how would i do this if my areas aren't buffers (which have constant area of 77.25) but are instead from another layer and therefore don't have a constant area?
This looks very long winded. I can do the same thing in Mapinfo with one process and have the value in a column. Sorry if I missed something but I stopped a 4m as I need to get a quick method of this and I will need to move into mapinfo if it is this hard in Q.
Valid point, however, Of course, there are many ways to solve any data-centric problem, even SQL in PostGIS would achieve the task in one query, just site another open-source solution.........
