIS 6K
This was a commercial shoot, not just a camera test so naturally came with the normal pressures of real world shoots.
The client - The Fish Site and Mauritz in parcticular have very kindly said I can include some of the shots in this video! They will be producing a cookbook and series of delicious recipes which I can 100% vouch for!

It was an incredibly fun shoot and such a stunning location, the PYXIS performed really well. And I can't wait to take it out on some more shoots over the next few weeks!

Tilta made a V mount extension plate that directly connects to the Zcam. Because first cameras had the flush at the back as well. Now the new Zcam line is off tilt . I don’t know if the same plate will actually work for black magic pix. It be interesting to see if it would or if Tilta will come out with a solution.

Thanks for sharing your experience Dale. The orientation of those ports does seem to be a bit of a miss. Given the power consumption, v-mount seems to be more the way to go - going for a huge BPU battery, I'd worry about snapping the battery mount tabs as there's a lot of leverage from the battery if you knock it. Maybe it's built solidly enough though?
@Dale_Campbell
@Dale_Campbell 2 дня назад
@@alzibaba I’ve just picked up some 75wh BPU batteries and will be giving them a trial run this week. I know what you mean, but I figure this is a mount and battery type that has been around a while. So it is probably fine…

You can fix the rolling shutter with the gyro image stabilization in resolve. just add the effect and bring it down to 0. cleans up the rolling shutter a ton. ( just remember to put in camera/lens settings while your shooting.)
@Dale_Campbell
@Dale_Campbell День назад
This is something I’ll be trying out, the other side of rolling shutter that I didn’t really get into here as it gets a bit too in depth is the motion cadence. As the rolling shutter will have an impact on the subject in shot as they move around the frame, even when the camera itself is locked off… and this aspect can’t really be corrected. It is subtle and one of those things that won’t really be felt until you can make the comparison or if you’ve shot film/global shutter a lot. (This is more a general response that specifically as your good self, as I’m sure some of this is stuff you’re already familiar with 🙌)

Hey Xavier, I will have a review for the cineview Master on @diyphotography going live in a couple of weeks. Just got to test out a few more things, currently I’ve not used it with the receiver unit. Just working with the director iOS connection and iOS wireless so far. Mind you from what I’ve seen so far this is a really solid unit and the latency is just untouched outside of way more expensive systems!

@phrasalsyntax 2 дня назад
Thanks Dale for sharing your experience in such detail, you are providing good educational content to many people starting with Pyxis and Black magic. I wonder if it would have been better to shot on 6K (full res of the sensor) and just edit on a 4K timeline. The image is better when you shot in 6K and you get more detail, dynamic range and less noise. And Davinci can handle the downscaling from 6K to 4K flawlessly in real time (also you can use proxies if your computer is not powerful enough). By shooting in 6K FF you also make better use of the full resolution of the optics of the Canon FD lenses. I really see no point in shooting in 4K just to match the less performing B cam. It should always be the other way around: the B cam should adapt to the A cam requirements. JMHO
@Dale_Campbell
@Dale_Campbell 2 дня назад
@@phrasalsyntax thanks! The choice to shoot at the 4k DCI was down to data. In an ideal world I’d have shot at the full gate (or a closer crop) and a lower compression ratio. But that would have generated substantially more data. Sometimes these considerations win out, but I’ll be shooting some other things that explore the full gate and different compression settings over the next few weeks 🙌

This sensor is probably maxed out as far as frame rates and IQ so I would expect the next Pyxis will have and different sensor. Everytime Blackmagic comes out with a new body it is quickly followed by another better one within a few months to address limitation they had with the previous model. Internal NDs, swappable mount, new sensor based on the Ursa Cine line, higher frame rates, better rolling shutter and auto AF are some of the options likely to appear.
@hivetech4903
@hivetech4903 2 дня назад
That all sounds like stuff that would appear on a much higher end or non-cinema camera. BM do not have AF patent tech - that is not going to happen. There wasn't that much difference between the 6K & 6K pro. It will almost certainly be the same sensor, as BM could make a tonn of money selling a pro with just internal NDs & port & mount upgrades, just like they did with 6K pro.
@Dale_Campbell
@Dale_Campbell День назад
I don’t disagree in so far as there will be another camera that makes use of the new body. But that said it did take a while to get from the URSA 4.6k to the URSA pro G1 which brought the internal NDs etc. currently I’m not too concerned about the mount, as it is possible to adapt out to most things. Auto focus is a tricky one as other companies have years of R&D and now we have viable cost effective alternatives coming in the for of various LiDar systems… I’ll be surprised if Blackmagic go this route, unless they get collab with someone or acquisition.
