Shayna, once I was bending over at a grocery store putting my groceries on the checkout belt, these 2 women started helping me and were kind of awkward. I thought it was so nice. Then I went to a full McDonald’s, bent down to put my grocery bags on the floor. Then I went home and went to the bathroom and realized I had completely bled through my beige shorts-a lot. The final insult to injury was when I brought my laundry to the laundromat I was given an invoice where I was charged extra and they wrote the reason why as BLOOD. This was 15+ years ago and I still think about it Lolol.

I live in Europe now, but when I was living at home in the US, many people judged my choice to move to Europe and make films. A lot of people seem to look at that life as a "pipe dream" and "useless" because there is this idea that "truly talented" artists don't need schooling and its all bs. I would have not learned half as much about film and filmmaking if I had not invested in my education. To treat art and creativity as a talent that does not need expansion with education is kind of... pretentious, in a way. Does that make sense? Anyways, love your channel!

I cant agree more on that part: When people move somewhere and hate it or talk bad about it. I mean I am sure they have a choice, they can simply leave. Instead of that they even spread negativity, which i really dislike. Nowhere is perfect.

hell no I don’t feel supported as an artist in the US! moving to Europe in January before starting grad school in the fall of next year over there and hope to be able to make the move for good because it’s just so damn hard to get funding and support in the US. instead of foundational support for the arts there are way too many “cash grab” competitions that pit artists against one another and make things unnecessarily cut throat. I didn’t realize how difficult things really were until I spent two years living abroad in Montreal and saw how different the situation was outside the country. in the US art is seen as a marketing tool / fetish, not as culture. it’s super depressing. you can tell a lot about a country that chooses to cut funding for arts and education first the moment things get tight (or not even? just to fund fucking useless wars?) anyways! there’s my two cents ~ I’m ready to GO ♥️ xox thanks for sharing as always, lovely!

(TMI but) I switched to the menstrual cup and reusable (machine washable) pads. Got my first cup in Paris 4 years ago (Lunette I believe is the brand, they have many sizes). So I was alone in Paris, using this for the first time and freaked out when I couldn't get it out for HOURS lol apparently you are supposed to relax and flex your "poo" muscles. I always signed my work with an initial and last name because I didn't want to identify my sex. It is a conscious cloaking device. Dearest Shayna, no offense, but I don't agree with 'women only' galleries or art shows. The mindset doesn't seem to be a valid solution, and I feel the same way about affirmative action. i can’t believe that i’m writing this from my apartment at Paris. I remember my young self watching your videos from my room in Mexico and just thinking “wow, that me in a few years” and i finally made it. Now i’m literally living my dream life and more, i live in the place that i dreamed at 15, i followed my passion and started to embrace my creativity and be PROUD of my art and i feel so happy and loved. this has not happened YET, i’m manifesting it, cause i know it my fking destiny and i know i’m gonna make it. i love ur videos so much, u are such a magical soul and u really motivate me so so so much and many ways It kinda weird sometimes because i feel like am seeing myself from the future lol. i feel like we share a lot of goals: i want to study arts, i’ve always wanted to make a yt channel, i want to write a poetry book inspired by Rupi and now also you! yes, patriarchy dominates in all aspects of society - and art is not an exception. so heartbreaking. yes, women/girls should collaborate more and lift each other up. it's a life-long process countering our internalized misogyny as a result of being born into and growing up in a patriarchal society.

but isn't it best to choose art based on its beauty and message than the color or gender of the artist? When I look at a Rembrandt I don't say "oh I'm not supposed to like this painting because he was male and white, as society has told me to selectively hate." I just think, "wow this is a beautiful painting." So, people can create problems in looking at statistics, but if we really want to move forward in society, we need to look at art as it's shown on the canvas and stop categorizing people into groups based on skin color and gender. We are all 100% human
The identity of an artist is very important though, it seeps through in their art. A white male artist who has practically had their career handed to them sees the world through a different lense than that of a female artist who struggles with misogyny in the art industry. When you’re looking at a painting, it’s not just a pretty picture, it shows the artist inner world, and that world is influenced by many things. Not to mention, in the video she gave statistics on how over 80 percent of the work shown in some galleries can be occupied by white males, doesn’t the work of others matter as well? Why is their art put in these hot shot galleries, it’s obviously not just because their paintings are pretty. I’m not trying to be rude btw, just offering a different perspective:)

So many people have learned some French in high school so they have some intro but you had none. I am in Paris this is my 2nd year and I have struggled learning french. my husband is French and we have always spoken english together since we met in nyc. anyway i am now obsessed with learning and you say what he says and anyone I ask for advice and that is to just speak, and make the mistakes. my husband speaks to me in french and is making an effort to really push me more. since i speak spanish i thought I would just pick it up but a not so much. thanks again your quite an amazing person!
I’m a writer living in the US and yes you do have to justify yourself and your work. I’ve heard people use the phrase “vanity degree” and “useless degree.” I’ve been thinking about moving abroad for a change in mindset and perspective. How serious you’re taken as an artist and a person directly corresponds with your yearly income here. It can be really draining.

Plssss don't group all European countries together like it's one culture! I live in a European country where artists are not respected nor funded much, and your experience ia nothing like mine. Just describe the US and French cultures because it's what you've experienced. Because i feel like the US already romanticizes Europe so much and it is not peachy everywhere here.
OMG, your embarrassing story happened EXACTLY to me! I was an exchange student in the UK at the time and had to have a friend go with me to a brand new GP to give me an exam. Needless to say, nothing was there and I wanted to crawl under a rock and just die of embarrassment. That didn't stop me from my partying days, though, hahahaha!
