This video explains how to create a layer in QGIS 3.2 and Create points within the layer.
What's up guys recently I have looked into the analytics of the channel, and noticed that the channel is shrinking. We have to get some likes on these videos. Subscriptions are good too, but the likes tell RU-vid that this content has value. So I would love to get at least 100 likes per video. Most of the videos get a lot of views, but only a few likes. If you guys could help me out that would be great. I definitely have more content, but need to see some free action on your part to keep the channel alive and show RU-vid and me that you like this content. Thanks so much for you that already hit the like button, and keep up the good work.

For unknown reasons it took me some time to find this channel. Very strange that there are so few views. Amazing clear teaching and with the short episodes on small subjects, no one can say "I had not time" to learn more about QGIS. Maybe most that start with QGIS are not really after learning the application, they want to dig directly into their specific target creating some map from a few input sources. They search for QGIS tutorials that do exactly what they want to do, nothing more. I'm just at episode #7 but so far I find it amazing how clear and easy to follow these QGIS Basics episodes are, big thanks!!! :)

This is a very clever way to start teaching a GIS. Also, I appreciate how you are using the terms (e.g. "attributes") consistently and relating them explicitly to the layout of the table. Now I won't confuse fields and attributes anymore (I hope). Anyway, thanks for posting this. EDIT: Thanks to this video, I discovered that the scratch layer for point data works as an input for VECTOR\ANALYSIS TOOLS\MEAN COORDINATES (for the mean center), VECTOR\ANALYSIS TOOLS\NEAREST NEIGHBOR ANALYSIS, and the Standard Deviation Ellipse plugin. I suspect this means I can use a scratch layer for point geometry with other spatial statistics operations as well. I am teaching a spatial statistics course, and I think this could be a fun way to augment my teaching. Currently, we use a whiteboard and spreadsheet before we move on to 'real' data in QGIS (3.10). However, reproducing the sketches we draw in class (to show the positions of point data) onto QGIS as a scratch file might help my students develop a better intuition about spatial randomness and the like. Having an additional layer showing a grid would make it easier to place the points so that their distances and relative positions remain unchanged. It might also help my students develop a better feel for the software because they could literally draw their own map without even having to digitize or transfer data from a GPS. While I am able to insert a grid using VECTOR\RESEARCH TOOLS\CREATE GRID, I am having a difficult time converting the distances over to meters. Do you have a suggestion for a projection or coordinate system that would do this? WGS 84 appears to measure distances in degrees. Optimally, I could set the grid to run from 0 to 10 in the X- and Y-dimensions, and the distances would be scaled to something more intuitive.
@HalHartQGIS

That sounds like an amazing idea to teach spatial statistics. Also you are correct about the scratch layers, Really the biggest difference between scratch layers and actual shape file layers is in the way they are saved and the amount of space they take up. Scratch layers hold only enough space to be temporarily recalled where as Shapefile layers have a designated memory location on the host computer or server. Also you can add a grid to the canvas with decorations or add a grid of points in which you can specify the horizontal and vertical extents.

Yes so I have covered transforming the CRS, so that your CRS changes to whatever you want. This is one of the Vids: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZY_WdkCVvwI.html

@@HalHartQGIS Thank you! This problem (mismatched coordinates) drove me crazy in ArcGIS, too, but for that program I eventually documented the procedure so I could find the instructions when I needed them. Now I am re-learning the wheel, if I can mix my metaphors.

Hei bro, i usually use arcgis, but for some reason i move to qgis for mapping subject. So i still confuse with some of function or app interface hahah. My question is if we have some x y coordinate so how can i make point (shp) based on my coordinate data? In arcgis usually i click right button mouse and choose input xy data. Thanks for ur attention

How can I convert a temporary layer into a permanent one? Or how can I create a permanent layer in the first place?
@HalHartQGIS
@HalHartQGIS 4 года назад
Hello so when you go to your Data management toolbar it gives you several options for creating different types of layers. 1. If you want to create a temporary scratch layer and then save it. All you need to do is right click on your scratch layer. An options menu will pop up. Look for the option that reads "Make Permanent". When you click this it will bring up a dialog box. The box will have "save vector as" at the top. It will allow you to choose the format which if you are working with regular vector layer will default to 'ESRI Shapfile". Then the text box right right below is where you enter your pathway. You can manually type it in or click the button at the end of the box to bring up your file explorer. From there you can create or find a location to save your file on your computer or wherever you want. It will also has an option that is "SHPT" that will allow you to choose the type of geometry the file should be. You can also add custom options , but that is optional. 2. If you want to just start by creating file go to your Data management toolbar and choose the option create "shape file layer" instead of "temporary scratch file". The dialog box will look a little different and will read "New Shapfile Layer at the top. In this box You will enter file pathway or press the button at the end of the text box. Once you have selected file pathway, select the Geometry type you want it to be. You will also be able to add fields fr your attribute table if you want but it is optional and can be done later after creation. After doing all that you hit the "OK" button and it will create your file and the pathway to so any time you try opening a project with that file connect the project it can be found and you want have to go looking for it. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. If you have any more questions please let me know.

Hi Hal thanks for this video . How can someone create automatically a set of equidistant and oriented (e.g. with an azimuth of 45degree)lines?. similarly with points how can I create automatically a grid of equidistant sampling points on oblique intersection lines?.
@HalHartQGIS
@HalHartQGIS 3 года назад
Since you are dealing with lines you need to have two points that will be the beginning and end. So x1 y1 to x2 y2. You could add more if you wanted with shapetool digitizing lines. There is no way to automatically digitize the lines you with those point and a start and end field giving the beginnings and ends of each line. This is the fastest way to make equidistant is to first have equidistant parallel points.
@HalHartQGIS
@HalHartQGIS 3 года назад
With points you can create a grid of equidistant points with the process that you follow with lines. I have videos on both of these processes that I will send you shortly.

Thanks Hal, I found your video very useful and your style was very pleasant, which made learning fun (not really "Funtime" but not bad at all...). I'll add one comment which is purely constructive - to add to your teaching approach, I know you said you're putting them up quickly (which is good - the work gets done and thats 90% of it), but any additional plannning you can do - for instance how the handle the trickier parts of it, will pay off exponentially, if that makes any sense. (And that's probably all just BS, ignore it and keep up the good work!). PS This guy (I'm sure you know of him) should provide you with plenty of didactical techniques ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aLmMovuydqI.html
