Placement and room treatment are the biggest challenges to getting ANY speakers to give you a better performance…however,you’re going to probably need (want) a sub… Then if you’re going the high end route..Wilson and their custom set up ..work with the client’s living space (with minimal treatment) ..but you’re paying for it. Bookshelf speakers are generally better for imaging and soundstage…but they bring their own issues …not to forget ..the speakers should have a stand that places the tweeter at the listener positions ear level.
In my opinion and having electrostatic speakers, definitively needs a subwoofer. I have an old pair of Acoustat and they sound superb but with a powered 10" sub, it really makes overall sound much better 😊
