On the "why do parties bother standing "paper candidates" who they know have no hope of winning and who they do no campaigning for" question: 1. Because there are some people who know perfectly well that they are not going to elect, say, a Green MP, but who still want to cast their vote that way and would feel let down and abandoned by their party if the party didn't stand. 2. Because the national vote for a given party does affect some things. E.g. Broadcasters give time and exposure to parties (in theory) in proportion to their share of the vote, so why would a party throw votes away by not standing, even when they know they won't win the seat?

On the speaker thing, the only reason there's the convention of not opposng them is that it's assumed that the speaker will remain speaker in the next parliament. They tend to be re-appointed, but we shouldn't accept this as a necessity. New parliament, new speaker. If it happens to be the same person, that should be seen as a mere coincidence. And once you accept that, there's no reason *not* to oppose the old speaker: they're running to be an MP, full stop. Maybe they'll turn out to be a "normal" MP, maybe they'll turn out to be the speaker, but that's no different to any other MP in the chamber!

One thing to remember for MPs addresses is they can be misleading. Friend of mine stood in Suffolk Coastal, was accused of never having set foot in the area. His parents house was there and he’d lived there from 8-18 when he went to Uni.

As a Chorley resident, yes there is a democratic deficit at election time, if you have a particular way you want to vote. However we do see Sir Linsey around the constituency and he does do constituency work. On the other hand he seemed to be the only MP holding Boris Johnson to account on certain occasions.

When I had turned 18 a general election was called and I had the choice between the Speaker and the Monster Raving Loony party I felt disenfranchised. I felt absolutely cheated. I never expect my one vote will swing my constituency but whoever I vote for I am making a statement that their policies and their conduct is closest to what I expect and hope for from an MP/party. When that is denied because of which road you live in that is blatantly unfair.

I live in a 'Tory safe seat' constituency where the race is between Tory and Lib Dem. There hasn't been so much as a leaflet through the door from the Tories but there's been a plethora of Lib Dem brochures and even a knock on the door from LD campaigners. Same thing happened for the local elections, the Lib Dem candidate won.

On the question of maintaining discipline in the event of a super majority, could this be the reason for Starmer’s purge of the left in the Labour Party? On the one hand, drifting to the right will give him that majority, and on the other will also reduce the risk of significant challenge and unrest once in office. Whilst ideologically uninspiring and seemingly not as much of a departure from the current government, it’s a strategy that could bring some much needed stability to the governing of the country.

I think a major cause of parties moving to the left or right following defeat is a result of the length of time in government. After Thatcher and Major the party moved right, after Blair Brown the party moved to the left, after Cameron-Sunak the party will move to the right. I think the right of the tories and left of labour (often aligned with the membership who rebuild the party) see the best chance of taking the party over is in the ashes of a defeat. Combined with the centrists in each party being tired of holding everything together in order to govern.

I did have a question, not sure if this had been covered but can parties form a coalition for opposition. Let's imagine that the Tories got 48 seats and the lib dem got 50, could the Tories enter a coalition with the DUP to form the opposition and get all the benefits ect (pmqs ect)

@@gerardmackay8909 two more quick questions, basically because I'm curious now. What happens if there is a tie, so let's imagine the Conservatives and Lib Dems both end up on 50 seats, who becomes the opposition. Also can the opposition change midway through the parliament. Let's imagine one for 51 and the other got 50, but two resigned to make it 49 and 50, would the leader of the opposition switch mid parliament
@angelicdespot2735
@angelicdespot2735 3 месяца назад
@@gerardmackay8909 I'm not sure that's correct. I'm a councillor in Chichester. We (LDs) took control from the Tories last year. The retained 5 seats. The Local Alliance (4) and Greens (2) formally became one political group, which enabled them to be the official opposition. I imagine the consequences of doing this would be more significant in parliament than a District Council though. Not that it will happen. We got badly burned and won't go into coalition with the Cons again!

Comment on local candidates living and being part of their constituency- in Eastbourne the current Conservative MP lives still and worked as a teacher here - the current Lib Dem candidate Josh Babarinde was schooled here and a local councillor too. In 2015 the Tories won the seat by 800 votes from prior Lib Dem incumbent who still lives here as well. A very community orientated seat for last 15 years.

Re the Speaker, in just uk elections, there’s a lot of seats that are foregone conclusions, and so the votes don’t count as much.
@quintuscrinis8032
@quintuscrinis8032 3 месяца назад
This may be true to an extent, but you can still choose to vote for another candidate to show that you want something else and it still contributes to the national vote counts for the party that didn't win your seat so it still makes a difference of sorts. Personally I agree that the speaker should be an honorific role that stays in parliament with a new election for the seat.

Views on the country being conservative are on the basis of our voting system. Referencing Labours biggest loss in 2019 is on the basis of our voting system, not the number of votes. These are disingenuous throw away comments like most of the media.
