Nathan jones who outperformed QPR with a tenth of the budget at Luton? Prem fans don’t understand how well jones did at Luton in both stints, do some research.
@@mattashmore437 I’m on about the bizarre comments he makes in press conferences about all sorts of things, I’m not even a fan of an english club you bam
It’s such an indescribable trait managers fitting at certain clubs. As a Wigan fan, when we appointed Kolo Toure, there was just something missing from the off which you couldn’t put your finger on. Now with Shaun Maloney, he just gets it. Yes he played for us before which helps but there’s just something around him which makes you feel he’s a good un. Hope you get the right fit on the next appointment.
As a Scottish football fan Maloney impressed me at Hibs. Thought he was stubborn to a fairly expansive style of play but didn't have the players who were up to the task and got sacked pretty prematurely.
No way! THE Shaun Maloney? Didn’t know he was managing now, always liked him at Wigan for some reason, would always turn up whenever you guys needed another great escape
I always enjoy hearing you chat about QPR. It’s clearly something you’re really passionate about and that’s the best content someone can make imho. Great vid!
Agree with pretty much all of that. I saw no evidence of coaching from Critchley, the same players kept making the same mistakes. And, I’d love to have seen his interview and what Les saw in him? I agree about the swagger - I think of Venables, Howe and Francis (Trevor) who had that underlying gravitas and solidity about them. A manager needs to be a leader first and foremost and by failing to identify this Les and maybe Lee are doing nothing to convince me they have a Scooby about the fundamentals of their position. I really appreciate your high quality content and am alongside you on the Rangers rollercoaster 🖖.
I`m an Evertonian, I liked your balanced views on Everton. Not knowing QPR that well I was surprised by the similarities of the situations our clubs find themselves in. Who would you have, that you feel would take the job?
Obviously not as viable from a views perspective, but James video's about QPR are some of my favourite that he makes. Passionate but rational analysis, great stuff
Hello James, love the channel and the content! I’m a Luton Town supporter; don’t worry, I come in peace! I’m sorry to hear about Neil Critchley; when Nathan Jones left us before the World Cup, Critchley was actually my first choice to come to Kenilworth Road; I liked the way in which Blackpool supporters described how he was able to instil a sense of togetherness at their club, whilst also playing an attractive brand of football. However, we went with super Robbie Edwards instead, who has lightly tinkered with what Nathan left behind and has got us some good results so far, one of them against Critchley’s Queens Park Rangers side funnily enough. It’s an interesting situation that QPR find themselves in, because you’ve got a good squad with solid support too; most of the pieces are there, you just need a competent Championship manager to put them together, and… I think I know just the man. Now, I am aware that, after the disaster that was Nathan’s reign as Southampton manager, you would feel worried about the possibility of him becoming QPR’s new boss. So, I would like to take some time to explain why Nathan has the potential to be, not only a good appointment for QPR, but a great one. Whilst there are some reasons as to why Nathan failed to appreciate and understand Southampton, there are more reasons as to why Southampton failed to appreciate and understand him. And when I say “Southampton” I’m referring to both the board and the supporters. Nathan is often depicted, by the wider footballing community, as a coach who encourages a negative brand of football, and whilst there is some truth in this, it doesn’t comprehend the full context as to why. Nathan, wherever he has been or will be, will never want his team to be one dimensional and too direct. He aspires to have an athletic and organised side with a flexible and fluid system, but he cannot do this by snapping his fingers; he is a coach who requires a respectable amount of patience from both a club’s board and support. At Luton, it took Nathan two and a half seasons to completely construct the side that would see us promoted from League Two, and after some further signings in the following window, we would proceed to storm League One and return to the Championship, and we would do all of this as a fantastic footballing side. Of course, Nathan did depart Luton to become Stoke City’s manager which, similar to Southampton, was a complete disaster. Although, after Nathan had been dismissed by Stoke, he returned to Luton; a Luton that was fighting for its life in the Championship without the presence of supporters because of the pandemic, and because the squad was so similar to the one he left behind, they were all prepared and willing to trust him; we guaranteed our survival with the final game of that season. After this, we began to become a comfortable and competent Championship side under Nathan. The formation and footballing style altered slightly, but that was mostly so we could protect Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from the pressure of opposition midfielders. However, in the following seasons, we were unable to extend the contracts of some crucial players, players that Nathan needed for the sake of squad depth and their influence on the pitch; James Collins, Kal Naismith, Matty Pearson and most recently James Bree and Harry Cornick. And whilst our board backed Nathan as much as they could, we couldn’t financially compete with other Championship clubs. We couldn’t acquire players like Jacob Greaves or Jon Russell and we still can’t, so naturally, this frustrated Nathan; he wanted us to continue being the flexible and fluid side we had been under him, but we couldn’t anymore. So, this left Nathan in a situation where he had to play a much more negative style in order to accommodate the square pegs in round holes on the pitch, whilst also having to accumulate as many points as possible; he had attempted to do this before at Stoke and would proceed to do the same at Southampton. Now, this worked fine for us because Nathan built the foundations of the squad and everyone at the club was wise to this, we were aware that this wasn’t what he wanted, but he had no choice. For Southampton and Stoke though, he didn’t have that credit in the bank, which is why I think the wider footballing community associates Nathan with a negative style of football. Now, despite the rivalry between Luton and QPR, the clubs are remarkably similar in some respects; both are respectable Championship clubs with solid supporters, both have gritty and hostile home grounds, both currently have athletic and competent squads, both have academies that produce Premier League talent and supposedly, both have business models in place to reach the Premier League. However, there is one difference; despite your financial predicament, you still have a better chance of pinning your current crop of players down to decent contracts, as well as a transfer budget that is stronger than ours. This difference might be exactly what Nathan needs to catapult a club like QPR into the Premier League. Like I mentioned earlier though, Nathan cannot do this by snapping his fingers, so if he does become your next manager, I think he will initially resort to the more negative style of football that he is associated with at the moment, and that is something that you will temporarily, have to take. However, if your supporters can express some trust in Nathan for the rest of this season and the next, I am ninety percent sure that he will take you to the Premier League, no more than three seasons after this one; you might initially struggle to accept him too, not only as a manager, but as a man. Nathan is one of the most charismatic managers out there, and there will come times, when he is hyperbolic or maybe even hysterical in a press conference, but when you watch him, and see how hard he works to imbed himself into the culture of the club he serves, and how he convinces players to care about your club, trust me… You will learn to love him.
We really shouldn't have sacked Warburton. Am sorry for Critchley as he had good credentials though I suspect the contrast in management styles/personality between him and Beale has played a significant role in our recent poor form.
Love the content you put out, knowledge is spot on. Just wish you did more championship / EFL content. Not many RU-vidr's who know what below the PL is all about. Id trust you to give a good insight.
Clive Whittingham - what a man. I rlly need to just avoid twitter and stick to his articles, all the info you need is there. Love the QPR vids James please do more!
Can you do a video/rally on possibility of Craig Bellamy getting job? Young, passionate, 'in your face', youth coaching experience (Anderlecht), 1st team experience abroad and EFL, played under top managers like Rafa Benitez, Sir Bobby etc. Need to think outside the box.
SAFC fan here, love all the videos mate, was genuinely shocked at how poor QPR played last Wednesday night, never really rated Critchley, hopefully onwards and upwards now
How things have changed this season, remember you posting video at start all enthusiasm about Beale which was pretty much spot on Then the video when Beale did the dirty where you were bit gutted and rightly so Now a video about having to sack critchley which I agree with Hopefully by end of season there be a surprise video about how new manager turned it around in amazing fashion and we sneak into playoffs but that Just as easily be a video about how we somehow got relgated as well.
Thanks James for explaining that Rangers are still under a transfer ban this seems very harsh, but if the club deliberately flouted the rule the powers that be are certainly showing no mercy. What another 5 years before the Rrr's can buy talented players? The current squad imo are not good enough to challenge for a top six, despite the lofty heights earlier in the season. Yet I believe are certainly good enough to remain in the Championship with a coach/manager who can help them develop further. It seems also the club have not done a great job in developing younger players in the last 10 years apart from Chair. At least he is a player that has absolutely proved himself in this division and will be key in assisting to keep us in it. I would add apart from Warnock and Warburton, the other managers appointed have not been the right fit for QPR over the last 13 years. The board and DOF must take a fair portion of responsibility for this lack of savvy recruitment. Hopefully lessons are learned from the recruiters.
as ever Jimmy boy great content. As an R's fan I find it hard to be rational and your videos explain my inner workings best. Showed my girlfriend your warburton sacking video to explain my feelings! Keep it up and look forward to the next one
James, how would you feel about a punt on Steven Schumacher? Would be difficult due to his contract at Plymouth but he’s young and would be buzzing for the opportunity
I've been a QPR fan since the early 70's. I have to say that the last 5 to 10 yrs have been very disappointing. Some good results usually followed by a string of poor results against lowly positioned opposition. Sometimes we score freely while bleeding goals against us. We tighten the defense, but suddenly we can hardly score any goals. I don't know what the answer is though. Do we need better quality players? Better managers? Maybe a more settled squad overall?
As a QPR fan, this feels so typical. I don't even really have anything to say about the sacking - it was the right move and it's been coming for a few games. Whenever QPR are brought up, though, I feel obliged to reinforce the point that we really have been strung up by FFP and left to die. We don't have a path to normalisation until the fine is paid, which is still years away. Meanwhile, the nationstate that operates Man City can pay off their fines with the snap of their fingers, break whatever rules they like and ostensibly get away with it. A lot of fans (on social media at least) scream for the board, Les and Lee to go, but I would argue that they have done pretty well to even keep us afloat in the Championship as long as they have under the conditions they're under. FFP is a tool for big, rich clubs to keep small, poorer clubs in their place. Big clubs wanted to freeze the football hierarchy because they sit at its peak, and they have their wish. QPR can never be more than we are because a growing QPR would threaten the likes of Chelsea for the West London hegemony over time. They can do what they like, because they are already rich, and we are left to suffer and rot because we are already poor. I will never be okay with this. I will never accept this status quo. The fans of smaller clubs cannot simply concede ground on this. We are constantly being walked over and stepped on because we aren't pretty enough for the gambling companies and institutional money that bankrolls this sport.
We are never going to break this cycle until we change our DOF or scrap the whole thing completely, we need to buy low and sell high or bring through academy players. The facts are the results of these things haven’t been good enough. We continuously trust Ferdinand to get appointments and player recruitment right, it’s not working.
You are dead right James.Any new Manager will find this job very challenging and demanding. We have some brilll players who will thrive under the right Manager who commands respect right from the VERY onset.
Who appointed Critchley and why? Was the idea that he'd be Beale's natural successor because both worked with Gerrard? They couldn't be more different. Also, if you do appoint Critchley, surely you have to give him time because his pedigree suggests that he needs 9 months to a year? Also, what's the thinking behind the football side of the club? They have a category 2 academy, the whole thing is set up to get local lads to succeed but Cat 2 academies aren't something you can rely on. It seems like there is flawed thinking across the football club.
As a Nottingham Forest supporter, QPR has to continue the manager merry-go-round until something clicks - the new manager gets results and you are promoted. It took Forest 23 years to find Steve Cooper in 2021...good luck. The Championship is very very tough to get promotion from if you are not a "parachute club".
I sit in the Upper Loft and genuinely shocked and depressed we've only seen four goals down that end. I believe Gareth Ainsworth can get the place rocking again.
Don’t know if this will get lost in the mix. This is a QPR video about QPR but… As a Chelsea fan, the parallels seem striking From the London club/london catchment The lack of a managerial charisma match, jeez that hit home Mou, Conte, Lampard, Tommy T - Mr Potter. The win record, the amount of goals witnessed from the “home” stand, “do they really want it” you guys have no real striker! I dunno, looking at the Chelsea situation with your QPR match going hat on. It does have an effect on the spoilt, entitled image?
Sometimes its plain to see something isnt right, that the manager, regardless of previous credentials, just hasnt got the players on his side. We had the same with Gerrard at the Villa, clearly out of his depth. I hope you get the right man for the job. Be nice to know who you would want
I don’t think it is was just the Critchley that needs to go, I think Les Ferdinand, Lee Hoos and Chris Ramsey all need to leave too. They are the main issue at the club.
Some intresting suggestions. Jones and wilder the main ones. Also ainsworth or maybe Dean Smith. All good potential and this team isn't incapable of winning. But good luck to whoever comes in
As a norwich fan id say stay clear of him. His attitude was really bad he didn't stay after training and didn't do any analysis with the squad he spent most his time playing golf with Craig Shakespeare. We had 1 shot in 2 games once and he said that it was the fans fault for booing when we was playing terrible football for most the season and if we didn't sack him we certainly won't even be near the play offs with what should have been one of the best squads in the championship. He played Josh Sargent up top for a few games whilst pukki was injured and he scored 8 goals in 6 games and it was clear from then that he just wasn't a winger which is where he had been playing him for the last 6 months. Pukki comes back from injury and Sargent goes back on wing and we stop scoring goals, then the world cup starts and Dean Smith says that Sargent isn't a winger hes a number 9. Then when things restart after the world cup he plays him on the wing still even though we were losing games without scoring. It was pretty clear that he was wanting to be sacked so be could get the pay off which to me isn't a good sign
FFP aside, sounds very similar situation to Southampton. Worse still, I hear a rumour you’re linked with Nathan Jones. I hope for your sake that it is just a rumour.
As a Coventry fan and I know this is a trite oft repeated platitude, it does boil my blood abit to see yourselves with such an ongoing ffp ban, us with points deductions over the years for other issues (a suspended one over our heads now for failing to fulfil fixtures through no fault of our own) Derby etc while Man City will get literally zero punishment Ps just please don't steal Mark Robins ;)
I am so pleased Critchley has been booted out - He was pleasant enough, but was as thick as a tree and we can't waste time on a guy who thought every Tuesday was a Thursday - bye!
Please not Nathan Jones or Dean Smith. Either Ainsworth or Wilder. Feel sorry for Critchley. 14 first team squad available on Saturday. 9 first team/squad players out injured. IMO we cocked up in not keeping Warburton on. Think we will need 3 wins and a couple of draws from 13 games.
