Mad Mike here; I was told some 25 years ago fly fishing is like playing golf you are always learning and you will never know enough to play the game right in some else's eyes, as always tight lines ;-}

Wow thank's Mad River Outfitters! I'm just getting started with flyfishing and of course I have troubles with "bad casting knots". Your videos helped me a lot to improve my fly casting skills! Thank you for the time and effort to show us the right technique! Greetings from Bosnia!

You will see this question asked in another of your videos. I asked about the knots, and the crack of the whip. Asked and answered. Thanks you. I was thinking "follow through" when you demonstrated relaxing the wrist a bit on the back cast. Follow through in the cast just like a golfer follows through in the swing, a hitter follows through after swinging a bat and as you said, a pitcher follows through in his/her pitch. Excellent video. Thanks.

This is fantastic advice. I am getting back into fly fishing after a 15 year hiatus and I noticed sometimes my cast would "crack" like a whip (too much aggressive acceleration combined with drifting forward I think) and also finding those "wind" knots which I knew had to be from poor technique. Going to practice this in the yard when I get home for sure!

I am new to fly fishing, just took my new fly rod out today for the first time and boom got one of those bad cast knots. 😔 But, I was able to untie it and I know I will need to replace the tippet, but my cast were starting to get better the more I practiced today, I could benefit from lessons

Excelente video.

what about using foam spiders or other leggy flies? is there a way to keep them from spinning and twisting or knotting the tippet section?
@Madriveroutfitters
@Madriveroutfitters 5 лет назад
Yes, use thicker tippet.

Wait! “Let your wrist relax a little” I have heard incessantly to lock your wrist and never bend it.. seriously confused
@Madriveroutfitters
@Madriveroutfitters 3 года назад
We’ll, that is horribly wrong info you have been incessantly hearing. Very simple.
@rudyruiz9521
@rudyruiz9521 3 года назад
I think for learning purposes at shorter distances like 30 ft. It is much easier to learn with a locked wrist. Otherwise, new casters tend to cast with thier wrist entirely. As long as you look at it like a stepping stone. I think it is best to learn that way. Once the cadence and feel is developed then I think adding the wrist is the next step. It is too much too fast for many.
