Check out the Stranger than Fiction series at: www.stfdocs.com. In this video, Muffie Meyer and Al Maysles discuss their film GREY GARDENS which screened during the STF 2011 Winter season.
I think that it was so sad little Edie never had a life never got married never had children her life was looking after her over powering mother. I watch the documentary with a happy heart but a sad one 2 That I never met this remarkable woman god bless you Edie hope your having a better time up there then you did down on earth bless you.
Even if she were crazy what would people want? Them happy and free together? Or one being put in a nursing home and the other a mental institution?! People need to think before they judge!
This was a great story....yet sad in many ways. I think these people used them. They should've went back & filmed once again. The women wanted their lives shown......so why did these files makers feel they may exploit them by some of the footage??
Who knows, it may have started out that way, but I truly believe that they all became friends & I am so glad we have this history of they two of them. So glad Jackie came & decided to help them. Nobody else was doing anything !
They were two women in survival mode...too prideful or fearful to ask for help. They were completely sane, trying to do the best they could do with what they had left.
But I also heard Little Edie say about making another film: Not for a million bucks - or not in a million years. Something like that. Besides, these two on the stage want to stress they did not exploit the two women, which, if we are honest, they did.
The family did not desert them. Many tried to help, the sons, they offered them a more easily manageable condo. They paid taxes on the property - and probably many other things. Jackie O and Onassis helped them. Onassis paid for the massive repairs of the house. He sent them packages with warm clothing, called them to hear how they were. Jackie sent them care packages, had clean towels, linen and groceries sent to them on a regular basis. The family did not abandon them.
These were simply two aristocratic women who weren't accustomed to doing anything for themselves. When the money went, the servants went. Very sad. The Maysles came just in time.
