Q&A #20: Was Jesus a Rip-Off of Serapis?

Ancient Egypt and the Bible

Was Jesus Christ a rip-off of the Serapis myth? In this episode, we dive into the origins of the Serapis cult to discover how it started and if had any connection to early Christianity. And along the way, we will be talking about a whole lot of sacred cow.
Please note, that in order to get this out by Monday, I had to pull an all-nighter after doing a full day of work, so I was really tired. As such, I ended up pronouncing “Serapis” a dozen different ways, which may be annoying; however, I did the best I could with the limited amount of sleep.

A great rebuttal to the mythicists is a short text by a French theologian name Jean-Baptist’s Peres called “Grand Erratum”. It’s an ingenious text in which he satirically makes the case for Napoleon being a mythical figure similar to the archetypal Apollo, mirroring some claims of his contemporaries who held that Jesus was just a composite of other myths. In it he makes the case that Napoleon is just another instance of a “sun god”, his name being derived from that of Apollo, his mother’s name means “sunrise”, he was victorious in the south, but defeated in the north, and he was sent to live the rest of his life in the western seas…. among other things.

Dr. Falk, you mentioned another video in the beginning wherein you break down the distinction between claims of ‘plagiarizing’ and literary reference. I could not find that, could you share the name of that video please. My church has the opposite of this issue, oftentimes members and ministers are overly cautious of using ancient religious texts or philosophies in interpreting the Bible because of a fear of slipping into mythicism. A video detailing the distinction between them would be very helpful.

I Agree with the points you make. Most of the people that say "JeSuS WaS StOlen FrOm PaGaniSm, Ze1tGEIST and Acient AlieNz WUZRIGHT!!!!!!1111" are ignorant about Hellenism and what Alexander did (The he-goat in Daniel 8) or started because he died young. I do think that every ancient god is the same "guy" but is just an updated version of itself and more compatible with the culture cosmetically, and constantly evolving his attributes with syncretism (Paul had is debate with Stoic Philosophers in Acts 17). Baal/Zeus/Osiris/Moloch all had there "bull mode" and I do think that Aaron made the golden calf (or Cherub) by the gods that the Isrealites seen all those generations when being slaves in Egypt. It is know that under Ptolomy 1-2 Manetho was a priest of the Serapis cult and used Serapis as his patron god for political and religious goals. Ptolomy 1 was also worshipped as a god as he convinced the Egyptians that he was somehow related to Alexander after he stole Alexander's corpse on his way back to Macedon for burial. The Egyptians believed that Alexander was the son of Zeus-Amon (already a mixed god) after his visit at the Oracle of Siwa which gave the "right" for Ptolomy to become the first Greek Pharaoh. The book "The oriental cults in Roman Britain" by Eve Harris, they found statues of Serapis and Serpeum's, Serapis/Saturnus in Britain! along with other eastern deities such as Mithra (the bull slayer ;) I firmly believe that the roman catholic version of Jesus is an hellenized version of the real Jesus and paganized all the old gods and Christianised it. The Sacraments/eucharist etc are just the same ancient pagan rituals that Rome Christianised for their own agenda, including the priesthood and the whole papal structure. In ancient cults you had to do these "works" to maintain salvation or being initiated. In Attis cults they ate organs and drank blood to "have communion with Attis" just like the Eucharist, and baptism mentioned in your video. So yeah saying that Jesus is Serapis or some other solar deity is just nonsense! They all try to put down Jesus with these pagan gods, like the Psalmist says in: Psalm 62: 4 They only consult to cast him down from his excellency. Great video!!!!

Fantastic video. This kind of silliness is a real "boots on the ground" concern for me, because I often encounter young people (especially college students) who fall for the pseudo-intellectual folly of internet mythicists. Much of what I hear from people is just a recycling of arguments about mystery cults demolished a hundred years ago by (among others) J Gresham Machen in *The Origin of Paul's Religion*. But who (besides weirdos like me) are reading hundred year old apologetics books? So the same nonsense confuses another generation of students, and we have to present cogent demolitions of those arguments again. More than that, as scholarship advances, I appreciate the new information that you and other scholars can give. As we learn more about ancient religions and mystery cults, the distance between them and early Christianity is demonstrated to be wider, not narrower. Here's a quote from *The Origin of Paul's Religion* (1921), after discussing Serapis specifically, and then treating of Osiris more generally, and the purported "rising and dying god motif": "In the myth of Osiris also, there is nothing that could be called resurrection; after his passion [that is, death] the god becomes ruler, not over the living, but over the dead. In Lucian's description of the worship of Adonis at Byblos, there is perhaps as clear an account as is to be found anywhere of the celebration of the dying and resuscitation of a god, but even in this account there is not strictly speaking a resurrection. A tendency is found in certain recent writers to exaggerate enormously the prevalence and clarity of the pagan ideas about a dying and rising god." Thank you for pushing the discussion & examination of these matters forward in the 21st century. To skeptic & doubting friends and readers, I encourage you to seek to understand the actual Jewish and Christian doctrine of Resurrection more fully so you won't get sucked into transparently false arguments by self-assured fools. The Old Testament and intertestamental doctrine of the General Resurrection is the starting point for the specific Resurrection of Jesus. The earliest Christian creeds (the Old Roman Symbol, Apostles' Creed, etc.) say that Christians believe *both* that Jesus was raised *and* that we believe in the resurrection of the dead. If you haven't heard of the General Resurrection, you don't have the historical context to understand the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus. Beginning in the earliest Hebrew Bible texts, and taking clearer shape in the later ones, is the promise that God will be the victor over death forever. That victory is accomplished in the judgment and eradication of evil, the renewing of creation, and the resurrection of the dead - some to eternal life on the renewed earth, in bodies no longer subject to death and decay, in the presence of God; and some to eternal punishment away from His presence. The surprise for the earliest Jewish Christians was not that there was a Messiah or a resurrection, but that the promised future resurrection would be accomplished and guaranteed by the death and resurrection of the Messiah. This is literally the oldest and most consistent belief of Christianity. Anyone who thinks they find the root of the Christian belief in the resurrection of Jesus anywhere but in Jewish thought has misread history and should not be your guide for life decisions.

I really have to balance my time limitations with the kind of video content I can deliver. Now, if I were doing an academic paper or something for printed publication, that's different--then all the citations come out. But for RU-vid, I have to deal with the fact that I am essentially doing this with the few hours of free time available to me and it is just me doing it. In a sense, I am sacrificing the citations for the ability to be able to produce one of these every Monday.

@ancientegyptandthebible
@ancientegyptandthebible 2 года назад
Neither. I am a Christian, but I am also using "myth" in a different sense of the word in order to maintain parity of comparison. The word "myth" can be used in more than one sense like most words in English. Myth can mean "a fictional story," "an exaggeration of a past event," "a reception history of otherwise true events," and even "a presentation of archetypes." It really depends upon what one means by "myth," and I was using the word in that last sense. Something being myth is not automatically fiction or being untrue, unlike what many mythicists argue. Myths are the awe-inspiring stories that we tell. Some are true; some are fiction. The Illiad is a myth but it also contains elements that are true, e.g., the existence of Troy as a city. Jordan Peterson expresses it well when he said that in Jesus Christ the mythical and historical worlds touch. I would go further than Peterson by saying that, not only do they touch, but they full on collide.

@@camsanders5720 Are you by any chance meaning, Ka-Amun-Re? If so, that is not a trinity in any way. The Ka is the spirit of the king. And Amun-Re is a composite deity, essentially two deities that were merged into one. Egypt had nothing like a trinity. They had triumverates and triads (3 separate gods unified in purpose but not essence). But they also had diads, quadrads, and ogdoads (groups of 8). They did not have one god existing eternally as three persons--such a phenomenon never existed in Egypt.

If I wanted to cite Richard Carrier, I would have done a popcorn video. I received this "list of concerns" from a Christian who had been troubled by what he found. If you study ancient Egypt you will learn the same stories that are depicted in Biblical writing's came from Egypt in northeast Africa. They were written hundreds, if not a millennia before the Bible was written. These stories were stolen, copied and represented under another persuasion to control the masses. I learned most of this happened in the European invasion into Africa. The ancient Africans had it together so to speak. They knew most of these stories were myth, and not literal. Yes, some taught a good moral. I’ve also learned, and continue to, that they were ( mono- One God knowing ) not poly as what has been taught in the western world. True, they spoke of thunder god, rain god, etc. but when you said the one God they knew. Neither did they try to speak for God Almighty, as they had more of a respect for another persons spirituality, than to always try to delegate rules, regulations, or total control of another’s thinking. It seems they respected all to think for themselves, using the mind that God gave them. They ancient Africans were advanced in so many areas of life, not stupid, and unlearned like we were taught in Sunday school class.

> Instesd of a psuedo synopsis First, because there's no such thing as a "pseudo synopsis." It's either synopsis (a summary of findings) or it is not. > why not examine the ecumenical councils that entail the evolution of worship. Because the ecumenical councils play no part in the question at hand. You are deluding yourself if you think they do. > I see no scholarship in this guy's work only prefered observations Given that I am a recognized expert in the religion of ancient Egypt, it strikes me that you wouldn't recognize scholarship if you saw it. Frankly, the opinion of ignorant mythicists matters not to me. When even Bart Ehrman thinks your position is a joke, why should I esteem it more than he does? We don't cater to disenfranchised fundamentalists, whether that be atheist fundamentalists who are Johnny-come-lately mythicists or Christian fundamentalists who believe in the myths of Ron Wyatt. In my eyes, you are both the same.

Y would every Greek n Roman ruler front 320 bc to 431ad represent themselves as the vicar of serapis
@ancientegyptandthebible
@ancientegyptandthebible Месяц назад
Because it was what all the cool kids were doing? 🤡 But seriously... Serapis was the official royal cult of Egypt during the Ptolemys, so any ruler in Egypt starting with Ptolemy II was automatically high priest (hry-tp) of the Serapis cult. But then again, the king of Egypt was automatically high priest of EVERY cult in Egypt, so there was nothing special about the king being high priest of Serapis. Nevertheless, the term "vicar" is a Latin term. There could not have been any "vicars" in Egypt prior to the Romans conquest in 31 BC. But even so, there is no evidence that the title "vicar of Serapis" was ever used with the Serapis cult. That appears to be nothing but a modern-day myth.

Are we going to forget that serapis is a recreation of Horus the Egyptian mythology. It is just regurgitated twice over with Jesus! Serapis was literally created by the first Ptolemy King. He married his sister to look more Egyptian because she was already married into Egyptian nobility. So you're looking at the Greek version of Horus when you say serapis. And the Roman version of the Greek version is Jesus. Creating the Christ. Julius Caesar proclaiming himself the Christ. Using the Judean historian Titus Josephus Flavian. The first author of the canons of the Christ. The Caesar Christ Messiah. 70 AD fall of Judea. Look it up the book Caesar Christ Messiah. You're selectively cherry-picking revisionist history. To justify people's logical fallacies of belief today in where Christianity was plagiarized from.

@rahallmytee6487 > Are we going to forget that serapis is a recreation of Horus the Egyptian mythology. Yes, we are because Horus has nothing to do with the Serapis cult. You don't know your Egyptian myth very well. > It is just regurgitated twice over with Jesus! How so? > Serapis was literally created by the first Ptolemy King. Serapis existed long before the Ptolemies going all the way back to at least Amenhotep III. The Greek Serapis "face-lift" took place under Ptolemy II, not Ptolemy I. > He married his sister to look more Egyptian because she was already married into Egyptian nobility. How is Ptolemy II's marriage to Arsinoe II at all relevant? > So you're looking at the Greek version of Horus when you say serapis. Nonsense! What is your evidence for this? The name Serapis alone was derived from the composite form of Osiris-Apis. That should tell you the mythological origins of the cult. > And the Roman version of the Greek version is Jesus. Nonsense again. Where is your proof for this? > Julius Caesar proclaiming himself the Christ. Really? Got a source for that, buddy? > Using the Judean historian Titus Josephus Flavian. The first author of the canons of the Christ. The Caesar Christ Messiah. 70 AD fall of Judea. Look it up the book Caesar Christ Messiah. Are you talking about that book by Joseph Atwill? A book so crazy and unhinged that mythicists like Robert Price and Richard Carrier mock it? Are you serious? > You're selectively cherry-picking revisionist history. To justify people's logical fallacies of belief today in where Christianity was plagiarized from. I don't think I'm the one cherry-picking revisionist history. Just saying.

Ptolomy-1st was a Greek, who ruled Egypt after it was colonized. He wanted to be considered a 'son of god' (with a small 'g'), as the Pharoahs. The Egyptians refused, so he decided to kill them until Coptic Priests, under the threat of death, crowned him, 'Serapis Christus'. That is how the so-called Christian cult started. Later on, Arius of Lybia began to wake people up that they were idolizing and praying to a false-god, a man. That is when Emperor Constantine, who was a pagan, formed the Council of Nicea in 325 AD, where he setup a so-called pope; they created Jesus Christ out of Serapis Christus and a form of Christianity mixed with paganism that people worship to this day (with some adjustments). All theologians, priests, etc., who attended the Council were forced to go along with the BS under the threat of loosing their religious positions (poisons), being ostracized, etc. Arius of Lybia did not comply with the lie, was persecuted and later died mysteriously in 336 AD. Christianity was used to unify the Roman-Greek Empire, conquer and control the world. The so-called Jesus was described in their so-called bible of which was created by the same liars: hair like wool, skin burnt like copper, etc. Read the so-called bible. I am not an Atheist, etc., names that will be thrown at me. I do not be-lie-ve, especially in men who murder others in the name of or for their religion (synonymous for ignorance).

Point number 9. Serapis called themselves christians is probably true because the name comes from the name Serapis Christus (christian). The word christian for true believers was erroneously misplaced in the bible. The true worshippers of Jesus were either called messianics or simply folowers of the Messiah. Not christians. Perhaps the unbelievers were confusing the true believers of the Messiah to the pagan christians of Serapis Christus pagans. Just because believers are called christians in the bible doesn't make it true because the word Messianis or flowers of Jesus was substituted for christian when the bibles were translated. In the Book of Acts it says that it was in Antioch where followers of Jesus were first called Christians by the greeks living in Antioch. Again, in the true scriptures before it was changed it probably said Messianics. Not christians.

Regardless to who what and how people have been conditioned by Mens traditions and religions it all gets a concept and some ideals from the Egyptian or Kemetic Mesopotamian history... not saying that the Most high of The Bibilos not true or that yeshua- definitely not no damn Jesus isn't true. I believe yeshua existed but all of the jesus bullspit as well as the New Testament has the Greco-Roman omissions add and subtract and power that comes with who wins the war. Still today Christianity is what it is because of the pagan or SOCALLED pagans that raged war against all those who didn't abide by their Supremacy and commands. I know that's harsh but be real, get out your feelings first you speak of Christ as it's that was last name of someone or even Jesus as if one who walked the Earth name was that that's what a lot of this b******* gets mixed up when you so-called Scholars or researches don't accept damn truth. The word Christian comes from cretin so how in the hell did that get in the Bible by the same ones who won the war they put it there and care less because they knew Christian was a word pagans use for the worshippers of serapis and they were also Bishops of Christ not one apostilar disciple was every damn Christian I'm sorry they were not.. these Christians take a tradition and culture Israelite Hebrews Nazareth and so forth to become Christianity and little Christ Christian that's buls.... these people have always used religion to start War and to bring people together who they have enslaved or Taken laying statues names beliefs from their own establishment ruin people's culture and make it a religion based off the same concepts of doze they destroyed. It just manipulation y'all love to stay within those names and religions so that you don't have to deal with the truth.. Christ mithras serapis Christus and the list goes on and on but that's just a coincidence right and Jesus and Zeus the same damn word basically of course it's not just another coinkydink😂😂 One Love nothing more to say
