Verticillium wilt is caused by a soil born fungus. Retired MSU Extension Horticulture Specialist Dr. Lelia Kelly says the fungus that causes verticillium wilt is very common in the soil, and some plants are more susceptible to it than others. The wilt is not catching, in other words it cannot spread from one plant to another like humans and the common cold.

@@FamilyPlotGarden Cool.The last couple of years my strawberry plants would grow great in the spring and early summer but would all be dead by sept.1. I finally theorized it must be v. wilt in the soil so this year I have them in pots off the ground.Hope it works.
