I always wondered where our Philly string bands got all of those banjo players. The last time I went "up the street" was with the Hammond Comic Brigade in the early fifties. Once the hired bands, normally on playing from truck beds, kicked into "Oh Dem Golden Slippers", you strutted your way "up the street" all the way to Broad and Girard Ave. Then you walked down to Second Street and danced your way to Mt. Carmel Church. Any old time Mummers remember those days?
What an awesome tradition ! I live in Maryland and have been drumming in pipe bands for twenty five years. I only wish I lived closer to Philadelphia as I would LOVE to be in a Mummer’s band ! 🎆🎇🎉🎊🎈🎶🎵🥁🪕🪗🎷🎼
