Fun fact - there's a green, plastic net a bit like an inverted umbrella that's fitted to coconut palms to catch the coconuts, and direct them to a kind of funnel that can be opened to release them. It's an Aussie invention called the Coconet.
FUN FACT: When I was completing the in-school portion of my chef training, we made ice cream in class and it happened to be pistachio. Chef added a few drops of green food colouring to the ice cream base and someone asked the very same question. He replied that food colouring is quite often an important additive to the 'psychology' of food: meaning that surveys show that with the addition of colour, people actually believe that the flavour is much stronger than non-coloured food.
Not all acorns taste terrible. Most of the European species produce bitter nuts, but even then, some trees have a mutation that means their nuts have less tannin. Some of the oaks native to the Americas used to be prized for their tasty and nutritious acorns. But for whatever reason, we think of them all as squirrel food.
