@@Wonderduck1 Hey, don't get me wrong, as ridiculous as it may look to a fellow rigger or lighting technician, hanging as many fixtures as psychically possible on a big ass flown truss structure can be an absolute nightmare designing, programming, setting up and striking, but if a team can pull it off and utilize all of it efficiently in the effort of effectively giving the most unforgettable visual effects display the audience has ever seen... not only is that NOT a bad thing but it's incredibly impressive.

@AB How difficult was it to get the pyrotechnics certification?

@@marcschumacher18205 day course (3 day theory, 2 day practical) -cost $2K. Very easy to pass I then had to apply to a state government office for the licence which involved a criminal background check a few hundred dollars there. This took about 30- 45 days. Annual liability insurance on top of that.another $500 I then went and purchased some basic equipment ie Cobra wireless electronic firing systems $500 and some Fireworks show software $1000 ie it simulates your show on a laptop so you can add your music, fireworks product etc to see how it's going to look. What some fireworks operators that are just starting out is to get their basic course and then operate under an established firework company that already has firing hardware, show software, licenses and insurance. This way they get some experience up and can do basic shows. Once they get experience and time, then they can apply for their license. Most government offices stipulate that operators must have their license for a few years before they can move up to firing the bigger shells ie 6 inch, 8 inch etc. As you can imagine, the bigger mortar shells require larger safety distances away from the viewing public. You get to a point of diminishing returns ie there's no point firing 9 inch shells if the viewing public are that far away that they lose some of the "bang" factor. Part of the fireworks experience is feeling the sound hit you. This "sweet spot" is felt using 3, 4 and 5 inch shells. I've let off large 20 inch shells, but this was at a ski resort and it had to be let off on top of a mountain, and we'll away from the resort. It was great being part of the crew underneath it, but the wow factor wasn't as cool as a typical country fair where you set up on a showground and the public is only a few hundred feet away. Something to remember. Setting up a Fireworks show involves "a lot of iceberg and small tip" ie most shows rarely go over 15 minutes but to do this involves many hours of setting up. Typical New Years Eve shows take weeks of planning, days of rigging and just as many hours disassembling and cleaning. You'd be hard pressed finding a Fireworks crew that are in bed before 2am after a New Years Eve show. Also involving water barges, or any fancy Fireworks show adds to the logisticical complexity. Of course, being at "ground zero" watching a well planned, pryomusical go off above you and hearing the cheers of the crowd in the distance is one of the many experiences I'll take to the grave. @@marcschumacher1820 I guess each state or territory has its own licensing criteria. A quick Google search should sort you out. I've found it can be a small professional community where most of the senior pyros that have been in the business for 20 years or so, all know each other. Ergo, if you cultivate a good reputation, then more opportunities open up, whereas if you're out to screw people over, it comes back to bite you.(Like any endeavour really) I'm only a small player in that I'm not out to do an Olympics show as I have other business interests that are my primary focus, however, I do like to dabble here and there. One thing I have been getting into is nightime aerial drone shows -that complement the fireworks. Like any emerging technology, I can see the public appetite becoming more receptive to these due to the growing advantages PROS * Little to no noise -good in suburbs where pet disturbance is an issue * Individually tailored visuals ie customised business, school logos etc * No fire danger * Lower ongoing cost and setup. While the initial CAPEX is steep, the OPEX is pretty good *Faster set up and pack up * No rubbish/environmental damage -which corporate clients like *If you have solar running your business premises, you can market it as a "zero emissions" show ie solar charged up the drones. CONS * Not as grand a spectacle (everyone loves a big explosion) * Not as bright as a standard fireworks show * No smell of burnt gunpowder * More permissions required ie FAA flight restrictions in some areas etc * More expensive to scale ie customer sees you do a 300 drone show, so they want a 500 drone show next time * Can be technically embarrassing when the odd drone goes off course or fails to take off. Anyway, a bit of food for thought....all the best

100% agree, as a former lighting operator (& warm-up DJ), it's amazing how many clubs (even larger superclubs) don't really put enough effort into a good light show, which kills the vibe, especially when the DJ is doing a great job and the lighting operator has all these lights at their disposal, but just leaves it on a shutter chase and plays on their phone, or goes for an extended smoke.

you wanna' see lights? watch the endymion & partystarter sets from this same qlimax. the sfx team pushes the equipment to it's limits, you aint never seen a lightshow like those sets.

you usually see it during strobes, there is a bit where the LD was a little off in the middle. but that is forgivable

The lights and sound were preprogrammed together. It's called timecode. The light board operator hits one button (GO) on the board and it runs all the visual effects and sound (lights, music, pyrotechnics, etc) that were programmed into the board (well before the event), synced together and saved as a show. It is merely being played back for the audience as the main intro.
