In the beginning my Thai GF asked to call me by a Nickname and I didnt think too much about it. But as I got to know her better I realized she asked because I have an R in both my first and last name. She doesn't know it but I think it's quite adorable when I hear her use L instead of R. We are kind of unintentionally developing a form of Pidgin language together. I suppose there is no reason to satop because we understand each other... no ploblem! 🤣😂😆
Khup khun Ka. I was adopted from Thailand by Swedish parents and I'm trying to learn Thai. Please, can you trace your parents origin by the help of their surnames please?
Interesting what you said about wai-ing back to certain people. I was told that if waiting staff or service staff etc wai you, you are not supposed to wai back and this is a Falang mistake
This was a very interesting and entertaining episode kruu Smuk. I noticed Thai people also have difficulty with some words ending in L or S sounds. Oil or house become oin or hou. Btw you have perfect teeth, I am jealous!
Exactly :) It's because Thai ending consonants sound different from English. FYI, -l ending consonant from the word 'oil' is -y sound. So Thais pronounce it oy instead of oil. Thai accent :p
Interchangeable "L" as "R" sounds can be confusing when listening to words/normal speed Thai conversation. Just have to remember in context. Still not clear on temple sticks/numbers, but interesting-some good questions/answers. Thanks Kru Smuk.
The ritual in the temple called siam-sii เซียมซี is a fortune teller. Many sticks with numbers are put in a glass. One will shake the glass until a stick fell out. On the stick, there is a unique number in which each number has different clue. If you got number 8, you will take a look at paper number 8. The paper number 8 has a unique meaning defining your future :) Hope it is more clear na ka
I have an update about my Thai girlfriend and her inability to say the letter R when she speaks words. Today I made Chicken Noodle Soup at my house in the USA. She told me that today in Thailand she and her sister in-law were about to eat Sapicy Lat. I said; Do you mean Rice... R-I-C-E? And she said; No, I mean Lat.... R-A-T. Oh!! ?? My Love is a Spicy Rat eater???? She said she was Solly and I told her not to worry about it. She's probably been Rats for most of her life? SE Asia may be coming out of the 3rd world but to me eating rat is in a way not trying very hard to leave 3rd world behind? A few people in the West eat Rabbit and Squirrel, maybe also Frog legs. But if in the end we are convincing ourselves that it just tastes like Chicken.... how about we just eat Chicken!!??
