Em and Lloyd, The both of you have great passports (US & Canada + HK), and the fact that the both of you can plan so meticulously whilst maintaining financial stability is something commendable. If you ever have a kid in the future, the best gift you can give to him/her is your Canada + USA + HK passports. I know that the both of you said that staying in HK is the plan for now, but thinking about a different country will be great. Especially those with jus soli types of citizenships - so your kid will have unlimited access to the world. I am envious - but I wish the both of you the best.
Hi guys! Love the videos. Hopefully you get more comfortable in front of the camera and just talk casually. It can appear a bit stiff when you are too concerned with going over your sequences. But definitely love the channel
I think you should consider to start your own business if you quit LAW!! But I think you are too young to quit a law career as you are in early 30's??? I quit at 50 when I was multi-millionaire in US$. Now, I have 3 companies in China. GOOD LUCK to you!! Join a big company as a legal advisor?? You are too young to quit.
Thanks for these videos. Quitting big law (in 2001) was the best thing I ever did. Stigma that quitting meant I wasn't going to 'make it' unwarranted. Happier, thinner and more rested as a solo.
Thanks for making this Q&A video. I'm rooting for you both! Em's voice sounds just fine. Hope that you're feeling better. Bangs look good on you. I'm sure your kids will appreciate having two very good passports. Enjoy your break and family time.
Delighted for you on this adventure! I can resonate with similar backgrounds from Canada, California, and Hong Kong. I left my HK big law job (fancy magic circle relic) ~2009 financial crisis. However brief, the experience showed me I'd rather be in my first passion, computer engineering. Took some years to make it happen, first thru banking, but then eventually into business and product roles at big tech. Recently "FI / retired at 39"... figuring out the vision of this next decade. It's incredibly hard to dispel society's expectations and rewire your life. I find it helpful to listen to your gut over reason and be persistent. Wishful and excited for you guys!
What was your experience growing up in North America and then going to school/working in HK? Most people do the opposite (growing up in HK and study in the West) I grew up in HK and moved to Canada when I was 10. When I visit HK in my teens, I never thought I could go back to Asia. How was your experience going the opposite direction?
I appreciate this video learning more about you two. Really like you guys as a couple :) Will you guys consider making a video to talk about how you guys met, the ups and downs of your relationship, how you guys manage differences and conflicts, and thoughs/advice for other couples?
Thanks for the video! inspiring as always. 2 quick Qs from a junior working in US: 1, apart from lineage/family connection and tuition, is there any other reason you went to law school in HK instead of UK or US? 2, I understand you are taking a break from the legal industry, but how do you see the HK market going forward? Obviously there are short term benefits, such as the failed/censored US ipos doing listing on HKEX, but I am curious re whether the political climate is slowly but inevitbaly compromising the judicial system of HK in terms of credibility and clients' willingness to select HK courts, as well as HKIAR as their DR forum.
I definitely appreciate hearing this! I'm not in your industry but I am also exploring my options what I want to do when I am finished with graduate school and training :)
Let’s face it the biggest reason u guys can afford to quit is because u guys have plenty of options to not even stay in hk. Now once u quitted, why always refer urself as former lawyer in hk as though without that label u can’t speak as just being urself or u still want the high esteem of being a lawyer even though u are not entitled to it anymore kind of like dodomen always labelling themselves as former Apple engineer ? Have plenty of friends working in tech that consume lot of brain and hair guys and girls who don’t necessarily like the high intense pressure but work hard to support their family and they know if that’s what they need to endure to get what they want they have to do it. I only see two big babies whining
Enjoy your content and it's inspiring! No offence, I know it's not necessary to act & it's just my thought. I just think Em can smile more while talking because I initially think Em is a bit grim.
Thank you for asking! We don’t have any plans to do so for now - we’re just happy to see our channel growing and appreciate everyone coming by to watch our videos. Happy to hear that they are adding value! 🙏🏻
I’m not sure what to think about the trend of “quitting” a job in order to become a full time content creator. Yes, a full time job is strenuous. I’m a technical senior expert myself and can relate to the pressure, responsibility and working late hours. And of course, one’s own well-being should always be a priority. But to me, quitting a job for a more comfortable alternative sometimes feels a bit backboneless. What about sticking it out and growing instead of avoiding? Our society needs nurses, teachers, doctors, engineers, craftsmen, janitors,… Especially adolescents may be mislead by the trend of content creation as full time job.
I get where you're coming from but theres still a shit ton of people who pursue a traditional career. I don't think it's fair to want someone to stick something out for the sake of sticking it out. If it doesn't bring them any joy then they're just wasting their time, and for what? Aren't most of us working for a more comfortable life style anyways? Good for them that they're in a place where they can leave their traditional career and try something new out. They still have their degrees, they can go back to being lawyers whenever.
It depends on what one's definition of "comfortable" is - arguably, continuing to work as a lawyer (despite finding the career unsatisfying) could be the more "comfortable" choice given the stability and pay, and avoiding taking the risk of trying something new when one may not be feeling fulfilled with their work could also be a missed opportunity for growth and challenge. Agreed that society does need people to pursue important careers, although there was certainly no shortage of lawyers in Hong Kong - quite the opposite actually!
@@EmandLloyd I think this is an excellent point that some might miss without experiencing firsthand the growth or challenge that comes with content creation or entrepreneurship. Great video and I'm excited to see what the next year has in store for you two!
Kudos to you two..... Being born in HK, spent 10 yrs in Vancouver and end up in Toxic HK medical industry. I think the most important factor about quitting...... basically for any Asian family is the "parents". Since mine still demanded 100K HKD per month from me. I don't see how I would quit.
What is your citizenship? Are you planning on moving back to USA or Canada? Thanks for sharing your lives. I am also interested in law and health. This was a great discussion. TYVM.
It's great to see a self-fulfillment path being chosen. You can always return to law whenever you'd like so there's really no urgency. This whole situational epiphany is very interesting. I love this situation because I very much look forward to the positives both of you can create from being in creative mode. I say that because of the professional and intellectual background both of you have. This RU-vid channel is definitely helpful to many. I think both of you have the capacity to do even more and that potential is very exciting. I look forward to what both of you can produce on changing life for the better and in a positive note.
Thank you so much! The positive support towards our channel has been overwhelming, and it’s always great when we hear that our videos have been helpful to others. Thank you for watching and leaving us such thoughtful comments - it’s very much appreciated!
Truly appreciate you guys sharing your true stories ... But I think quitting a job is quite scary even if I know I can survive for 1 year without working...
Hi guys, good for you two found a mutual understanding and moving forward to the lifestyle you enjoy! I believe it's not an easy decision as you two are high educated with high paid jobs. Anyway, looking forward to hear more from you and best wishes 😇💓
Thank you! It definitely wasn’t an easy decision, but we certainly don’t regret it at all :) appreciate you stopping by and leaving such a thoughtful comment
Em has slimmed down a lot. Looks good though. Must be the weather! And, thanks for answering my question about you guys having kids. I think you've got all well planned and will raise wonderful children.
