Engineered Angler Lures

Here's another installment on Q&A from subscribers and Facebook friends. Here I go into the process that I use to be sure my resin cast lure is fully cured and the lure is ready for painting and clear coating. I also address some requests for me to use english units instead of metric....I kind of agree.

So we can all agree that metric is superior to imperial.

Great channel. Can you provide any tips on lip angles for crank baits?

Best video yet! Dang man you keep reading my mind, I needed a solution for getting paint to adhere better on my lures, thanks for what you do, and please keep em coming!

I would like an explanation about how the lip interacts with water. How deep cranks with the tow point in the middle of the lip dive deeper than a lure with a lip size as big as the surface from the end of the deep diver lip to the tow point. For example...

I'll be posting the first, of probably quite a few videos covering this topic, today. It's a very complex topic I'm trying to take bite-sized pieces.

Your lures turn out so well, I want to mirror your process. Which polycrylic do you use? Semi gloss, gloss, satin? Thanks
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 4 года назад
I've been using the gloss...but if you use it the way I do, as a sealer / mid-coat, I suppose satin will do just as well. Thank you for the positive feedback...

Hello, your channel is amazing 🙂. Do you use polycrilic varnish pure or diluted to soak the lure? A single dip is sufficient?
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 2 года назад
I use it without thinning it for dipping and I usually dip it twice.

What i have figured out with mine, is that they have residue from the release spray from the molds. I wasn't sanding them down before, except to smoothen where the mold join is. So now, i'm leaving them sit for a couple days to cure, then cleaning any flash, then doing a real thorough sanding, and then a wash. That is, this is what i have done with my latest batch. Haven't painted them yet. But, my previous batches, definitely the clear isn't working the same as it does on wood. Probably half have been fine, half need another coat.

Well I don't use any mold release on the silicon molds unless I using the clear resin for casting. The two part casting resin needs time to cure 7 to 10 usually will do it...you can do it all in the same day if you bake them...but that's my kind of crazy....

Do you use water base paint over the acrylic? Will automotive paint work over the poly!
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 5 лет назад
Yes you can use auto paint just make sure it is completely dry.

Can you use the polyacryllic to seal wood lures?
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 5 лет назад
I do....I dip them in un-thined polyacryllic two or three times let them dry

alumilite instructions recommend priming before full cure, anyone try that with any better results?
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 5 лет назад
I tried sealing early and I think it resulted in lures that the paint and clear sort of blistered, delaminated over the course of a couple of weeks....its always something.

Is there not perhaps some additive that could help reduce this layer of "oil" on the resin lure? Or something that you could dust or spray into the mould before casting? Thank you for the heads up on that though, most tutorials on RU-vid make resin look pretty easy, just cast and paint and there you go.
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 5 лет назад
Well it really is pretty easy to cast lures. And I do think that it's very dependent on the weather. I think colder drier climates make it a little easier. There's nothing you can really do to the mold, the problem comes from the natural process of the resin curing.

I’ve been using Alumilite resin and I’ve had a problem where there’s about a 1/4 inch layer on the bottom of the mold that doesn’t cure. I’ve tried mixing it very thoroughly and I’ve let it sit for plenty of time. Do you know what could be going wrong?
@whateverbitesminnesota9071
@whateverbitesminnesota9071 5 лет назад
Also what do you do so you don’t get air bubbles?
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 5 лет назад
Are you mixing by volume or weight...I would recomend using a gram scale and mix by weight. Also a comen mistake is to not scrape off the stuff on the mixing tool a couple of times while mixing. The stuff in the stick never really gets mixed unless you scrape it off and put it back into the cup and mix it in. If you let the stick foul your mix, it could cause a problem
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 5 лет назад
@@whateverbitesminnesota9071 Try not to mix too agressivelly and pour the resin in a thin stream...then cross your fingers.
@whateverbitesminnesota9071
@whateverbitesminnesota9071 5 лет назад
Engineered Angler I have been mixing by weight with a gram scale. I’m very confused on why it’s happening because it wasn’t happening before and I haven’t changed anything that I know of but now it’s almost every lure I pour. Do you think it could all be going to the bottom because it’s more dense before curing or because it’s the first stuff into the mold?
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 5 лет назад
@@whateverbitesminnesota9071 The location or when the resin leaves your mixing cup should have zero effect. The curing is a matter of chemical reaction so proper proportions, thorough mixing and reasonable temperatures is all you need. If you got all that...the resin could be bad.

instead of the heating process would it work to put many coats of primer to stop the epoxy coat from warping from the oils?
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 5 лет назад
I've tried using heavy high quality primer but what I find is that after a few weeks perfectly finished will become bubbly from the paint de- laminating.
