is this man Chinese or Vietnamese, or a combination of both? I've never heard of Chinese person with the name "Ngo" before.

Haha... I am a Singaporean of Chinese ethnicity. Back in the days (70s), our registered names at birth were romanized based on our dialects. And since most of the population were not English educated, the registration of the romanized names was mostly left up to the registering nurse's discretion . My Chinese surname is 'Wu'(吴), The correct romanization based on my Hockien dialect group should be 'Goh'. But as I mentioned earlier, the registration is left up to the nurses interpretation and discretion. So in my family alone, we have at least 3 or 4 different romanized surnames, from Goh, to Ngo, to Ngoh... It's not uncommon for those of us born in that era. Hope that explains it. ;)

@@ThatChineseHistoryGuy I suspected that there was a story behind your name. I'm a white American, but I have a Chinese name too, it's 宋金桥. I picked it up when I was living in China as an English teacher. It's meant to sound somewhat like my English name in Chinese word order - Zorn Jim George. It also shows my appreciation for the Song dynasty.

@@jimzorn3853 Very nice!! What I find particularly fitting is the name 金桥, literally translates to 'Golden Bridge', that would signify the priceless connection between the cultures you come from, and the one you immersed yourself into. Very meaningful indeed! :) :) :) BTW, Zorn is not a very common English name either, is it?

@@ThatChineseHistoryGuy Yes, you could indeed say that it was like that, I did try to serve as a bridge between the two cultures. As for my last name, Zorn, it's actually German, not English. I think that it means something like "anger" or "scorn" in German. And while I must have had some angry ancestors, it's very rare for me to become angry myself. And what about yourself, besides producing videos, are you an author or a professor?

@@jimzorn3853 Ahh... German origins... That'll explain it! Seems like this channel has got some very interesting 'connections' with Germans. It was a German friend of mine living here that 'nagged' me into starting this channel... LOL No, I'm NOWHERE near being an academic, much less a professor of ANY kind... I was enrolled in teaching school MANY YEARS AGO to train as a Chinese teacher, but left because I couldn't stand the bureaucracy. I then got into copywriting and other assorted forms of commercial writing, but suffered a burnout after a few years. Running this channel now is my FULL-TIME (unpaid) job. I'm currently compiling the stories I tell here into books to be published. The first one should HOPEFULLY be released as an eBook on Amazon by the end of this quarter.

Regarding him deciding not to give up the throne to a worthy successor despite earlier promises: "Power corrupts. Absolute power absolutely corrupts". You say China evolved into a society of slave owners. Did they abolish slavery at any point before the modern age? -

Technically, official 'Slavery' was abolished waaaay before the modern age, HOWEVER, the system of indentured servants and the system of feudal landlords and serfs on the land never really stopped until very recently in the early20th century.
