Thanks Mark. Yes, those new tool holders wont all be occupied right away, some some room to expand. I got quite a few extra tool holders because they were less than 1/3 of the price compared to getting them locally.
Never liked arranging tools, tapers, drills etc onto steel holders, particularly the tapers, the steel support marks them. I started using HDPE sheet with taper holes for anything with a taper. We did a big sheet for taper twist drills from 13mm to 50mm in 1mm increments for the radial arm drill at one place I worked at, looked fatastic and provided the full support needed.
I have a 14 inch Clausing lathe that I rebuilt, it did not have s splash pan so I made one and bent the top to accommodate my tooling , I really like it!
Very nice. Will add that to my project list. Hey I'm fairly new to at home machining (yacht maintenance mainly), and one thing I am really struggling to nail is where in NZ to get small quantities of stock. Specifically 6061 ally bar, 316 stainless and Acetal or Delrin. Got any tips in that department?
I have never brought ally, stainless or acetal/delrin so I don't not know where to source them from. I cast my own aluminum and that is all I use on my projects. All the stainless I have has been given to me. I have no idea of the grade though. I don't think I have turned acetal or delrin, but I did make some turning blanks out of HDPE by melting it down and squashing it up in a mold. I have a video on that process. Probably no helpful but that is my experience.
Nice job Jon, I have never looked back since I made mine a year or so ago, far better than having stuff kicking around in the chip tray and up on the headstock. Cheers, Jon🏴
I still have stuff kicking around in the chip tray and on the headstock. But, I should be able to move that over to the shelf where the tool holders were now. Thanks for watching.
Funny, we just made one similarly made of aluminum angle though. Didn’t want steel angle beating up the tool holders. Our Makerspace is hell on some things.
That's a solid build. Thank you for sharing. One note: The buzzing in the audio is tough on us headphone wearers. Most video editors have an audio filter that can clean that up, at least a bit.
No problem. Thanks for mentioning the buzzing. I did not know it was there when I was making the video. It is hard to hear on my PC through the speakers. But, I do notice that it is more pronounced when watching the video on my phone. May be it is the tinny speakers on the phone? Anyway, I will see if it comes on the next video and I will try to filter it out.
Great Idea and well made, I might steal it 😁 My offering this week, (Out on Friday) gives a shout-out to you for providing the inspiration to have a crack at something you made, plus part 2 the week after will contain a snippet from your video from when you made yours. But Shhhhh don't tell anyone. 👍
@@thehobbymachinistnz Yeap, I will keep you in suspense, but I will say it was something you made a year ago, it's taken me until now to have the confidence in my Lathe and Mill to have a crack at it.👍
Awesome video and great idea :) Do you have a preferred supplier in NZ for your QCTP holders or go offshore? Also watching this just makes me want to bitch about my imperial turret lathe an how painful it is to do anything on especially when i see other peoples setups lol (serves me right for not asking for advise in the beginning and only thinking about grunt)
Thanks you. Is the issue the turret? If so, can you replace it with a QCTP? Maybe that is an option? I sourced these holders from Aliexpress. They were $40 each including tax and shipping. Locally, Chevepac sell them for $135 each including tax.
@@thehobbymachinistnz Thanks for store info and appreciate the reply :) The turret lathe (ward no7) was designed for threading/pipe work and has stainless steel bed covers. If you look it up will see quickly how it has lots of grunt but is quite limiting at times for most engineering work (even compared to its smaller counterparts) I will upgrade one day, but its for my hobby so i am sure your aware the NZ market seems to be full of people asking big dollars for machines or most things that aren't always worth it (As multiple older engineers said to me if your selling old equipment its only worth scrap price as that's were it goes to die an its the tooling that is worth paying the money for)
