I’ve been using the QSC K12. 2’s quite a bit. They’re really pretty great speakers. Much more flat in response than the original K12’s. And considerably louder. So far, the only thing out there that’s killing the K 12..2’s are the Yamaha DZR12’s. And the Yamaha’s are only a little bit better.

To be honest, I like a lot of Mackie models for sound quality, but I’ve always thought that they were visually distracting. I actually think the best looking and sounding portable PA speaker of all time, to my eyes and ears, was the original QSC K10, mostly because they are simplistic in design, but the components are slightly visible behind the grill, giving them a powerful look. And they also sounded better than the new ones to me. They seemed to put out a ton of bass for their size.
@alpoulin1
@alpoulin1 2 года назад
Improperly matched levels on the speakers will always make the louder one sound better (or inaccurately louder) to most people in such a demo, unfortunately. Since different speakers from different manufacturers have different sensitivity, some simply require more signal to produce the same SPL. This has nothing to do with their sound quality or maximum output however. That said, while QSC Ks are not my favorite sounding speaker, they are much more likely to be rocking in 5 years and still have proper customer support while the Mackies are more likely to be in a landfill somewhere. I'm happy to see Mackie does seem to be improving quality wise, their past history has not been stellar in terms of customer service.
@ParmerleeTube
@ParmerleeTube Год назад
The levels weren't eve close, and it appeared the microphone was much closer to the Mackie. As a result the QSC sounded puny and the Mackie sounded distorted on most of the samples. The decibel levels between the two speakers are virtually identical and I know the Mackie doesn't sound atrociously distorted when the gain staging is right. Given that both have decent limiters in the DSP, the distortion was probably coming from the recording (into the mic) rather than from any problem with the speaker.
@kenrichmond6906
@kenrichmond6906 Год назад
It's all subjective. You don't know that the Mackie's will not stand the test of time. I have had the same Mackie's for 25 years. They still perform and sound great.
@alpoulin1
@alpoulin1 Год назад
@@kenrichmond6906 Older Mackies were manufactured in collaboration with RCF, so had higher quality internals and transducers. Today's Mackies, especially the cheaper Thump stuff is designed to fit a price point, and it shows. That said, their upper line stuff is looking decent. Not sure how customer support is after the sale though...
@miltondowling

Both sound grate. Qsc's have recessed mids while Mackie's are the exact oposit with a bit foreword mids. This also helps giving the impression of a much louder sound from the Mackie.

I wanted the QSC but the SRMs were a total of $570 cheaper than the K12.2 per pair and the sound was not different enough to spend more on the K12.2. QSC = $1000 each and Mackie was $737 each. Accounting for tax it is a $570 difference per pair. Now that I have the SRM212 V-class I have no plans to buy the K12.2. Yes, the mids are hot, but in a crossover scenario with subs, hot mids on the tops is a good thing.

The levels weren't matched so there's no way to conclude which speaker sounds better. I do understand that both were set at 12 oclock but the pots can have a different slope to them so one might be pushing more watts at 12 than the other though the other might be louder at full volume.
@DJ-Coma
@DJ-Coma 2 года назад
Exactly this. I saw another comparison video of these two speakers that did the exact same thing. When comparing audio sources, our ears fool us into thinking the louder one sounds better. The two recordings should have their levels matched in post production for a more fair comparison.
@ParmerleeTube
@ParmerleeTube Год назад
@@DJ-Coma Post production wouldn't have helped in this case because the Mackie recording was distorted in most cases. Best to re-run the test properly with equal sound levels and possibly with a mic that has a 10 or 20 dB pad to avoid the distortion in the recording.

Hoping this srm v class I ordered will be crisp and clean. I have ordered the 15 and the 12 V Class. I might do a review when i receive them. There's only 2 hz between the 12 and 15 on bass response. This video was extremely helpful! I'm on the fence between upgrading my two Mackie SRM550's & two Mackie SRM650's to either all QSC K12.2's, or going directly to the SRM212's & SRM215's. I use a BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer between my main mixer & my speakers, and the difference definitely shows, but of course is a unique case on my end! I'll have to see if my local Guitar Center has some of the new QSC's & Mackie lines to test. Thanks again for the helpful info & video!!

@@Jedhenrymusic I ended up going the Mackie V-Class route! I'm a DJ so they're loud enough and have enough thump to get my events moving (and have some nice ambience for Weddings too!). I really like the DSP options that you can dial in digitally on the Mackies (which really change the tone and frequency of the speaker) such as "indoor"/"outdoor" etc. They are really solid speakers! (I'm still shopping around for subwoofers, I'll probably end up getting a big newer QSC 18" at some point, they've just always made great subs!). Thank You so much for the video! I'm in the market for a PA for my band doing good size live shows the SMR 212 i believe is my choice. I have demo the QSC and I will say from the comparison I definitely hear a difference I like the sonic ranges in the Mackie a bit more I'm sold...

To be honest I have been eying Mackie lately with their SRM and DRM series, would be incredible to get my hands on them. How does the clarity and headroom compare vs the QSC?
@TinkerForward
@TinkerForward 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! The SRMs are not quite as crisp of sound as the K12.2s, but its close. The SRMs have more of a full range of sound than the K12.2s in my opinion. They hold up when I was pushing the sound level hard.

To be fair, this video is misleading. Too many variables were not addressed and there was no control. If these had been zeroed out, with third party parameters, I believe your results would seriously differ.

QSC has much better quality sound , Not as loud but better sound for sure cleaner and tighter …

I did seem to hear what I felt was a "crisper" sound from the QSCs, IMO.

Hi Rich, at 24:30 in the video I show that the microphone is placed on a mic stand in between both speakers I'm testing and its pointing forward at BOTH speakers, not just one speaker in particular.

This comparison lacks the ONE factor that matters above all else for a working professional DJ: Reliability, backed with a warrantee. The QSC boasts an unheard of 6 year warrantee. Mackie's is nowhere to be found. The bottom line is both these products will sound great out the box at your gig. But when the Mackie fails a year in (their quality tanked when they moved production overseas) you'll look like a fool. My QSCs have never, ever, failed me. Not once. As long as they keep the build quality robust, and back it up with that warrantee, I'll keep coming back. The bluetooth does look nice tho

I wish RCF made a 2 input powered speaker. I need a really great floor monitor for my guitar and mic. Each need separate input and I'm currently using an ELX12. I feel like it's either a K12.2 or the RCF with the added cost of a mixer.

@@GKSounds1 Damn those TT's are big money and look like overkill for my needs. I got the HD32A as sort of a (hopefully) end game stage monitor for guitar and vocals. I tested it out yesterday and it's in a totally different league of quality of sound, clarity, volume output, etc vs my EV but at 4x the price, I expected it.

Considering how expensive the QSC are (£200 more than the Mackie per unit) they sound very drab & mundane compared to the Mackie that's for sure 🙄 just wondering if Mackie still employ the RCF main drivers in their SRM series like they did with the LEGENDARY!! 450's? 🤔🤔
