I just want to thank you, for the knowledge you are giving. You really helped me to make my decision to have the gastric sleeve. I am off all my meds as well as diabetic meds. I feel like I have a new lease on life. Surgery wad 11/13/18. The info you are giving is stuff your doctor or surgeon does not have time to answer. So many thanks, your work is invaluable.

Thank you for doing these videos! I wish I lived closer so I could come see you. I love that you are invested in this process and not just a 'surgeon' like I see around NYS.

Absolutely thrilled to see this Q&A, Dr. Weiner! So glad to hear you're gearing up to release more information about healthy diet in the bariatric community. I'm tired of fighting the bacon- & cheese-obsessed low carb majority. I'm combining your approach with a plant-based diet in the long-term. (Are you familiar with Drs. Michael Greger, Neal Barnard, Garth Davis, etc.?) I'm three weeks post-op gastric bypass so I'm still in the experimental mushy food phase (eating lots of beans) but very much looking forward to veggies, fruit, and nuts along with a new lifestyle of walking, hiking, cycling, and swimming! Thanks again. You are really a lifeline for our community!

What types of adjustments would I need to make to your plan as a loop Duodenal Switch patient? (I had my surgery on May 1st and the practice recommends a Keto diet) thanks!

Not a lot of experience with the loop ds, stick with what your surgeon says

Is this eating plan also expectable for Mini Gastric Bypass patients?

I purchased your book prior to my sleeve surgery. I have maintained my weight 2.5 years until recently. I have gained 8 pounds. The Metabolic Reset food amounts are for non sleeved people. How much should we be eating of these foods? I am eating about 4 ounces per meal.

I started it. I am just winging it for now. I actually feel satisfied. I hope the scale agrees with it! Starting the smoothies in the morning.

Do you support removing the gallbladder during sleeve surgery if it is needed?
@apoundofcure
@apoundofcure 6 лет назад
Only if it is really needed, my preference is to do it in two separate surgeries.

Thank you so much for your videos - they have been a real voice of reason in a sea of mis-information. I was sleeved on January 29, 2018 age 60, 5' 7", SW 235, BMI 37. Current weight is 163 and I am delighted with my weight loss. Do you think one of the reasons I've done well is that I have experienced hunger since my second month post surgery? What I mean is that I haven't had a 'honeymoon' period where I have no appetite but have had to learn how to eat well very early on. I'm hungry (yes, I do wish it was head hunger but it isn't) every two hours or so and I eat nutrient dense food basically all day. It was terribly dispiriting to experience hunger so early on but I'm thinking maybe it's a gift now in a perverse way because I've had to face reality so quickly. I lose about 6 ounces a day and this is perfect for me. I'm pretty curious about why I'm in the minority who this happens to and wonder if in future, I might end up being 'not hungry'. Does this happen to any/many of your patients? Thank you again for being so sensible and inspiring at the same time.

The most influential factor in your weight loss success so far is your genetics, the most important factor for your long term success will be your lifestyle

Any way you can discuss my issue about being hungry? I know I'm in the minority and I wonder how many of your VSG patients experience this. Thanks so much.

Susan Crawford I had bypass and feel like I've experienced hunger even while still in the hospital. My start BMI was 38 and I'm 56. I wonder if those stats have something to do with it. I don't think we are suddenly go thru a stage of no hunger. I joined a FB group for low BMI patients and that has helped me feel like I fit in. Your starting BMI does make a difference. :)
@susancrawford2897
@susancrawford2897 6 лет назад
Thanks for your reply Grace. Maybe that's true, that a BMI under 40 has something to do with it, plus the age thing. But I do wonder if it's the dirty little secret of the sleeve: that there is more hunger than people think. I thought I'd done all my research and was prepared for anything, but I was NOT prepared for hunger. Everything I read or watched went on and on about how this is one of the benefits of WLS - hugely reduced hunger for at least the first year - 18 months due to the reduction in ghrelin. I wish I had been more aware. I've accepted it now and I continue to lose weight which is great but that no-hunger-honeymoon would have been nice:)
@gracefugate3184
@gracefugate3184 6 лет назад
Susan Crawford I think the honeymoon time refers more to our restrictions. With time we have less and less restrictions to the point where you can get to where you can eat as you did before surgery just not as much. Today is a great example of hunger for me. I want to eat and swear I feel hungry yet my stomach feels full. I just hate that. I sometimes wonder if it's not just my body asking for fluids and my mind thinking it's asking for food. :(

You keep saying veggies, beans, seeds and nuts. I love all those foods but I'm a chicken/turkey/pork eater. Just had to put that meat out there. You said you've gone from recommending 1 to 2 oz of nuts to not limiting nuts. What about the # of calories and fat. I love nuts and although I can't eat a lot in one sitting, I could eat a lot in one day. I'm much more disciplined after bypass but I'm aware that the honeymoon phase doesn't last forever and that I could regain and like every other WLS patient, that terrifies me. Also at my last post op appt (6 month) I was told I wasn't eating enough (that was a 1st), 650 to 700ish at the time. I'm getting over 800 and have even gotten to a 1000 but sometimes (not all the time) I feel like I'm force feeding myself. Nuts were recommended but I'm just afraid of the fat content. Sooooo/???
@jenaa110
@jenaa110 6 лет назад
Try eating 1/4 cup of nuts per day. Perhaps use it for your protein for a meal or snack. I add cashews to a little stir fry with a little chicken but you can do just veggies. Dark meat is softer than white meat depending what stage your in.

Lots of old school thinking with calories and animal protein over plant protein. I'm sure this came from your bariatric program, but there's a better way: www.poundofcureweightloss.com
