The man holding the trophy is Arsene Wenger, former manager of Alan's favourite football club - Arsenal (so called because the club was founded by workers from the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich). The trophy is the Premier League trophy (England's football equivalent to the Superbowl) which Arsenal last won in 2004.

Alan Davis is an actor who was famous for starring in a murder mystery series in which he plays a magician that solves crimes. Very 90s and it is called Jonathan Creek. Was a big hit in the uk at the time.

I re-watched Jonathan Creek just a month or so ago. Still holds up, I mean the era was evident but still a good watch.

A great example of editing being so pivotal is The Crow. Due to the death of Brandon Lee during filming they didn't have an entire story to piece together. While almost all the filming had been done there were several days of filming left to do, and this was apparently mostly close ups, dialogue and retakes. There was a lot of content they had to simply invent from nothing, by either using pioneering CGI, stunt doubles, or reusing other moments from filming and swapping it in for the intended scene. They did an incredible job under terrible circumstances and the way it's pieced together is almost seamless. They allegedly worked 24 hours a day for months to get a finished movie together. There are a few moments scattered throughout the film where you can tell they've had to use a little trickery, but the way they achieved it is still cohesive and actually adds more weight to the movie. One of the most notable is when Brandon Lee sees kids in Halloween costumes running past and there's a slow motion shot of him laughing before fading to black. It was clearly spliced together, but it felt like the editors intentionally slowed down that moment as a kind of memorial. The audience definitely felt that. Without that editing the film wouldn't exist as a classic.

Rock and roll was, before being stolen by the music industry, a slang term for having sex.

It was a term used for centuries to describe the motion of a ship at sea, the 'rhythm' if you prefer, before being used (not stolen) by a very small minority of people as a slang term for having sex.

Back in the early 2000's a Writer, who had created three books, was paid £11,000,000 for the Film rights. The Films were never made. Fortunately she became a Patron of a "charity" Trust I volunteered for, so we were able to do a lot of things. (I put charity in quotes, because it was always a non-profit company and never became a true Charity, too much paperwork)

Most films are a collaboration of many talents and actors are just a part .Nowadays there is also a residual market but it is staggering how much people in the entertainment and other sport amusement fields are paid compared to everyone else . Back to the subject , it is odd but when you think about it true , the audience does do most of the work .

I remember this... found it fascinating. I've always said the difference between a competent actor and a great one is simply the script, i.e. there are no "great" actors, only great scripts. A good actor cannot rescue a bad script. But of course they get the big bucks and the awards because they sell the movie. Has Jodi had her hair done? It looks nice.

Alan Davis had his own show long ago, called Jonathan Creek, based on a magician that solved murders. Am I crazy or did the US have a show similar to that in the 70's with the guy who played Bruce Banner (Incredible hulk alter ego)?

Personally I think actors should be paid based upon Either: • A flat rate for time on the project including training, preparation and post project promotion OR • A cut of the profits or losses as a percentage of the gross gate...

Hi Nick & Jodi, although, I generally dislike the extreme wages that some Actors/Actresses make on some films. I cannot do so were they have believed in their project/work ethic & taken a % of the profits instead. In that case, they deserve more than usual to reap the rewards. Obviously, as you said when they are at their peak they can push for more. Given that none of them can be sure how long it will last, a bit like athletes or football players, it also makes it harder to object to it. However, in all those cases I would much rather, they received a reasonable proportion of said wages directly while the balance was placed in a secure account until those careers were over. Top flight football players are a good example, there have been several over the decades, who sadly ended up in dire straights. Partly because of their own foolish spend, spend, spend philosophy or because they fell pray to the sharks, who knew how much money they were getting. Generally speaking, it obviously should be up to the individual, however these young people who earn life changing amounts suddenly, would be better served by this system, IMO. Georgie Best was the first such football player that I saw this happen to, he was in effect the first Superstar player in the U.K., Man. Utd tried to help him but clubs at that time had no system to cope with such events.

Quite Interesting that Sandi was on this one as when she took over she was pretty vocal publicly that she wasn't being paid the same as Stephen was.

She must have signed a contract, so she agreed to the amount she was being paid. She was paid what she was willing to accept, if she thought she was worth more she should have said so.

@@4Kandlez she found out after that she was being paid less, so she started talking about how women are already paid less than men for doing exactly the same job. It ties in with this reaction as contract or not actresses are paid less even in the lead role....Still getting a shit load of money though.

Patrick Warburton (Puddy on Seinfeld) is a master of staring into the middle distance. All men possess this skill. Women ask, "What are you thinking?" We say "nothing" and they don't believe us.

I never chose a film based upon who was in it. Just because they made a good film does not mean the next one isn't atrocious. I've always sought knowledge of the film, a review, feedback from multiple sources, these days internet reviewers. I don't watch films I have no idea of their content unless I'm filling time and it's effectively worthless. Even then if I have no idea I won't give it more than a few minutes to capture my interest.

It's not just actors it's entertainment artists sports personalities like boxers, soccer players. It's big business and fees reflect return on investment. Two examples Sir Alec Guinness (Obi One Kenobi) in Star Wars. His agent asked for an increase in his fee. Representatives of George Lucas countered with 1% of the gross earnings they settled on 1.5% The film grossed millions at the box office and the 1.5% they agreed was TEN times what he asked for! Soccer on the UK Let's consider a father and 2 children going to see a game at a Premier League Club like Manchester United playing at their home ground. Adult tickets are $169 Children (under 16) $117 that's $403 for tickets to get in add another $150 for transport a burger or hot snack and a drink each at half time that's just over $500 during the season they play a home game every 2 or 3 weeks!

Comment on this comment Who is amongst your top 10 actors Ben Kingsley... amazing. Then I saw a film where he was playing a terrorist. He was just a tiny bit off, and I was really disappointed. Later we found out, he wasn't a terrorist, he was a mediocre actor, paid to pretend to be a terrorist. When the forces caught up with him, he played the 2nd rate actor amazingly. WHAT A GENIUS ❤ from Northeast England ❤️

A movie makes $500 million. The money is there. How much of that is due to the name or performance of the actor? That's how much he or she should get paid.

Unfortunately actors or writers who agree to a percentage of the profits often run afoul of 'Hollywood Accounting'. They'll be told by producers 'well, sure, the movie made a billion dollars, but after marketing and catering and the cost of a massive yacht which we've decided to keep, we actually didn't earn a cent. In fact, you owe us money.'

Actors/actresses are grossly overpaid, Alan hit the nail on the head, distribution of wealth, yes these people have skills and they deserve a large pay cheque, but the money a movie makes needs to be distributed better. There is no logical reason one person should get paid 50mil for a role, it's gross. It sticks these people on pedestals they don't deserve.

So it's cos they convey the emotions of the actual movie?
@carlgibson285
@carlgibson285 3 месяца назад
No, it's the opposite. Most of the time the actors are conveying no specific emotion at all, but the audience projects emotions onto the performance based on the context of the scene. This isn't always true of course since there are definitely scenes that require actors to convey specific emotions, but most of the time the emotion comes from the dialogue, the music, the way the scene was shot and the editing, not from the actors themselves.
